Phil,
Hey. We've never met, but one of my uncles is Pat Merrill and he'd get a kick out of both these old slides and hearing from you. I'll try to dig up his email and shoot the link his way. If you have it, do the same. I'm sure he'd love to hear from you. And if I'm getting the story right, didn't you and him make some home-made hangers in metal shop and put up one or two of the friction routes to the right of the Water Course on Big Rock?

Scuffy - I remember the Kronhoffers well. Anyone who has broken in a pair will never forget them. I don't think the other shoes are Cortinas. I seem to remember them as a little more refined over what I'm wearing in this picture, but that was long ago and I could be mistaken...
With people on ST often posting old slides from their collection (with mixed quality) this thread was meant to be about good results I got a from a scanning service. Its funny how Big Rock gets people going. It meant a lot to many of us in our early years.

Hey, good to hear from you! I stopped and saw Pat Merrill this summer on my way home from a Tetons trip. He's doing great, and your right I should send him a link to this thread. Your also right about the hanger story. We tried making several different kinds of climbing gear including pieces of 2X4's with hole drilled to use in wide cracks (sort of a non-bong).
And DonC, I find your comment about Big Rock interesting. I agree there is something about the place. Perhaps for many of us it was the place that spawned our dreams, the place where we conceived our goals.
Or perhaps it was just so much fun to be climbing then and there.
Post more pictures! I love every one of them!

Great pix of B Rock before the reservoir. Must've been a really nice setting then.
Good job on the scans-- and funny seeing those RRs looking so new and shiny.
The other shoes do look like Pivettas to me, too. And someone in SoCal must've retailed them, because I've seen other period photos of Kamps and other locals in Pivettas at about the same time.
Other folks did copy patterns, though, so it's possibly another maker with a similar pattern.

Love to see more of those early Big Rock pics, especially if someone has pics of Phil Haney.
Here's one of the earlies ones I have, of Rick Accomazzo at Roubidoux, soloing the 40-foot, 5.7 slab on Joe Brown boulder, circa 1970. Note the Robbins boots, which were the thing back then.

Yeah, that sounds likely. They certainly look like the ones I've seen.
The ones in the slab shot are Kronhofers.

I don't need all of my slides scanned, just the best ones, so I did it myself.
I rented a Nikon Coolscan 5000 last weekend for slide scanning. If you are fussy about image quality it is the only way to go.
It has a special setting for Kodachrome scans. It will create jpgs, tiffs and even images using the Nikon raw format so you can adjust exposures with a post processor.
I am now on the lookout for Coolscan on craigslist - should be able to find one for 400 or 500 bucks cdn.
It seems the colors on Kodachrome have not deteriorated at all after 30 years.
