Dogs with Wings

You wanted to go out
I saw you doing doggy things
And you ran about so freely
As though you had two wings

Then you ran on up the hill
And you sniffed around the trees
Then you ran across the field
And you chased after some bees

And then you chased a cottontail
And you wiggled under the fence
I called and called your name
But you're a dog in your defense

But then you wiggled back again
Was it your name that you heard?
As you ran back down the hill
Then you saw a passing bird

Then you jumped into the air
And you sprouted two big wings
As I saw you fly away
And I've seen many things

I've never seen you do
What you did upon that day
But when you came back home
Your wings had gone away

I was rubbing my two eyes
And then I pinched myself
I woke up from a dream
And saw the clock upon the shelf

It was time to let you play
I got up and let you out
And you never sprouted wings
Though there were birds flying about

I held a secret hope
That you were a magic being
Then I feared you would fly far away
Never again to be seen

But you ran around the yard
And you came back in the house
After drinking lots of water
You were quiet as a mouse

I know that you will never
Grow wings and fly away
But I think that if you could
You would love us anyway

I know you're just a dog
And you do many a doggy thing
But the loyalty in your ways
Brings out the best in you and me

For Daisy
(And her people)

Off with the kids at play
They had Daisy there that day
As they drove the long way home
They had Daisy on the way
Daisy with the soft brown fur
Daisy was so good
Daisy pup they loved you
As much as anybody could

At the crag or in the parking lot
There was Daisy at their side
Most anywhere that they would go
Daisy would abide
Daisy with her muzzle soft
And Daisy's furry feet
Daisy they all loved you
With a love that was complete

If they could have listened to
All of Daisy's puppy dreams
And all the good things Daisy thought
And how her heart would sing
When she was with her people
Time was endless and replete
The love that she returned tenfold
Made for a life complete

Daisy they all loved you
And they knew you loved them too
They knew that you would do for them
Whatever you could do
Daisy you were a good girl
Though life can be unfair
Daisy they'll always honor you
Because a dog like you is rare

Off with the kids at play
They had Daisy there that day
As they drove the long way home
They had Daisy on the way
Daisy with the soft brown fur
Daisy was so good
Daisy pup they loved you
As much as any family could

Emma has not been herself the last few weeks and started having accidents in the house for the first time in her life. After her kidney failure last year she has been on a special diet and doing really well with what kidney function she still has.

But several times the last few weeks she has peed in the house in the middle of the night. I have been getting up a couple times at night and letting out but I slept through the alarm a few times so now I have her sleep her big kennel cage but still let her out to go at 1 AM every night. Needless to say I'm getting less sleep but, whatever.

Well this last week I noticed she had really lost weight, she's been drinking tons of water, peeing a lot more than usual, and has been making gagging sounds before she eats, not after. She still eats normally.

So we just went to the vet today and she is staying over the night. It turns out that she has diabetes, a UTI, and elevated ketones levels. She will be getting fluids and insulin and other things to get her blood sugar back to normal again.

I will go pick her up tomorrow and luckily she had not become completely rundown and was still eating normally. She has been fairly active, but she lost 12 lbs (she normally weighs around 85 lbs). I will be giving her insulin shots twice a day for the rest of her life and there may be other complications to follow with cataracts and other things that I need to be prepared to deal with.

This sucks but, other then the inconvenience and expense of taking her to the vet to be monitored fairly often and the cost for the insulin and syringes, I know it could be worse. She should be able to survive and live her normal lifespan barring the unforeseen circumstances.

Any help or suggestions from you dog owners out there who have pets living with diabetes would be welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks,
-bushman

Bushman:
I do not have a dog with T2D but I have a suggestion: Between 8-10 am every morning spend perhaps 30 min. to 1 hour with Emma outside. Make sure she gets sunlight on her coat and into her eyes for some of that time. Other than that scrupulously avoid food containing grain/sugar.
Good luck

That's tough, Bushman. Hang in there. Yeah, we need to avoid the grain with the hounds. Cutting back on that with humans isn't a bad idea either.

It's been five days since I picked up Emma from the vet and have been giving her her insulin shots. So far she is doing pretty good. I was supposed to take her back for 5 more visits once a week and have the vet do glucose curves so we could get her insulin dose adjusted. It was going to cost another $400 ($80 per visit) to bring her back five more times to have the glucose curves done.

But when I picked her up on Friday I had a run-in with the vet and their staff. They were overcharging me for the hospital visit for an extra day that she did not stay, plus other tests she did not get, and they charged $99 for an antibiotic that only cost me $16 last summer.

This vets office was formally run by a vet that I went to for about 25 years. A couple of years ago she retired and sold the practice to some company that owns and manages it now. They have had several veterinarians come and go since then. At least the vet I saw there last summer always called me back when I called. She was really good and diligent about following up with me and treating Emma when her kidneys shut down and I nearly lost her last year.

I'm not saying that the vet I saw this time was incompetent, but it didn't set well with me that when I pointed out the discrepancies they were unwilling to negotiate and told me that it was clinic management's policy and not the staff's responsibly to adjust my bill. All told I ended up paying nearly $1000 for one day of hospitalization, a bunch of tests, antibiotics, IV fluids, and some meds.

