Might as well make it a Band kind of day.

The Jerico album (1993) was dedicated to Richard Manuel and Stan Szelest, both too soon gone.

Country Boy was the last recording Richard Manuel made (Oct 1985).

≈ Too Soon Gone (J.Shear, S.Szelest)

Who was Szelest?

Stan Szelest was the piano player for Ronnie Hawkins' backing band, The Hawks. The Hawks came and went. Hawkins had a knack for finding talent. Hawkins found Levon, Robbie, Rick and then Richard. When Hawkins hired Danko, he transformed him from a fiddler and guitarist into a bass player (another knack of Hawkins' was moving people from one instrument to another).

Rick Danko learned his bass style from studying Szelest's left hand play on the ivory keys. Stan left the group, and Richard Manuel filled the gap.

The Hawks left Hawkins' and via Bob Dylan became The Band. With the Robertson-less Band reformed, Richard Manuel died in 1986. To keep the circle unbroken, Stan Szelest returned or (re)joined the group, dying in 1991.

Too Soon Gone:

Jules Shear, who is one of many guest musicians on the lp, took some unfinished music of his and Szelest's, that originated, as a tribute to Manuel, was completed by the aid of Levon and Rick. When finished Too Soon Gone had become a tribute to both Stan Szelest and Richard Manuel.

If interested, read Wheels of Fire and The Great Divide.

Might as well add Jules recording of the tune.

With the sun set and darkness on me, i'm still committed to The Band. Here's two more related posts.

Rick Danko left us in December 1999. In 2004 The Drive-by Truckers did a tribute to the lost members.

Nice work Tobia. A little thanks.

Sneak through the night up on your toes,
To look in your eye, it never shows
Your name up on the post office wall,
Puts you on edge 'cause they wrote it too small!

Long enough I've been up on Skid Row
And it's plain to see, I've nothin' to show
I'm glad to pay those union dues,
Just don't judge me by my shoes

On the banks of the river

what it be like bro hooblie?

if your interrogative is directed to me, it's a great lp of Dylan's created as a soundtrack for the film Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. it's worth watching just to see Dylan act as a character named Alias (i always wondered who came up with that name, had to be Bob.) home of the song, Knockin' On Heaven's Door.

come on over and we'll watch it.

Muddy Waters ≈ "Unk" In Funk"
the big man's last recording for the Chess label. these two tunes were penned by his granddaughter, Amelia Cooper. the players were Pinetop Perkins (piano), Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson (guitar), Bob Margolin (guitar), Calvin "Fuzz" Jones (bass), and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith (drums). he packed these guys for the rest of his career. Carey Bell is on the mouth harp.

Very likely that 'Alias' came from Rudi Wurlitzer who did the screenplay.

Sam and Bob did not get along.

Sam and Bob probably didn't get along; but Billy and Alias did. Bob and Rita probably got along as well.

As far as I ever heard, Sam and Dave did get along. Hold on a minute, is that a white boy on trumpet? The land of two thousand dances.

This show was a lot better before some fool put the stickies in it.

This is good. Vid quality is a little off, but it even includes the best American Rock band that Mexico ever produced.
