It all started when Ron swung by the Tahoe City trailer park in his new pride and joy sedan. "What ja doing in this neck of the woods?" I holler down from roofing my scrap shack.
"Going to the desert to do SR with the Bird, you up for it?"
Ten minutes later I was packed abandoning my dwelling's bad needed repair, job and any hope of immediate income, I became the third leg of the "Battle of Wounded Windshield II" epic.

Here's what we were out to climb:

Here's JB on the Summit (statute of limitations apply's after 25 years, right?):

JB Summit Silhouette:

Ron Snooz'n on Summit:

That Night's Ritual Fire Celebration:

So we get back to Ron's car after several days to find all the tires slashed and all of the windows broken or cracked. Needless to say, we're not exactly doing something legal, totally broke, without the modern luxury of debit cards, and in a foriegn country...sort of.

Jim called his wife Peggy and somehow charms her into wiring $75 so we can get 4 bald tires to drive home on (she's an angel!). The temps drop and we're all cruising down the highway in our sleeping bags keeping the speed under 50mph just to stay warm. With just pocket change, we are surviving off tea ("you can get free water refills" Jim tells us) and ketchup (free as well).

So all is well, or so we think...until we pull up to Flagstaff where they're enforcing chain controls in a fluke snow storm. I mean we're fishtail'n like crazy as we come up to the officer pulling folks over to chain up, and we all agree to just stare out the windows like bewildered tourists. Succesfully avoiding the officer's eyes we fishtail right past him and somehow make it over the summit.

4 bald tires: $75
Replacement windows from a Las Vegas Junkyard: $125
Memories: Priceless!

hey there all.. say, these are great shots here!!! ...

say, as to that post or so, just up above mine---what is it about folks "busting up parked cars"...poor ol' cars, innocent, they be...

i am backing tracking now, to understand just exactly WHERE you were ( i got it--you left tahoe, and then i lost it somehow?)

*you are lucky you-all WERE NOT sleeping in your car on night, before you set up the mountain....

man, oh, man... most likely that is an understatement...
sure glad you made it back safe

such wonderful trips sadly should not have to leave one's car in a mess....

hey there... oh my.... well say, now... seems the car was taking the "hit" for you all.... oh, my....

so.... in days gone by, perhaps, had many of you folks ever had permission to do that climb?---i know it is a mighty fine climb, i would reckon...

but respect is always best, 'tis true...

This is from the top-out on Sea, June ’78. After being on the wall for 10 days, we were all bowl-legged and walking like drunken sailors, so we set up camp the ways we was use to. All three ledges were on the same line and in the middle of the night, Dale dropped Theodore, (aka Theodore Emond Bear, aka Teddy-Bear) gets up and scares the heck out of JB and I…I’m dreaming that it’s one of JB’s A3+ bivi anchors pop’n out!

Just after we got camp established that night there was a meteor that lit the sky (like daylight) up for so long…I’ve still never seen one like that again. Later we asked tons of folks down in the Valley if anyone else saw it…no one did…musta been in the Mountian Room Bar ‘cause you couldn’t have missed that sucker! A great close to a fun adventure.

PS… Theodore slept in Dales embrace each night and always was with him on walls. His job: to pilot the haul bags safely to the ground (the historical method of getting the gear down was launching the haul bag with a sleeping bag parachute and hoping for the best!)

Dang Todd, you have been everywhere!

Nice Whitney shot, Jody. Obviously we weren't quite as tight knit a group:

The guy in the center's name is Tom (a stylish gent as you can see.) They guy to his left is a retired Navy Seal, Harold as I recall. They did the East Face while I slept in and blasted up the East Butt later to meet them on top. I'm not sure how they got all that crap up there, 'cause I carried nothing... The nice character of that day changed quickly when we realized Harold - a model of fitness but not used to altitude - was developing pulmonary edema.

Tork, is that the Totem Pole?

Museum, love those high Rockies. You seem to have seen a few summits.

Jello, those are happy historic pics of Destivelle.

Festus who?

Everybody, fine thread, keep it rolling.

Chiloe, not the totem pole. We did get a few pictures of it on are first day there

but when we came back the next day it was gone. I knew we should have done it the first day befor the damb thing fell into the sea.

We settled for a nearby seastack called the Moai.

Not as exciting as the totem pole but we did almost get swept off into the sea.

Tork, you got more of that cool stuff? I've thought that we needed a seacliff thread some day.

but when we came back the next day it was gone. I knew we should have done it the first day befor the damb thing fell into the sea.

Don't ya hate when that happens?