Last year she was there for five days, a whole slew of tests, about a dozen medications sent home with me, and the bill was $1800.

I called their office on Monday to ask them some questions about insulin and also wondered why they never gave me a follow up call. They told me the vet was busy and that she would call me back the next day. I haven't heard from them since. All day yesterday something in my gut told me things weren't right with them and I didn't feel good at all about taking Emma back there to be treated.

So I canceled my glucose curve appointment with them and consulted with another veterinarian who would charge me $100 for more tests, an office consultation, and whatever more they charge for the glucose curves. I was really feeling frustrated. Years ago I used to give my dogs all their shots and do everything for them except the rabies shots. I was an EMT when I was young and thought why not research this and treat her myself.

So I read up online about doing glucose curves and testing your dogs glucose levels at home. I found a wealth of information and so many different web sites and videos on how to test your pets glucose levels at home that it made my head swim.

After reading about it for awhile it all began to make sense. I ordered a good kit for doing glucose curve checks online and it is being shipped out and will be here on Monday. I'm actually excited about taking care of her myself and don't have any fear about overdosing her or anything stupid like that. Emma is so sweet and I love her dearly, and I would never do anything to hurt her. I believe I am competent enough to do half the things a vet could do and if I have any problems I would take her to another emergency vet hospital that I trust and have used before.

Bushman, we too have been gouged by Vets at the time of consequence,
it seemed that it was a plan.
And has happened more than once with other pets at their passing too.

I have the said, sad chore ahead of me, for our 13 Y'R old Bunnster.
We would like him to make Easter, if he is not suffering . (Still eating but has a bladder control issue.)
I ll read the rest of what you said now.
But
Know that I'm thinking' of you and Emma, I hope that is of some benefit.
We love our fury friends they are a reflection of our best selves it is so hard,
and that an industry that pro-ports to offer aid, is so corrupt hurts n' scalds to the bone
Peace...

Ho B'man! yes We too have followed the exact road with or daisy-dog last year, so similar, almost losing her then not getting the same old trusted Vet.,
and getting Gouged...
I'm now at the same point as you ,
We study, both of us taking different approaches to the problem. We can not spend to have the Animals euthanized, and that leaves a sad end being sadder.
Here they zap you for the size of the dog based on Healthy weight, from the records not - the dying animals weight.
Daisy was 92 pounds and stood tall, the Vet wanted ^bills and another Fee for cremation and all.
Im not sure how that old girl knew that ... but last march, when there was no sign of spring, and it was all snowy still, she curled up by the heat and drifted off...

I'm sure that you will take perfect care of her,

and Dale, if your are reading this do a brother a solid and get in touch.

Oh dear. Bushman, find a new veterinarian. Spend the money ($100 for an office visit and testing is in all honesty more than likely quite reasonable and in the grand scheme of treating a diabetic dog for the rest of its life, a drop in the bucket) and establish a relationship with one now. Do NOT try to regulate your dog on your own with the help of Dr. Google. You are NOT a veterinarian and internet "research" is not going to make you competent enough to do "half of what a vet does" no matter what you think. Besides, you're going to need regular vet visits to be checking urinalyses for UTIs (often aysymptomatic in diabetics), bloodwork for other diseases that complicate or develop secondary to diabetes, etc. anyhow, and you're doing your beloved pup a serious disservice if you try to do this alone.

Do NOT take medical advice from people on the internet - even qualified people, like me.

Please DO learn to check blood glucose and do curves at home, and I would not go to a veterinarian who insisted that glucose curves be done by them, in the hospital (with perhaps the exception of the very first one after starting insulin). However, do NOT try to interpret them or adjust her insulin dose at home. It is NOT easy and you WILL get it wrong and there is a much greater likelihood that your dog will go into DKA and need to be hospitalized again - which is going to cost you more money. Reading on the internet can NOT teach you how to do this no matter what you think.

Also, re: diet - I would NOT take the uninformed recommendations to automatically exclude food with grain except on the advice of a Veterinarian. I can think of multiple reasons why a low carb/high fat/high protein diet could be bad for an older diabetic dog. There is no blanket "grains are bad" statement you can make, unless you're a dog food company who's trying to peddle their overpriced, "all natural" "holistic" "primal" and whatever the adjective du jour is food.

Also, Gnome, I'm going to try to ignore the comment you made that the veterinary industry is corrupt, but I will try to say the following as civilly as I can in light of that comment - letting a your dog, whom you claim to love, and whom you KNEW was sick enough to be euthanized die "peacefully" at home because you didn't want to pay your veterinarian to put it out of its pain and suffering is flat out inhumane. Dying because your advanced kidney disease made your calcium so high and your potassium so low that your heart stopped beating after your muscles got too weak to move you, dying because ammonia built up in your blood because your liver stopped working and so your brain stopped functioning and you stopped moving while you slowly suffered, dying because your heart disease was so advanced that your lungs filled up with fluid and you suffocated to death while unable to oxygenate your muscles enough to move, so on and so forth, these are NOT "peaceful" deaths no matter how "peaceful" they may appear to the observer. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE NOBODY DO THIS TO THEIR PETS, EVER!!!!!!!!!
