This one could go either way. In one hand- he is a fascinating individual. Very much like a character out of the Old West.

On the other hand……..

This could be a good one.

He's helped me quite a bit and I'm looking forward to meeting him at Sushifest in IC.

I wasn't gonna post this in the SW thread, but it seems to me that Ron has been very vocal about what he feels is the evolution of acceptable standards based on the constant influx of new information - IE pounding pitons in soft rock years ago vs the damage the routes see over time, visible now but not in foresight.

I give mad props to anyone that is open enough to see and modify their position like that. Some seem to call it hypocrisy, but I think you have to maintain behavior while telling others not to do it in order for that to be accurate. We live, we learn, we try to do better - that's HUGE in my book...

Now, on the antagonistic side of things - yeah he's rubbing some people the wrong way. Personality ? Not sure if it comes down to any more than that...but I do know that the delivery is just as important as the message, with the flip side being that people are going to provoke a response one way or the other sometimes.

Yes it damages the rock. Would we lose access if someone got seriously hurt or worse trying to raise the bar though ? Lawsuits and land use concerns being what they are, I'm not sure this one is at all cut and dry...one too many lawsuits/rescues/injuries and this whole game is going to change, imho...I'm not saying that's justification, just a valid concern.

One n00b's opinion...

If loss of access must occur, I'd rather it be b/c because someone raised the bar than because someone lowered it.

Unfortunately Junior broke free yesterday and has evaded discovery and I'm pretty upset. (Do you think it shows in recent posts?)

Ron's OK. I've talked with him a bit, here and there, in email. We're all quirky, we all have things we do that bug people. Strong personalities are a part of climbing. And, of course, internet forums make us all "experts" and bring out our tough guy syndromes! hahaha I think Ron brings good points to the forums and his posts are, most times, enjoyable to read.

Hope you find Junior and he is well, Ron!

Pickaxe Ron's buttons are easily pushed, but it's sooo much fun!

And he does tend to stay in the hot kitchen, LOL.

I confess Ron, I ate your lizard, with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.

But seriously, I bet Ronbo is fun to climb with, and probably a good pal to have, as nearly every other internet butthead I (used to) climb with is like that. There is something about curmdgeonly irrascible climber dudes. I guess they have character or something, and they are interesting. The climbing banter tends to be quite amusing en route.

However, back to the point, it's far more fun and useful to deprecate internet losers who start accounts and post threads just to bash people.

Soil in Visual Orifice,

Didn’t start this thread to bash RonO. Just wanted to initiate a healthy discourse on a thread apart from the Streak Wall thread. OlyO simultaneously launched his Ammon for President thread, so this one sort of evens out the scales of justice.

If there is some character bashing to be done, I have no fatter target than you. But I shall refrain…

Ron,

Yes, I was going aim a barb at Dirt but decided, nah. I've got too much love in my heart, so I deleted the verbal jab.

But you do agree that this thread is a better place for your admirers and detractors to have their say – versus the Streaked Wall thread, yes? And the Ammon for President is really a place for HIS admirers/ detractors to have at it.

Thus, you got your own thread. Once again.

And I got tired of my old pseudonym. It’s time for a new personality. It’s like getting your hair colored, er.. getting a new hair style, er…

I posted on this forum that I was having a 40th birthday party and invited anyone that wanted to attend. It was all locals except for this one guy that I didn't know - Piton Ron. He showed up with two nice bottles of sake, a big gun and a bigger lizard. Since then he's been someone I regard as a true friend. Bash him I could (and have and will again!). Before I do that though....

Hoping he shows soon!!!!

I am appreciative of Ron's efforts in establishing so many fine routes.
I've climbed at least a half dozen of them and they were all great outings.

I also enjoy the online banter. I may not agree with him (or anyone here) all the time but that's part of living in a community.

Cheers,

how about that deleted post to Dirt saying your fight wasn't with HIM.

To the gang,

Maybe I got too upset over the AWOL liz, but all I did was ask Ammon for a number which some seventy odd posts later I still haven't really gotten.

Ron stands for what he stands for, and it seems to me that from what I've seen, he expects a person to back up their mouth if they go shooting it off(just trying to get a gun pun in).

He's also been very generous with his sushi-rolling at the fests. I know that I wouldn't be able to do that. I think he was generous with allowing others to handle his firearms/use his ammo, too. Considering that he values them highly, that's pretty cool, I think.

I got nothing negative to add, but then....I don't know Ron all that well!!!

Edit: I hope Junior shows up soon!!!! Maybe he's crawled into a snuggly warm place, if the temperatures have recently dropped?

Agreeing or disagreeing being immaterial, I appreciate that Mr. Olevski is willing to engage in the dialogue. I also appreciate the game he plays, i.e. putting up lines in a sustainable style. Because of his participation in the vast human pretend we call society, i have the upmost respect for him.

WRT Trapeze: I guess I suppose the humor in my comment regarding the route was lost. I had little time that day. I looked up at the wall and spied what appeared to be good rock with holds. I didn't know the name of the route. Perhaps the lack of chalk should have been a sign. BUT I WAS IN A HURRY!

And hey! If nothing else I made The Pelted One laugh and that has to be good for something!

Ron IS generous. I quizzed him for information about southern Utah climbing when I lived in Utah and he shared a great deal of beta at the expense of much of his own time.

He's also forgiving. I jested with him about implications of locals destroying his property, not knowing the full extent of their crimes. He got irate with me and let me know it. That was my error. But he realized I was naive about the offenses and overlooked my insensitivity. Ron brings a great deal to this forum, especially his wit, knowledge and sense of moral propriety.

Ron, I dread your mormon threads and wish you and Pat would meet and talk out your differences. That's a feud that shouldn't be---have no doubt you would like each other, should you meet.

Hope you find Junior. He's become somewhat of a mascot, here.

Wes,

Your sarcasm is misplaced. Would you jest with a crime victim about the crime knowing the full extent and implications of the crime?

I didn't know the whole story before jesting with Ron. A mistake on my part. Ron let it go rather than hold a long term grudge. To me it showed some class. Are your feathers really ruffled cause I bring it up? Why?

Personally, I'd rather keep out of these internet feuds. I don't know Ammon and have nothing against him. Pat Ament is my friend but does one need villify one participant in a feud to show "loyalty" to another? This is an appreciation thread of sorts and I wrote what I appreciated about Ron. What is that to you ?

w/c - If you'd said "wankers like the rest of US," your post would be okay. But that you seem to think you're exempt( because you definitely give the appearance of being one of the bigger wankers of the site, in case that has escaped you) makes your slur.....a dud. Edit: And if you think you will derail teh Ron A/D thread, maybe you should get a Westchrist A/D thread of your own. Give people something to do over the weekend....

And - when I wrote that I had nothing negative to say about Ron, cause I didn't know him all that well, it was my attempt to be joking. In my book, he is all right. Like I said - I know some people have had altercations with him. On a lesser scale, there are website users who have a compulsion to disparage me often. I figure that most of us have some people who don't like us, and if we don't it's probably because either we are not showing ourselves truly or worse - that we are boring!

As time goes on I've realized that Ron is a kind and caring soul (more than the rest of us) to those who deserve it, and rough on douchbags (rougher than the rest of us) who had it coming. Might have mixed up a few douchbags with caring souls at some point in his life, and certainly has his prickly moments (more than the rest of us as well) - proving that nobodys perfect. Bottom line, good guy.

Speaking of douchbags:
