Morning Jeff,

just wondering, are you going to be at the Ouray Fest in January?
is the fest worth going to?

Went yesterday for a first of the season shake down and had fun.
Nothing like jello's cool shot but nice and better than no ice.

Nice photo, Jeff!

Do you ever do any dry tooling in anticipation / training for the winter?

Where I live there are a few designated "dry tooling" crags. Fun stuff to use your tools and your crampons in t-shirt weather.

Very timely Robb, I just met a guy two days ago who told me all about Jeff's indoor climbing facility. Sounds very cool (haha).

Jeff, I was wondering if you had any good Ice climbing pics from the Trinity Alps?

"if you're going to walk on thin ice, you might as well be wearing stilettos!"

hahaha

hey jello, timely thread! a climbing partner and i were just discussing yesterday how we want to hike out before it snows to this place where ice only forms in the winter when it's really cold. i'm happy that i'm more fit this winter, i'm ready for the cold i'm so excited! i love the adventure we're planning - stealth bagging of flighty routes!

With New England rapidly becoming a tropical rain forest I expect more conditions like this.

Try http://www.montanaice.com/ for current ice conditions around the Treasure State and YNP.

edit: according to Jojo, sounds like picks have been stickin' ice in these parts for a couple of weeks now.

Thin ice may be better than no ice, but fat ice is better than thin ice.

I pulled the tools out of storage, just for training later...

I doubt I'll be healed enough or strong enough this ice season though ... thinking more of next alpine ice season in the Sierra and the winter of 08-09 ...

Shack,
the term good is relatively, but I hear tell that the best Tahoe ice is in Coldstream Canyon.

photo @ top is from Poke-o-Moonshine, a nice big cliff up in the Adirondacks (NY).

unless I'm mistaken...

I haven't swung my tools since moving to CA three years ago! Maybe this winter I'll get the bug again; climbing every day in New Hampshire for four winters prior makes me appreciate sitting in the California sun. Or fog.
