It is real. Think of it like a screamer. After its loaded it gets hard but then goes back to its soft state. It will hold but then you better get off of it quick before it oozes out of the crack.

You have to pass an electric current through that stuff to keep it stiff, otherwise once the shock load is absorbed they turn back into goo and drop you. Now if they developed some sort of pizzaelectric cell to do that...with a nice red sauce.
