Thanks Steve! Your shots took on Iron Hawk inspired me to start lugging the big SLR along. Had to give up film though. Too hard with gloves. You go digital yet?

Chris,
I'm looking at the Canon 40D, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I bought my daughter (Julia) the XTi and have been playing round with it, but my flash is not compatable with the thing and the hand is kinda small...so? I want to have it before my gimp attempt on the Captain next spring.
On that note...I'm back to training after a week off due to the fires here in good 'ol Poway. The air is clearing up and got out for a paddle on Mission Bay last night with Jay-mon. Had it to ourselves too. Dead calm and glassy water...nice!
Dude, I hope to see ya this winter out at Josh. Been wanting to ride my handcycle out there for a while now. It would be cool to sit at the base of some of the climbs and heckle while suckin' down a few coldies.
Your pal,
Steve

Thanks for the thread and thanks for the bump, I missed this one first time around (climbing and a signifigant birthday of someone I am close to).

What an adventure!

Some spectacular photos in there.

” What's he thinking right now? Well let's see;
He's a gym climber/boulderer who got his new ice boots
wednesday($150 Ebay), had never ice climbed until
today, followed his first trad route yesterday(south
crack), and now he's "Big Boot Bouldering" with a pack
on....all in the freezing cold wind. The fun isn't
over yet. The exit rock is covered with slab ice with
a few crystal knobs sticking out(3 moves). Not pretty
but he pulls through it with the belly flop technique verses mantling.”

That is f*#king awesome! You broke his cherry like high school senior on a drunken sophomore at the prom. He knows what the gym is for now, training for the big stone. Great TR, very nice pic’s, sweet adventure!

I think I read this thread before but it was worth reading again, with a great set of photos and a story as straight as the route.

Very nice report and great photos. I too missed this the first time around. The North Peak area is very scenic and nicely accessible. Even in August we saw very few souls when we climbed it's NW ridge a few years back.

Stunning shot of Laurel Peak. The classic route up it is so obvious in your photo. It wasn't when we climbed that a few years ago as well! :-) We got off route, but still had a lot of fun... the joys of alpinism!

Nice TR and pix.
A good distraction at work on a rainy Saturday in SD.

I hiked North Peak and Mt. Conness one day with two of my climbing buddies, and it was an amazing day!
Of course, we did it in August or so - not too much snow except on Conness' descent.

And we hit the road well below the parking lot and had to hike up to get to the cars, too. Whew! What a day!

Thanks for bumping this, Nostrodomas. I missed it first time around.

Great TR, Chris. The photos were some of the best I've ever seen. Not an ice climber myself (any temp below 65 puts me in a coma), and am constantly amazed when you guys can get to camp at 7:15pm, pull wet sleeping bags out of the creek, and go to sleep! All without going hypothermic.

You must have polar bear genes.

Thanks for taking the time to post this--I finally learned what "dinner plating" means. Now I'm going to go turn on the heater...I thinks it's under 75 in here....
