Edit - I assume you didnt mean the shot from crystal ridge, that one is in one guide that i know of and its ntb as well :)

psyrosis- do tell about Crystal Ridge; this is a different area altogether.
I heard about The Crystal Method in the early 80's. Dale Bard found it when he spent a year living upcanyon near there in his bread van; Hiskes oversummered out there as well, and that accounts for much bouldering development, as well as the various bolted leads.

Dale would not disclose the location of The Method; it took me about 18 years to find it. Turns out that I'd been running, and mtn biking past it, on the nearby road that was my morning workout.

Well, one fine Jan. day, I was ski touring out there, at just the right time of the afternoon, when all of the milky quartz was glowing in the solitice sun. There was no mistaking it! (And, as you know, all of those crystals are downslopers; may as well just be painted on there).

There is, indeed, a Crystal Hill not far from our home, where my young daughter would never fail to bring home amethyst and garnets, lots of quartz. Found a specimen arrowhead in our front yard, the start of quite a collection of spear points, along with some unusually tiny points which were evidently fashioned for quail and sage grouse.

Really, any time is a good time to be Buttermilking. But it breaks my heart to see dozens of cars out there weekends. BITD, it was Wednesdays, July and August. After work, at about 6 o'clock, the whole shebang would go under the shadow of Mt. Tom, and the temps would immediately drop to the low 70's. I was surprised if I encountered another soul out there, and, if I did, it was a pleasure.

Wind did not bother him as he was used to it, he said. He then said he was full of beans and he slid off into the wind again.
