and climb a bit.

“Back in 1974 not long after I’m taken on as a junior reporter on MM, it’s deemed time to liven up the singles page and I’m handed the gig, someone at the top end of the staff block making the not unfair point that since I have an increasingly noisy opinion about everything I should put my mouthy bluster to some practical use.

Everything seems to be going reasonably swimmingly in my new role until I review the new Wizzard single, about which I’m unkind enough to Roy Wood’s manager to call me up in wrathful mood. I don’t catch his name because this tough talking windbag’s threatening to have every bone in my body broken, my throat cut and my body burned and dumped in an alley somewhere, all which sems an implausible overreaction to a bad review. Who is this bullying wanker?

From his heavy breathing, he sounds like he’s on his way to cerebral explosion that will leave him with not much more to do for the rest of his life than stare at a wall and wonder where his slippers are. I suggest he thinks about calming down a bit, which sets him off again. “CALM f*#king DOWN?” he screams. “Do you know who you’re f*#king talking to, pretty boy?” I don’t, which annoys him even more, so he tells me, and things get heated again and we’re both swearing at each other. This attracts the attention of a passing Chris Welch, who mimes the question: who are you talking to? I tell him it’s some onerous tw#t called Don Arden, who’s threatening to have me so badly beaten up I’ll never walk again. Chris pales, becons MM assistant editor Mick Watts and news editor Rob Partridge, both of whom flinch when Chris tells them I’ve just told this Don Arden bloke to get f*#ked. Mick making it clear that I should put the phone down now. He’s clearly taking this a lot more seriously than I am, until Rob gets out Don Arden’s file with a piece Rob has written about him, headlined “THE HIT MAN”, Don turning out to be an old school music biz leg breaker with a history of violence, intimidation and frankly wholesale corruption, who once hung impresario Robert Stigwood out of a first floor window in a managerial dispute over The Small Faces.”

SB - I like that song quite a bit. Thanks.

Remember when Hank invented The Twist and Chubby stole it from him?

The story of the Twist becoming a hit was rather bizarre. "The Twist" was released in 1958 as the B-side of "Teardrops on Your Letter." Although Ballard tried to tell the recording company that "The Twist" was the better song, the company disagreed and refused to change the recording. The public actually agreed--"The Twist" never reached higher than 16 on the top hits charts, but "Teardrops on Your Letter" rose to number four. "The Twist" came to the notice of Dick Clark, director of American Bandstand and he wanted the group to come on the show and perform the song. By this time, the group was called Hank Ballard and the Midnighters. There are several opinions of what happened at this point, but negotiations fell through and Ballard never appeared. Reportedly Clark was disenchanted by Ballard's rather notorious reputation involving the lewd lyrics of the Annie songs.

Clark, however, knew that "The Twist" was something special, and he held auditions to try to find someone else to sing the song. He chose Chubby Checker because he sounded the most like Ballard. Checker apparently duplicated the Ballard recording, right down to the dance movements that he went to the Midnighters to learn. In 1960 Checker sang the song on American Bandstand and the song along with the dance craze became a major teenage fad. Checker's recording of the song hit number one on the R&B charts both in 1960 and again in 1961. Ironically, Checker's version was so close to Ballard's that Ballard thought it was their recording when he first heard it. Although Checker's recording of "The Twist" was to become the most popular, it also catapulted the Midnighters' recording with it. Ballard followed this success with several million-selling dance hits like "Finger Poppin' Time" and "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go."

As long as we're going off Yonder's Wall, if Jiles Perry "J. P." Richardson, Jr. was the Big Bopper, who waas the Little one?

I have some ideas, but I can't say just yet.

rrider: correct-o-mundo! On second thought, though, if any of us was in that big a hurry would we be spending so much time telling everybody else what we're listening too?
