a couple more random:

and an odd:

I didn't take the last one...somebody emailed it to me (forget who). It is a shot of my daughter (then 7) racing a "three-legged" climber at Vedauwoo. When the picture was taken, she had already climbed the route once and was getting ready to lap them.

Chiloe, that is beautiful and bizarre. Landscape = beautiful. Prison-like buildings = bizarre. What exactly are we looking at here??

The beautiful old town of Dubrovnik, Croatia, looking out at the Adriatic Sea. Below is a longer
view in the same direction. See the pinkish wall, zig-zagging through the middle of this second
photo? You can walk around the whole town along the crest of that wall, which was my vantage point
for both pictures.

Chiloe,

I just arranged a trip for my boss and family for 3 days in Dubrovnic this summer, plus three weeks in various other areas throughout Croatia. What an amazing place! (Your photo is much more stunning than any that the Internet sites posted.) Any recommendations on unusual things to see or do?

I wish we'd had a 3-week vacation there, but unfortunately I was in work mode and
just an accidental tourist. Dubrovnik certainly is charming, and deserves its World Heritage
Site status.

In 1991, after Croatia declared independence, Serbian and Montenegrin forces laid seige to the
city, firing artillery from the mountains in this picture. The mix of old (multicolored) and new
(solid orange) roof-tiles you see here reflects that destruction, and also Dubrovnik's
energetic rebuilding since the war.

You can see another segment of the city wall in this photo. If I just had a few hours in Dubrovnik,
I'd hike that again.

Here's one more slide from that trip, the village of Mali Ston. Climbing the mountain to its
right, you can see one segment of what is said to be the second-longest wall in Europe (second only
to Hadrian's Wall in Scotland).

That's a beautiful photo--Steven (my boss) is all psyched about walking the wall now.

Thanks for the info.

Chiloe,
those photos of the town are amazing! looks like something out of a story book! Makes me envious of L's upcoming trip...much more interesting than anywhere I'm headed in the next couple months.

(The Ston/Mali Ston wall is a whole different wall, of course. But it's worth a look too, if you're
out that way.)

Blackstone Glacier, Prince William Sound AK. A quick snapshot I took when we detoured on the way back to Whittier. The picture doesn't do justice, an awe inspiring location on a a rare clear day.

Seems we have two similar threads going at the same time which just reinforces the idea that these ARE great threads.
Thanks for the photos folks, they're fun to look at and as they load onto my screen it feels like I'm unwrapping a present, one at a time:>)

Hope these add a bit to the show.
