Hey...remember when that evil judge was runnin' an illegal mining operation up in the Carson Range??..with prison labor? Man...that ruled. The Cartwrights got somehow caught up in it...well Lorne Greene and I think Little Joe anyhow. They had to escape without gettin' killed...which is what that judge would've done to 'em. I guess he'd already been killin' prisoners for a while for workin' slow, tryin' to escape, mouthin' off, etc. So then they get this plan together where Little Joe has to pretty much put his shackles over an ore cart rail....then when the ore cart rolls by all filled, it snaps his chain. I think he escapes alone but has to go get Hoss so they can come and rescue their pop. I can't remember if the evil judge dies or not, but I'm sure he got his in the end. What the hell was Purnell Roberts doin' the whole time??...I don't know. Maybe he was laborin' in the prison too....or maybe he was gone...or hell, maybe hangin' with Gonzo out in front of the Titanic in the parking lot. I'd sure hate to get stuck doin' hard prison labor in a 19th century gold mine, let me tell you.

Guys... Hoss was WAY to big to get on that horse. What were they thinking trying to pull the wool over our eyes with that one?!?!?

As I welcome myself to this forum, I see a thread about Bonanza. What better way to make my first post than to say that Bonanza was the last great TV show. The episode that started this thread is on VHS in my library right now.

So I was going to tell this joke about Hoss to a group of climbing friends. When this one youngster about 12 years old starts whispering to his dad. I stop in mid sentence and say, "you don't know who Hoss Cartwright was, do you son. Or what bonanza really means." I said, "let me tell you something, Bonanza is the greatest television show that was ever on television. On Sunday night every family in America sat down and to start things off we saw a Chevy truck drive through a river. And then the screen was filled with a huge map of the Ponderosa. "Let me ask you something son, when you were driving down the highway, did you ever ask you dad, "why do they call that big house over there the Ponderosa?" Any way, this huge map starts burning from the center outward and in the background you see four men riding horses toward you. The old jewish guy on the right with gray hair is the daddy. And the son next to him looks like he's from the middle east and then the next son is really big and rides a small horse that looks like its really tired. That man, son, was Hoss.

Good ole' prison labor. I think that sheriff down Feeniks way had the right idea...mockin' them bastards while workin' 'em hard. Maybe not killin' 'em...ok maybe some of 'em. Good ole' towne pillory...wish we had a few more o' them...maybe an iron pig mask or two.

Bonanza was a great show as was Gunsmoke. Too bad Hop Sing wasn't in more episodes. My personal favorite was the one where Hoss hooked up with that old miner dude that had the psychic dog.

What about High Chapparal? John Cannon, Blue Boy, Buck, Manolito? 'member when Blue got stung by a scorpion and nearly died? What a laugh. My wife got nailed twice in bed one night... by a scorpion, that is... for those of you with dirty minds. You don't die, you just get really pissed off and stomp the little f*ckers into microscopic pieces.

steel - was it the same scorpion or were there two?

If I'm not mistaken there's one scorpion in the west that's really bad. otherwise, yeah, I hear you just get pissed you got stung.

Ya'll are making me feel either young or braindead - probably the latter. I recall watching the show a lot - I don't recall hardly any of these details.

carry on...

I am not sufficiently familiar with the series to know when Bonanza jumped the shark. But I'm thinking maybe we should have a jumping the shark thread. Thoughts?

lee van cleef. a low budget western shot in Spain starts a long fine career that enraptured the European continent for three decades. Sad that most of us only know him as "the bad".
