OK - it's on.

To start I ask one favor. Is it possible to keep this thread on the first page? I realize this is a political site and all but maybe we can keep this scattered in with the rest of the political stuff.

Ya'll mostly know the drill.

Date: April 18, 19 , 20 4:20 (AKA IV:XX)

$30/night for two nights of all you can eat sushi (includes cranberry hazelnut french toast in the morning, and coffee/tea, etc.).

$5 facilitation fee

paypal@lafarge.net

Fly into Albuquerque.

Location: Diablo canyon. 150+ 1-3 pitch mostly sport routes on blocky basalt. Easy and Way Sofa King Hard routes. BLM land. You can blow sh#t up (but please keep it away from camp, RON! - I like it when my dog doesn't leave)

You don't eat fish? Uh... do you drink beer and climb and can you add 12 more minutes to the campfire each night? OK., good. We can work with your poor lost-fish-soul.

Sadly, I may not be able to make it. Though I do have friends in San Antonio NM, who it would be nice to visit - although they are now Mormons.

I guess next year, it can be SushiFest San Francisco XX:IV, to keep up the SFSF thing.

Well they say that Santa Fe is less than 90 miles away. And I got time to roll a number and rent a car...

"Albuquerque"

Well, they say
that Santa Fe
Is less than ninety miles away,
And I got time to roll a number
and rent a car.
Oh, Albuquerque.

I've been flyin'
down the road,
And I've been starvin' to be alone,
And independent from the scene
that I've known.
Albuquerque.

So I'll stop when I can,
Find some fried eggs
and country ham.
I'll find somewhere where
they don't care who I am.
Oh, Albuquerque,
Albuquerque.

I did not notice anyone posting info on the climbing in Diablo Canyon. I have not been but it some friends from CO had good things to say about it.

http://www.losalamos.com/diablo/

So, is the SushiFest more of an ST incrowd kind of thing, or are pudgy bumblies like myself welcome?

I don't think I have met any of the crowd (except maybe in passing at a trade show).

Anyway, I hope everyone enjoys checking out New Mexico. It is kinda like Colorado without all those damn people from Colorado (spoken as a former Boulder resident).

Once you attend.... YOU'RE IN!

It's open to anyone and everyone. We particularly prefer the types that like sushi. But even the ones that don't do fish are welcome. Bring the Los Alamos crowd! There will be a ton of new and fresh faces at this one.

The long awaited photos:

PapaJoto and I went out to Diablo Canyon last sunday. Here's a little Trip report.

We warmed up on Naked Lunch - a 140' 5.10

While Papahoto did his lead I listened to tunes

Long route

One person leads and fixes their cord. They wrap and the other person leads on another cord and then raps with both cords

Ms. Summit wondering what the fuss is all about

Home of SFSF IV:XX. It's about 15 miles away from our place. The dirt road is very drivable in most vehicles. Tons of camping. Shot taken from base of naked lunch

Then we wandered over the the cave.

PapaJoto put the rope up on a 12a for me to TR (which I sent twice)

Before he dogged his way up a 12d (which he'll send next time)

There's about 150 routes in the area. The range from moderate to hard. Two and three pitches, etc. etc. good fun climbing and will suffice for a weekend of sushi and climbing.

Hope you all have a good time and sorry I will miss this one. Will be in Panama with my wife....looking for some land and birding.

I went to college in Santa Fe and this is one of the first areas that I climbed at back in the early 70's...the name was Buckman Mesa and we did a number of crack lines in the canyon...it lay doormat still I think the early 90's when some new blood hit the area. Cool spot...hope you all have time and enjoy the culture and beauty that is northern NM...a really special place.

If you looking to do some hiking I heard there is a great hiking guide to the area by this guy named D'Antonio...check it out.

Lots of route beta for this area on mountainproject.com. Like said above, a wide variety of trad and sport ranging from vertical to very steep with a good handfull of stellar splitters(some crappy cracks too) and some airy multi pitch. Lots of easier grades (10's) can be found at the Coxcomb crag a little ways down the wash. The two giudes for the area are the Falcon NM and the Jemez guide. Neither are totally up to date but have the general gist. Most updates are on mountianproject.com.

by the way, after you are through with the weekend, go home because we are not used to having crowds and like it that way. Thank you

Bump for advertising. Come one come all to the 4th semi-monthy sushi fishtaval. This month's entertainment will feature a no holds barred harmonica challenge BLOW TILL YOU DROP. Would be much more interesting if Nature can bring a bunch of Hauties that he's been working in Santa Fe. Bear with me Tina.

Anyways, I challenge one and all including even Riotch to a harmonica duel. And you thought the bongo was loud. Come on folks, pony up and joins us. We aren't creative enough to keep ourselves fully entertained for the weekend. What goes on at Sushifest stays at Sushifest ( and of cousre the tacostand ). PE

If I do, so be it. But...since we are communing on Cheapbastard.com, I figured I better ask!

I might ask a few good natured hill billies for a donation of game meat for the fest. Buffalo, elk, deer and antelope. Got some elk heart steaks that are going to be real good. Don't mean to scare anyone off, but this food seems to fit in the local/pure foods theme of the sushi feasts. I know Nature has welcomed a diversion to ravenous sushi eaters so he can get a short breath, so don't be shy to bring along your game meat. Roll call for game meat.

My wife and I went out for some awesome sushi last night. We got a spider roll and ended up comparing it to Nature's spider rolls. Although they were a bit different, I think I rate them about the same. But eating great sushi at a big party at a climbing area definitely beats just eating it at a restaurant.

SushiFests are not to be missed. If you are on the fence about coming, just make up your mind and come on out for some great times. Because someday, maybe in 20 years or so, they might fade away into just legend.

Well folks... the law of diminishing returns continues.

Mother Nature, Sooze, P. Envy, Mark Miller and Piton Ron dropped out of the last sushifest (The cold tundra of Indian Creek) leaving the field of "been there, done that" down to IIRC 4.

We have another one dropping out of the field for SFSF. Radical can't do it. Let's all allow a tear to drop for Riley. His life has been rough but I know full well he's turning it around and doing well. We will miss you bro and you know that!

mmmmm toro. The other night at the sushi bar I asked what was good today. They told me the toro was the pick of the day, so I ordered some toro sashimi. I watched with great anticipation as the chef sliced off five pieces of some great looking fish. It tasted great. Then I almost had a heart attack when I saw the bill. The fish arrives soon!

Getting There
1) Get on the Santa Fe Bypass route (Veterans Memorial Hiway 599) either from I-25 south of Santa Fe or off of Saint Frances Drive NW of Santa Fe.

2) Exit onto Camino La Tierra heading west toward the Rio Grande, setting your odometer to 0 at the turnoff. After 3.8 miles the pavement ends and the road continues on a reasonably well maintained dirt road. At 7.7 miles you’ll pass a large green colored frame (aparently used to be a windmill painted like a daisey) on your left as you follow the main Diablo wash toward the river. At 12.2 miles you should reach the first turn off into the Diablo parking area. The canyon is clearly visible beyond. 2WD vehicals make it there all the time. They get stuck in the sand or mud on their way out at a somewhat less frequency.

was on the trail a half mile away from the climb.
He posted it and no one ever claimed it. . .
