I just bought a few cams from Greg, pre-yard sale. Very fair price, plus he kicked in Rock Prints, his book.
Thanks man,

Rock Prints is really the best! Stunning to have my eye forced into black and white, seeing form, sensing shape, noticing afresh climber ensconsed in landscape. I like the small format. Instead of hitting you over the head with sheer scale, it asks you to dig in there and work a little, participate in drawing the great worthy worth out of those photos. Plus it includes one of the scariest tales ever from one of our greatest spinners of tale, Peter Croft.
And isn't that where (my copy's across town) Mariah Cranor came up with the great line about climbing being a "strict mertiocracy"?
I like Greg for being a shining example of modest. One day I was at Cave Rock with Epi and Lynn Hill and Geoff Weigand and Mike Strassman shooting video. Epi got clocked pretty good with a rock -- probably peering into his lens and didn't see it coming. There was a lot of blood as always with scalp wounds, but we finally got a good look at the flapper and it really did need a few stitches. I drove him to a doc-in-the-box at Stateline. When we got there he couldn't wait to shoo me out of there to get back to Cave Rock. Didn't want his little wound to distract anyone.
Greg, you are a true artist. Among lens folks, that's rare. You've got a fine eye.

Greg has carved a niche for himself in the world of climbing through his unique eye.
And believe me, I know about carving niches in the climbing world,..

Greg is one of my very favorite people. A creative genius, amazing photographer, great sense of humor, awesome climber, and like the Dr. said, genuinely humble. He tells great stories about the characters from "the old days", too...

What's all to be said about Greg ? What would The General say ?
Generous to a fault. Sure liked his place in Bishop.
Amazing eye for the photo. I could not begin to see the stuff that he said RUINED a shot.
I cringe thinking about all the soloing he's done with a fat pack full of equip on his back.
Interesting, entertaining, etc.
Still, his best quality is that he's not KP.

Hardly know Greg, but we did do some sort of photo shoot, at one time. Can't remember exactly what. But I do remember a very likeable and affable man, who left a great impression on me. And his photography speaks for itself, of course.

Greg is the greatest. He has sandbagged me more times than I can remember.
The first: I had just moved to San Diego, it was 1985ish. I was hiking down Mission Gorge road with Mooney and Freriks. Along comes a Toyota 4x4 and out pops Eppie. Freriks already knew him. Freriks says something like "cool here is Ep, he is a local and can show us the classics." Greg hops out, he doesn't even have his shoes or chalkbag on. We are heading for the "Pink Boulder." We are walking along the road and Ep deadpans "huh, look at that wierd boulder." It is like a nose, jutting out over the abyss of the canyon from road level. There is huge exposure and an injury guaranteeing fall into the jagged boulders below. My trained climbers eye doesn't even see a line. Suddenly he sprints ahead turns perpendicular to the road and leaps like superman out over the abyss. He latches the end of the nose and does an incredibly dynamic mantel onto the very end. Our jaws drop, our hands sweat, we are flabbergasted by this "impromtu" performance. Greg says something like "huh, that was cool." We were so blown away we just followed him in awe without really knowing what to think.
I have since seen him pull similar moves that years later put that one into some kind of perspective.
The last: It was the 2nd Josh climbers rendevouz. I see Ep, Linh Nguyen, Dave and Jen Wonderley and John Sherman hanging in the parking lot.I go over to chat and someone says "let's go climb something." Eppie says, "I know a new Gordo 5.7 near by, how about that?" We are all psyched, I mean a 5.7 isn't too threatening, it sounds like fun and we are off. We get there and Greg is trying to get me to take the lead. Luckily John volunteers to lead and heads up. The rock doesn't look all that great and John hesitates a bit. He soon makes the top while making comments about "kinda' feelin' a little out of it" and the rest of us follow in turn. When I see Linh hesitate I am thinking "hmmm", I am a little worried. My turn comes and whoa, I can barely keep my feet on the horendously gritty smears. I barely pull it without skating. All of us reply in turn, "that is the hardest 5.7 I have done in years."
The next morning I see Todd at the rendevouz and ask him about the route. He says "dude that route is 10b and some of the worst rock in the park!" Well.....he should know!

Greg is a "class act" in my opinion. He has a wonderful friendly spirit.
My wife of 18 years now had no connection with any climbing, climbers, or any activities related to climbing when we first started dating some 20 years ago. I had taken her to Tuolumne for her first experience in Yosemite or even the great outdoors for that matter. I don't believe she had ever slept out side before this trip, she was a complete noob in my little climbing camping world (sorry Babe but it's true.) At some point we cross paths with Eppi, I say Hello Greg he smiles says hello Tommy, Hi Chris. My girlfriend says hello Greg. I am like WTF you guys know each other? Turns out Chris had done some work for Greg printing his buisness cards and what not back in San Diego.
I ran into Greg the last time I was climbing in Josh about a month ago. He and I joked and had a chuckel about how we think she secretly had a crush on him back then. She denies it to this day, but I do remember her commenting on how beautiful she thought his long hair was at the time. When she said that I thought "thats no big deal I can farm hair to" Hehe LOL
Greg your a good man! I am proud to say I know you.

Here's a photo of Greg with some custom QD's
A friend a I were doing some climbing in ORG after getting shut down on a Mt Humpheries winter attempt. We ran into Greg in Bishop one evening and he said he would like to join us the following day, cool. He quickly showed us how we were going to die using two oval biners on the bolted routes. Yes we had a set of slung hexes and stoppers with us that he quickly set up as QD's. Trad dudes in the gorge, what were we thinking?
Thanks for schooling us Greg

Greg was one of the original san diego team -
Spent many days at the local crags with him and others...
I am and have always been very impressed and inspired
By his rise to photographic greatness.
Too many good memories - he may not remember
The day I caught his ass on some runout sick thing
At canyon tahoe - reeled in a lot of slack, you could
Do that with a hip belay :)
Without eppi san diego climbing would have been
Lacking - a motivated guy for sure.
Remember the stilts he used?
Pretty cool.
