lateralus is tools best in my
not so humble opinion.
10,000 days follows in the wake
of that album.
their early stuff had more
angst and their later stuff
is more along the lines of
exploring the human psyche.
get ahold of the lyrics for the
songs like schism, parabola,
and lateralus and you'll know what
i'm talking about.
what i really dig is the the bands
collaboration with visual artists
like alex grey, chet zar, and
cam deleon.
i'll post some links to those cats
when i have more time.
puscifer is good too!
a side of maynard you may have not
seen;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BY5in8JY0ao
as for maynard being a dick,
well it still is rock n' roll,
it's an image.
i think maynard is divine.

Tool is one of those bands that happens to be a formation of artists of whom each is incredibly talented. Other examples include: Led Zeppelin, Rush, and (IMO) Yes. Notice that all three bands have badass drummers and singers. I would name Pink Floyd here, but their drummer sucked.

I dunno.. I saw the tool concert last year (I think) and it sucked. The visuals were so-so and Maynard hid in the back corner of the stage the entire time. Not to mention the audio quality REALLY sucked. I was pretty bummed. Great music, but not much of a show.

I believe Alex Grey's art was inspired by his study of the human nervous system, but I could be wrong. Tool comissioned him to do the art. If I get a chance I'll post a picture of my awesome AG longsleeve shirt. People mock it but they just don't know!

Sorry if I said it wrong. But Alex Grey and Tool have had a collaboritive relationship for awhile. Perhaps art inspires music and vice versa. But anyways...

I’ve got a Maynard story…
Back in the late 80’s, maybe it was even early 90’s, I can’t remember. We were all heading from St. George down to Vegas to see a Tool concert. They were one of our favorites back in the day and had seen them a few other times (and a few times since). We were a motley crew of about ten, all crammed in a beat-up, hippie looking VW bus. It was only a matter of time before “something” happened. We were fired up as we bopped down the road to a fun-filled night of some live raging hardcore music.
We arrived in the parking lot and proceeded to get “primed” before we went in. Some of us, more than others. Now, we were/are a tight knit group, most of us knew each other before we were teenagers, we looked out for one another. We had/have each other’s back!
It started getting a little messy in the parking lot so we decided we better get in there and shake the buzz off. We were a little early, not too big of a line to wait in. Got the back of our hand stamped and was soon watching the warm up bands. The first band was ok, can’t even remember their name, haa haa. The second band came on and things started getting wild.
The entire place suddenly jumped to life and everyone was dancing… and back then dancing meant putting your elbows in people’s faces if they looked like they’re going to get nasty with you. You know, SLAMdance’n.
Well, there is such a thing as being too good at slamdance’n. I was on the balcony watching one of my good bro’s totally mow through the entire crowd, leaving a path of horizontal’s in his wake. My bird’s eye view noticed security forming some kind of retribution against my buddy. Lighting fast, I ran down to warn him.
“BRO, calm the Fu*k down”, I yelled at the top of my lungs when I reached him. He immediately headlocked me and pulled me into the crowd. I had no choice but either get dragged or do some fast stepp’n. We both ended up double headlocking each other as I tried to calm him down. It was futile!
The next thing I know about six or seven BIG security guards were on top of us. The music stopped completely. The band was yelling insults to the “ESTABLISHMENT” and the “MAN” and how they should just let us do our “THING”. But, they didn’t waste a second cueing up for the next song as we were “escorted” (dragged) out the exit, to the back alley door.
Oh, what happened next is what you see in the movies. They really “showed” us… by beating the hell out of us. My friend got the brunt of that one. I tried to reason with them, they were still thumping on me but not like they were my bro.
So, we’re in the alleyway, getting the crap knocked out of us by these bouncer security thugss and suddenly a bright light shined on us. It was the fuzz. “YES”, I thought, we’re saved. The officer’s jumped out and reprimanded the guys, ‘cause they saw what they were doing to us… and then let them go back into the show, to continue their jobs.
Well, the LVPD did the usual routine by running our names, asked us a bunch of questions but didn’t really comment on the security being a little extra forceful. I was angry that they were allowed to beat us like that in the alley and they (LVPD) weren’t going to do anything about it. Whatever, we probably deserved it. RIGHT? Haa haa.
Back in the parking lot I got an idea as I looked at the stamp on the back of my hand, I realized there IS a way back in. I grabbed my bag, stripped down, changed cloths, tied my hippie hair up… and then took a razor and shaved my face, dry, with no water. Ouch! Took my hat off, tied on a bandanna and headed to the show with an unlit cig in my lips.
Oh, let’s go down memory lane I thought as I made the approach to the entry of the show. Let’s go see where we got the shite beat out of us. We rounded the corner and there was a group, hanging out. They weren’t the security guys who pummeled us, so we continued, besides, I didn’t have a lighter and wanted to smoke my cig.
Ahh, a friendly bunch! They told us they had heard that a couple of unruly guys got chucked out. “Oh, that was us, haa haa. Yeah man, but they can’t keep US down” We told them the whole story of how we tried to disguise our appearance and were going to try and get back in.
They laughed. Thought we were HARDCORE! Or, maybe they were just laughing at us behind our backs. Who knows? Then I saw the skull tats on one of the guys back. HOLY SH#T! Maynard? Cool man! WHAT’S UP? Ok, maybe we were a little star-struck, but it caught us off guard.
Shortly after, someone comes out of the alleyway door and gives them a five minute call. They say goodbyes to us and rush off to “mezmorize” the crowd.
Our costumes worked without a hitch, getting in the door and even got a couple of nods from Maynard, while he was spilling it, at the edge of the stage... as we SLAMdance’d away.
WHOOO HOOO, what a night!
Oh, I should tell you the time Scotty Burk and I went to see TOOL…. OH MY!!!!

Yeah WL! I had kinda filed Tool away for awhile after high school then thought of it after I saw the Prog thread the other day. Low and behold I stumbled across some CDs while cleaning up and Opiate, Undertow, Ćnima were all right there. Can't even remember the last time I put CDs on but I've been devouring these all over again. So psyched! Ćnima is probably top ten favourite albums. Never got into much after that but it still sounds really awesome, those tracks you posted are great.

Puscifer is awesome too. Saw them in December, it was a unique show. The opening act was wrestling and every four or five songs, the band would sit in some bleachers and watch some more wrestling. Love their new album Money Shot.
Tool and Primus would have been awesome to see together. Seen Primus twice and Tool 8 times, both bands are top shelf. The first time I saw Tool, I was in 8th grade and the venue was turning into a church the next day. This was during their Undertow Tour and Maynard had some funny comments about church taking over.
For me Undertow, Aenima, and Lateralus are all three my favorites. Been some crazy places listening to each album and learned a lot about myself from listening under enhanced circumstances.
Edit: Yeah Vitaliy, I never really liked APC and probably one of the worst live shows I've seen.
