The music is pretty good. Awesome back in the day, so-so as of late. Tool's concert sucked ass last year too.
Maynard's best accomplishment to date....

Maynard seems to fit that 'Jerry Garcia' formula. IE; to deadheads (which I am), Jerry is a genius. To rock fans, the music which Maynard writes is genius. The off beat syncopation and the cryptic lyrics are all in line with the deadhead interpretation of the dead. In a strange way, I put Jerry and Maynard in the same category due to the genre bending nature of their music. Weird huh? Feel free to shoot me down, agree, or just not have any idea what I'm talking about.
Cheers,
Brandon-

Word for RATM too. Zack's radical leftist lyrics are something else! If anyone likes socially conscious electronic music(?) check the new bassnectar mix on his myspace page. He plays a remix of Rage's 'killing in the name of' and then calls for the arrest of Dick Cheney under the premise of war crimes. Inciteful? Yes. Powerful? Yes. Way left? Yes. Too far left for me, but still really good and worth listening to if you dig those beats.

Ricardo, I agree with what you said about Zack but,
By all accounts Maynard is an egotistical as#@&%e.
Would Jerry Garcia do this?
Its just 20 seconds in...

No, Jerry would never act like that and I was shocked that Maynard would do that too. Obviously the guy has more ego than is good for him.
Nevertheless, I do like the music. One thing that pops to mind is how Jerry and the Dead used the Hells Angels for many years as security at their shows. I belive it was at Altamont that things got out of hand?
My point is I guess, that egomania is inexcuseable, but being complicit in beatings and (I think) a death, is too. I am in no way justifying Maynards actions onstage, just trying to stir up trouble/conversation.

I love Tool's older stuff, and think Aenima is one of the greatest albums ever. Their newer work doesn't do it for me so much.
A Perfect Circle never clicked for me, but I really like Puscifer, which is evidently Maynard's latest project.

I beleive Tool has probably done more for "metal" than any band of the last 10-15 years. There is a creative genius behind the songwriting. While not for everyone, I think they have pushed the envelope of emotional music, while making the listener confront some uncomfortable inner issues at times. If a band can do that, then perhaps thats their means to end. But... no, not Jerry Garcia. Which is fine with me.

I would also like to add that I am a huge tool fan, and i think maynard is a dick. He's not much of a genius, he doesnt write the music for either bands, just the lyrics for tool and some lyrics for apc. I dont understand why people assume that the singer is the one who makes everything happen in the band. I'm pretty sure tool wrote a lot of their music without maynard anywhere around, but they would send it to him and then he would write the lyrics. It's all danny carey and adam jones.

But some of the lyrics on Lateralus were not only introspective, but at times beautiful. His public image may be shitty... but he stirs interest. And its not always negative. Look what he has done for Tibetan musicians for example.\

Maynard is a genius. His lyrics are mind blowing. I saw the Lateralus tour and my mind was completely blown away by the visuals. He doesn't need to write the music.
Nice video. Thanks for the post.
