I miss New England in the fall... Perfect temps for climbing rock at Cathedral, Whitehorse, and the Gunks, wondering if a Halloween ascent of the Black Dike will go, every climbing area (even Hammond Pond) is beautiful beyond belief. Enjoy it.

Yeah, that was a good day. I'd been wanting to revisit Last Unicorn for years.
It was fun watching a real photog at work too, leading or rapping or anchoring to doo-dah, whatever it took to get better angles.

Enjoying it as fast as I can! September seemed a pretty good month, although looking back I see that meant I got out four times, once each weekend -- full-on weekend warrior mode, since the rest of the time I'm in terminal jockey/couch potato mode.

October, sometimes that's an even better month here. Hope so, here we go. Temperatures falling, leaves turning brighter and before long falling off.

Loved the aspens, that's another thing I miss about the west. As for next week, not sure yet -- Leslie and I were thinking about Acadia next weekend, but the forecast is iffy right now so we might stay White Mountains. I've got a day job that keeps me tied down most of the week. How long you out east?

Tomcat and I played hooky from work a few weeks ago and went to western Maine, about 15 miles from Canada. He thought I should expand my horizons and off we went to fly fish, something I'd wanted to try for some time.

The colors were beautiful and ahead of the Conway area by a few weeks.

After a 5 minute crash course, Tomcat set me up with my own rod. It was fun and challenging and I actually caught a fish. We had a great day relaxing on the water, soaking up the rays, enjoying the colors and lots of good food and beer!

Talus, beautiful pictures (as usual).

Chiloe, over the years, meeting Gill's criteria has been hard to impossible. Now he's gone and gotten older than us and is using that to establish yet another level we haven't achieved. The only difference this time is, sooner or later, we'll all catch up with him, an eventuality that never presented itself in the bouldering realm.

Bob D, climbing Thursday would be nice, but methusalistic credentials notwithsanding, I'm still a working slob with a daughter to put through college (and, shudder, beyond...). However, the professing profession being what it is, I might be able to climb on Friday...

Those Cannon skies are saying "Don't bother to approach. Stay warm. Leave me alone."

Did you see the Alpinist Cannon extravaganza?

You missed out on some scary-flakes, lichen-coated, I'm-sorry-about-this-approach-honey
adventure climbing under friendlier skies the day before.

Yeah, Chiloe, I ran from those spooky Cannon skies for the less adventurous Echo, which was perfectly sunny and warm. My re-subscript to Alpinist got goofed (my fault, not theirs) and so I missed #21 (didn't realize there was a problem till I saw the issue in a store), but the circulation folks are hookin' me up.

What route is that at Sundown??? That lichen funkiness at the top looks like it might have made for a sketchy finish.

What route is that at Sundown???

We climbed Thwarthog, which I've always wanted to do ever since Peter Yost explained the name way back when.
But I never got 'round to it until Sunday. From the condition of the route I think a lot of people never get 'round to it.

It has some great climbing (bottom photo on the previous page shows pitch 2), fine exposure and views.
The adventure level felt a step up from Cathedral, though.
Stacked flakes and expandos for your holds and gear both, good places to tread lightly and not fall.

Jingus ball-nut and 00 TCU in this photo I wouldn't trust for aid.

In the better-late-than-never category, I finally have a couple pics to submit.

From last weekend, a crisp and gorgeous fall day at the Gunks.

A sassafrash bush turns...

As the fall foliage peaks...

I raise a Friday beer-o-clock toast.

Bravo to Nature's gorgeous beauty. May she shine on and on and on!

Color's almost done around here.
In the woods this morning a lot of bare branches, and only brown leaves on the ground.
Tomorrow's Nor'easter could knock the rest down, hope it doesn't take out trees as well.
From then on, just pines to break the monochrome until April.
But there's a kind of winter purity to that.

Not yet, except the odd leaf in the forest. But you can feel it coming in the air at night.

This year is expected to be one of New England's best fall color displays in awhile. Things are looking good so far in Franconia Notch. Here are few pics from a family bike ride. (PS we ran into several parties who were apparently retreating off of Whitney Gilman due to rock fall...I just thought it looked cold up there.)

Eric, it's great to see you folks got out there, bikes & all. Looks fun!

Feels like we're missing the great leaf show this year.

We are very fortunate to have fall colors at various elevations here in S UT for a good 3 months.

Here's a few from the high country:

It had rained hard the prior day and on my way up the creek had into a flowing pumpking pie type color from flash flooding on Cedar Breaks above.

A week later I went back to the high country and all leaves were gone. Driving home in the lower elevations the last light was magical.

Been working on this photo project where I attempt to capture the leaf mid-air between tree and ground. It gets Zen-like very fast. Like nailing a hummingbird with a pea-shooter. Only a few decent shots per 4 gig memory card. Anyway, here's a few tries from the Red River Gorge a few days back.

I see great shots, great ideas, great places.

Bare branches, though? Not so many locally.

There are colors left, subdued and waterproof.

Inside it is different.

The ornamentals still shine bright but are lying low.

No, I moved on to Whitehorse right after. We were just driving around waiting for the slab to dry out before starting up.
