I just received my new CU Belay Glasses a few days ago and got a chance to try them out today at the Gorge. As promised, here's my unbiased semi-professional opinion with a shot of them in action.

They are great I must say. Super clear image. Exquisite workmanship. Lightweight. And the "looking noble carrying case" is well, pretty darn cool too.

Everybody who tried them on thought they was the shiznit as well.

I didn't even have to bend my neck to freak out during the leader's sketchfest....

You should have had that rope around your waist as a hip belay to freak em out, just like ole TM, used to do.

A hip belay like TM...like all of us back in the day!

Good idea though. I'm getting tired of "holding people" while they "practice the moves". Maybe the hip belay will change their minds about practicing too much.

Damn, you're still a genius WB!

Lookin' something like a cross between a Rutger Hauer and Christopher Lloyd character, John! I suspect that's a good thing. :-)

Those puppies are 97.50 Euros... that's about $150.... they'd better be crystal clear at that price.

I'd need to modify them with a flap of black tape for when Woody is leading.

Do they have the warning "objects may appear closer than
they look" on the glasses? (Sort of like the warning
on your passenger-side mirror on the auto. . .

Does the sketching leader look, in effect, upside down?

Oh, I see- w/ double reflection it corrects.

OK, what about that statement on the car mirror?

"Objects are closer than they appear" --- Do you find that to be true?

I don't. If I look in the mirror to see if there's room to change lane right, and see a car, it might look like there's not enough room, but when I turn my head and look, there is actually more room- the car is further away than I thought.

So the true statement would be 'Objects in mirror are further than they appear'.

Agree/ disagree?

Nothing is upside down. Rotating your head makes the rock "tilt" like a rocking boat or something. If you look straight on and face directly towards the rock, then everything looks "normal" - just like you were looking straight up at the climber.

Climbers are pretty much the same size as in normal vision but the whole scene is slightly "cropped" - and amazingly you can see quite a bit around the climber.

The image is completely crystal clear, I mean it's clean.

They did a pretty damn good design job on these babies I have to say. They even put my name on them - JOHN in orange letters.

Can you give me an idea on how to order them? It states cash in advance, but I can't decipher if this is a mailing address or bank that I am supposed to deposit the money too.

I've been wanting something exactly like this for a while now. Brilliant design, very nice and clean.

Bachar, how did you get a pair of these (engraved, no less!!). Would love to bust these out at the crag to stares of envy all round...

Climbing at the International Indoor Gym here in Antwerp Friday when I saw a guy actually using these (the walls are high.) I really wanted to take his pic, but for once I was intimidated......he had a growl on his face and was covered with tatoos....at first I thought they were lycra he was wearing.

Anyway, I thought of John and his Thread and couldn't get him out of my mind. Thinking of JB's family and friends and their first Holiday's without him, which led to Ouch.......So my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Been there. May Peace reign in your hearts. Lynne
