Ran across this old slide the other day. My 1959 Bug with the partially completed Dead Album painting at Vedauvoo (a cross-over photo to the Dead Head Thread). This car went everywhere, 36 hp engine, crash-box transmissions and no gas gauge (just a little lever you kicked over with your foot when the engine sputtered due to lack of gas).

Drove all over Baja with my parents in a green 77 Westie, southern Mexico in a Beetle, and everywhere from Smith south in my 81 Westie.
Then it was "Oh what a feeling! "...

lest you think this was not an automotive adventure trip, the main hose from the radiator to the water pump... same trip, jury rig:
which got changed in Lethbridge.. I still feel guilty for the pirate cooling system repair on some back street that released coolant into the local water table... sorry!

Driving the back roads to N. Conway last fall I thought I saw a familiar shape sticking out of a guy's garage; turned around just to check.
Sure enough, a VW Thing. Hadn't seen one since I was a kid.

Thanks for posting up all these great shots!
I have rebuilt a few bugs over the years, but I've lost all the pics that I had. Did a few Baja conversions, but most were Cali mods.
Awesome to see the Fish mobile, I've read a few references to it here and there and wondered what it looked like. Awesome that he still has it.
My girl and I are talking about doing a restoration project, she wants to do a Ghia but I'd love to do a split window bus....I remember seeing a pic of one in Hawaii that had hinged windows in some massive graveyard over there that I thought was pretty cool.

had this 1970 bus for 15 years, of coarse it was parked in camp 4 for a dozen years without moving. only went through one engine, drove her like i was an old lady.
(miss that proud rig.)

Yeah, I've cast covetous glances at the Delica, just chatted up a Canuck at Red Rocks who gave me a card for a dealer in Vancouver. I think there are import issues for the US though. Can't just be the drive side, around here all the rural mail carriers drive private cars with right hand drives, so maybe there's emission issues too. Canada does emit more CO2 per capita than the US.
The Delica is smaller, does it comfortably sleep folks 6' and taller?
Not surprised that Delica owners wave to each other, its been VW Van standard behavior, across the model changes, forever. Its rather charming to be able to count on complete strangers stopping at your roadside breakdown just because you share an obsession with a vehicle. It's less charming that sometimes those breakdowns are more frequent than seems reasonable though.

Great thread Ed! Thanks for all the postings up until now (esp. yours Bob D'.)
This is my dad (also Darwin) just off Saddlebag Lake road just past Tioga Pass in maybe '68. He took me and Matt Pollock up there for a weekend. He was a great dad and passed away in 2005. Before this bus, he had a 195? that had the semaphore turn signals. He gave me the van (I am not worthy) and it spent two Falls in the Valley and got broken into by a bear through the cracked back window by a bear. The bear shredded that cloth lining they put in the early 60s vans.

A pic of My Buddy Jeff's van on the way up to Slesse during a 2004 roadtrip to Canada. Adventuring around in this van inspired me to eventually take the plunge and get a westy of my own!
This winter, the two westy's finally met down in Cochise Stronghold!
