An incredible ingathering of the clan, six generations in one room, counting the kids. I don't have a photo of the main event, but here is a smaller (four-generation) gathering at the Mountain Brauhaus a few days earlier.

A key to those in the picture:

1: Mike Sawicki

2: Rob

3: Bob D'Antonio

4: Top to bottom: Gene Smith, Iza Trapani, David Feinberg

5: Top to bottom: Russ Clune, Rich Romano, Burt Angrist

6: Top to bottom: Steve Wunsch, Anka Angrist, Rick Cronk

7: Top to bottom: Jeff Gruenberg, Laura Smith, Richard Goldstone

8: Back row L to R: Eric Keto, Mark Robinson
Front row L to R: Marcia Wunsch, Barbara Devine

Big Yellow Taxi (Joni Mitchell, 1972)

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot,
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot.
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don't know what you’ve got ‘til it's gone,
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot.

etc etc.

Luckily none of the forebodings in the song seem to have come true, at least not at the Shawangunks, in part due to the efforts of jstan and friends. Part of it is, sadly, closed, but no one seems to be planning to pave it.

Maybe one of the most emotional weeks of my life. Seeing everyone and how well most of us are doing was/is heartwarming.

The Preserve did a wonderful job on the main-get-together on Saturday night.

The Gunks is a very special place with very special and wonderful people. Thanks to all of you who played a very large part in my life.

I will post some photos in a day or so when I get back to Colorado.

It sure was great to be apart of the Gunks family reunion.
One of the particularly touching moments for me was when my 9 year old daughter topped out for her first time on rock. She made me wait before lowering her on top rope saying, "wait daddy, I want to take all this in." The friends and fall colors made this weekend magical.

Oh, wish I were there to tip a brew and tip and teeter on those lovely walls with fall colors blazing all around. Mostly I climbed there with Bob Kamps and Dick Williams in several trips in 80's and 90's. Once we stayed at a gorge-yourself-on-super food bed and breakfast with broken down beds, then with Dick at his woodsy place with the big TV. As fun as climbing was riding Dick's bikes over the smooth carriage roads, eyes streaming in the fall air.

Flipping through the old diary I see just for the Trapps: OBSTACLE DELUSION, P-38, INSUHLATION, FRIENDS AND LOVERS, COMMANDO RAVE, STIRRUP TROUBLE, SILHOUETTE, SCENE OF THE CLIMB, PINK LAUREL, BIRDIE PARTY, SON OF EASY O, NOSEDIVE, DIRECTISSIMA, HIGH EXPOSURE, ON ANY MONDAY, ARROW, THREE DOVES, THIN SLABS, 1ST PITCH ... the smart, apt names flying by conjuring bright rock, cool fall air, rustling leaves as if in a live painting, yellow jackets, beer, laughs after climbs, and of course Bob, only memory now ...

Just reading the route names brings the same old mix of excitement and terror one gets from the place. Bob and I used to joke about how your climbing brain fell out of your head the first few days at the Gunks, as you cranked your neck up to see still more improbable, overlapping roofs. Somehow, the steeps of Lovers Leap and Yosemite didn't gird the loins enough to avoid the scare, then big bang joy, then scare, then ... Everyone on this thread already knows.

Cheers to the place, the people who know and love all its inches, who remember, celebrate, come together in honor of the bonds climbing brings, and of course the rock, air, and my companions of those days, all seeming both long and not long ago.

Tom...that was just wonderful.

I know how you feel about your times with Bob...we lost Kevin Bein (and others) and the huge void that they left has never come close to being filled. We have our memories and how these wonderful people added so much to our lives.

Kevin, Tom and Howie, Hans and Fritz (and others) were there with us this last weekend and as long as the stories are continued to told...always will be.

Gunks Two will happened next October...hope you can make it.

As Bobby D recounted, this was a fabulous week. There was a little rain in the middle but we climbed 8 out of 9 days.

The one day we didn't climb, a group of us took a hike to Millbrook which was like walking along the rim of heaven with the laurel and azaleas in full on autumn splendor. As we dangled our feet over Millbrook’s void, it was great to hear Bobby D’s voice on the cell phone speaker when he landed at JFK. I asked Bobby how he looked. He said, “Baby, I’m so handsome, when you see me you are going to drop Gene like a hot potatoe.” The laughter that followed typified the entire week together.

One person described the week as a "laugh-n-hug fest." Another participant claimed it was the most amazing week ever and that they had more fun and feel better than they have felt in years. Another described that the combination of timing, place and people was magical, food for the soul and sustenance for the spirit.

The love and affection that flows through this group is humbling and Gene and I are so grateful to be part of it.

We had several great parties (at Romano’s, Raffa’s), a special dinner with Steve and Marsha Wunsch (who had to travel onward to a wedding) and finally a fantastic evening graciously hosted by the Mohonk Preserve.

The momentum is already so strong for next year and the list one third larger. They say you can't go back, but going back for this reunion was so amazing not only because we celebrated the past, but because we are now reunited for the future.

