Just listened to James Taylor, Fire and Rain.

For all of my life since my last year of high school, that song is inextricably linked with the memory of my friend Barth Reynolds. I only knew him for a few years, came very close to a fist fight with him between classes one time. We went through a phase of being pretty close and hanging out, but then drifted apart as often happens among kids in high school. He was dealt a rough lot in life, ended up living with his uncle who was one of the bigger local drug dealers. His life was turning for the better when he moved onto the ranch owned by his girlfriend's father. He was getting his sh!t together. Then for whatever reason, he and his girlfriend broke up. He had nowhere else to go and he kept living on the ranch, having to keep seeing her and interact with her father. Within a month or two, one of my other friends found him sitting in the driver seat of a pickup truck after sticking a gun in his mouth and blowing out his brains.

It hit me in a powerful way, even though by that time I was pretty distant from him. I often wonder how heavy must have been that baggage for the nice girl that he was going out with and who broke up with him. Or my friend that found him. There was a memorial at the school for him, and I remember breaking down and crying, being consoled by one of the teachers. They played that song Fire and Rain, and I swear that I have never heard that song without being snapped into a reverie thinking about Barth, about the crummy hand he was dealt, about his decision to end his life, and what more of life's experiences he missed out on because of that.

It seems that I have lived multiple lifetimes since my last year in high school, and I'm only 43 now. At a young age we can't conceive of how much more is ahead of us, how much more is possible, and at the same time, how quickly it goes.

If life seems like sh!t to you, take heart that this world and your life can be so much more than what it seems. Just sharing this in hopes that it helps me move out of the reverie quicker so I can get some work done.

Nut agian,
As the years have passed I think back on a different but tragic set of circumstance that led to a drunken departure from a gathering of close friends. Of one of us, he was my close friend.
We were all very close friends then,
We were so young, the world just our own to grasp.
The poor kid, his sweet-hart in another's grasp, that night, he took it hard and left.
his car a VW bug, it was grisly scene by all accounts. The details, now barley matter.

We, the group, heard the crash & then, some time later sirens.
When we found out it wrecked a few of our lives.
The girl, never got over it. She switched schools, still it didn't help,
She tried to hide in drink & drugs.

Last year, and now a mother, she introduced me to her son,
named in honor of that 1st love.

To the memory,
I still think of what might have been.

The boy was one of the Donahue clan, the racing family , his uncle Mark was famous.
After the crash his younger brother, Brian, became my shadow,
I helped get him into individual sports.
But that kid, Brian, was not his brother, not as sweet or small.
Brian and I,
this ' kid brother', I felt for all the world, I should be there for.

we fought, , in practice and once in a hallway .
I understood, the reasons for the bitter nature of our rivalry.
I took some lickings. Letting Brian have his way.
In the hallway it was kind of sad the teachers broke us up and made us sit together for the
discipline.

We wrestled 1st &3rd he the heavier, did very well. He was a leg specialist, and an eventual state champ, at 112 lbs a class dominated by a family named Suruto
( wow, that just popped the memory synapses )

To this day, I do feel that I schoulda' . . .?
if I'd seen it - if I'd known the depth of that 1st love?
I should have taken his keys ~ or something?
and to this day I Choke Up, tear up as I am now.

Gerry Donahue,

it was a sad thing , period.
none of us ever got over it - really. -
The 1st death any of us had experienced

( followed very shortly by the death of Tobin S,)
Two events that, then, sent my in search . . . of what I've found.

I think, if we're human, these things stay with us.
We never forget those innocents that lived fast and died , to young.

And my NY state pal ! Yes the years have spun by were we ever really so younge and happy?
to fast
To fast,

Byrne baby...Byrne

Do you remember anyone here?
No you don't remember anything at all
I'm sleeping, I'm flat on my back
Never woke up, had no regrets

There's a party in my mind...And it never stops
There's a party up there all the time...They'll
party till they drop
Other people can go home...Other people they can split
I'll be here all the time...I can never quit

Take a walk through the land of shadows
Take a walk through the peaceful meadows
Try not to look so disappointed
It isn't what you hoped for, is it?
There's a party in my mind...And I hope it never stops
I'm stuck here in this seat...I might not stand up

Other people can go home...Everyone else will split
I'll be here all the time...I can never quit

Everything is very quiet
Everyone has gone to sleep
I'm wide awake on memories
There memories can't wait.