Doesn't Mike Sawicky have a climbing technique named after him along the lines of "Gastoning" a wide crack ala Rebuffat? I recall hearing that from Steve Ampter when he lived in Tucson long ago. The Gunkie expedition to climb the virgin 5000' face on Mt. Thor. Now there's a proud tale!

Hey Gang--

Yep, one hell of a week for sure. It was super fun to see some faces I've not seen for close to 30 years. Even getting together with locals who don't often find time to crag together. For me, seeing Hugh again, along with Jeff Gruenberg was extra special. We had so many gripping times together in the early 80s. It also brought to mind other losses, people who would normally have been around in a Gunks autumn. Jack Mileski, Alex Lowe, Wolfgang Gullich...an unfortunate list of friends lost, but vivid memories.
Seeing the kids of the next generation was heartening as well. Celia Gottlieb and Shelly Gruenberg running around with my daughter, Mayv, was hilarious. They fell in together as easily as the old gang.
See you all soon, I hope. A special thanks again to Laura for orchestrating, and to the Robinsons for deciding to journey back east and provide the seed for the gathering. The planning for a reprise is in the works, and we hope to see many more faces here in a year.

Yeah, Bobbie, much of the 1970 era Romano abides (gear, style, ability). 100% old school. I have a couple photos you may not have seen.

He's added a couple "wheels" to his rack, but not many and he still carries wog-wogs as you can see in this recent photo.

The next photo is from early 80s in Alabama. Note that Rich is "saving rubber" leading a 5.9 crack in his sneaks.

I like this 1992 photo of Richie in his Nurse's Aide pants and a hawaian shirt. He's introducing some West Point cadets to Millbrook.

I also wanted to post a couple photos of Sawicky leading Simple Suff, 5.10. Mike led this classic overhanging corner first thing on Saturday morning. It is not exactly the best warm up for 50 something year olds, but Mike has superb technique and made it look easy.

Here are the folks hanging with us at the bottom of Simple Suff: Patty Matteson, Mike Dimetri, Elaine Mathews.

I have heard it said there is no going back, well we did and it was incredible.

I agree there is a resemblance with Johnny Dawes. But the cadet is Eric Walker who in 1993 was the Cadet in Charge (CIC) of the USMA Mountaineering Club. On that day he led the last pitch of Square Meal after Rich Romano led the first two pitches. Eric is now a Major in the Army Special Forces. He still climbs when he gets a chance. I know Eric will attest to the fact that climbing in the Gunks with people like Richie contributed greatly to his development as a leader.

Like I said before...Richie is one of kind. The reunion was a chance for all of us to reconnect and appreciate each other again.

My years in the Gunks was like being in a commune...we climbed, ate, talked climbing/life and sometime slept together (in the same house).

It was such a great sight to see the cliffs on a Friday evening and the anticipation of seeing who was going to be at the Uberfall was almost too much at times.

It really was wonderful.

Richie is the greatest in my book if Kevin was the Mayor Rich is the unsung King of the Gunks. To my knowledge no one has spent as much time all over the area developing new routes on outlying cliffs.

I loved that he called Millbrook the Bank and would say, Let's go to the Bank snd make a few withdrawels".

It has been my pure pleasure to climb with him the last 34 years. We have shared many amazing times and the joy of having our own unique names and language for everyday things

Then we used to call half and half; 50/50 or arf and arf and now he says when pouring; "I'll need to take an extra Lipitor today".

Absolutely everything said about Rich Romano is true---and more. No one has kept the faith as he has. With a resume of bold ground-up ascents stretching back thirty years or so, he is probably the most prolific Eastern climber ever, especially in the realm of 5.10 and above.

His incredible energy for new routes and for exploring remote areas is matched only by a complete lack of interest in self-promotion. There are very few climbers who have achieved anything resembling his output of hard new routes who have flown so completely under the climbing community's radar.

Richie recently turned 50, which (at least from my perspective) puts him at the youngest end of the "newly old" spectrum. He will tell you that injuries and other responsibilities and interests are slowing him down (he is a fine classical guitarist, and has a "guitar season" during which he maintains his fingernails and cuts back on climbing), but when you see him flying up 5.10's and 5.11's in his gym shorts, swami belt, and skimpy rack, you can only tremble at the prospect of him in full form.

The world is what we make of it. I have not been to many places but here is what I have seen.

Tetons: When you get into trouble the Tetons tell you, "You have not been very smart. Stupid actually, but we are too genteel to use that word. We will let you get free this time but try to be smarter in future. Please!"

JT: JT will meet you with whatever tude you are suffering, It says, OK if that is the way you want it, you are not going to get any protection and then we will throw the ball bearings at you. If you come down on a rope you are just one level lower than a skink. Oiy veh!"

The Gunks: It says, " Here you will know as you do it that you are looking for trouble. But we want to support you and we will find a way to get you out of trouble, But please help us!

Yosemite: It says, "OK boobsie. We don't give a damn what you have in mind. Just know that you are going to sweat. Streams of sweat. All for nothing.

Edit:
Every Facelift is its own special paradise. At one of them I was in El Cap Meadow dealing with all the just plain people who wanted only to help. I looked up at the Nose and said, I won't again trouble you. The Nose said, "Nor I you. And then added, Don't you think this is a much better relationship?"

It is.
