Random I know and not political, sorry.

Bridge of Khazad-dum

Some ice route in the Gaspe in Quebec. I think it was named for a pastry or a preacher's ahem... unit.

Le Mulot. Another ice route in Quebec and probably one of best in North America.

Oddball new route we found in the woods of NH.

This was source of inspiration, we refer to it as 'dream crack'. Mojede stumbled upon it during a spring hike, but since it was north facing and a bit snowy, we decided to wait on it. It's almost 30 feet tall and goes from tight fingers to wide hand/fists at the top. IMHO this is one of the best problems on the Delmoe road...

So yesterday evening we went to go get on it. It's a bit of a hike through the sage, pines, and junipers to reach this particular problem...especially if you think it's better to B line it, instead of going in the way you were shown...

We did run into a couple along the way though...

And eventually made our way the objective...

man, this thing would be just ridiculous without the good starting feet...

because getting feet after it is pretty difficult...

Darkness came before the send and we had to head back to the rig...somehow though, navigating back through the forest in the dark is not as straight forward as it seems...a 20 minute hike turned into a 70 minute hike, but somehow we managed to stumble back onto the road...

As I type this, my fingers are battered and cut up from the attempts and my ego is a bit bruised from taking such a genius way through the woods, but I think my memory will just remember the sweetness of the problem. Next time though, I'm sticking to the original approach...

I think this one would have been nice had the sky been blue and the climber wearing something other than rock colored clothes, but it was a good day nonetheless. It was raining all day (Sunday 9/9) and this wall overhangs enough that it stays pretty much bone dry.

The boys took turns whipping. The clouds rolling in were pretty awesome.

Is that the Daks in the rain? Looks like fun!

Missed out Sunday's rain but GO and I slimed our way up Cathedral in Saturday's maxed-out humidity. Finishing P3 of Intimidation:

Yeah, sorry. That's the King Wall in the Dacks. Route's called Kingdom Come, I think, 11c or so. I was way too hungover to even contemplate giving it a go. The King Wall's awesome because it overhangs so much that it stays totally dry. You need to go like ten feet out from the base before you start getting dripped on.

Saturday was beautiful in the Dacks. It was pouring buckets at about 7AM when I got up so I rolled over, and when I rolled back over around 8:30, it had stopped. We went up to the Spider's Web and found clear blue skies - AND it was way warm. Definitely still summer. Not a ton of humidity though. I led Slim Pickens, which I was pretty psyched about because I've only done a few other 9s clean (two at the gunks, and one at cathedral). It was unfortunately not an onsight but whatever.

It climbs a crack in a corner and is a stemming problem with a couple-of-face-moves crux, so it was right up my alley.
Saturday 9/8

I was more psyched on Monday when we went over to Poko and I onsighted Casual Observer, which is definitely 10. Bolted for the most part, but I was still pretty psyched. I'm feeling strong, mentally. I think I'm going to try to get on Le Teton this weekend at the gunks. I think GO just did that over labor day weekend? I'm already pooping my pants thinking about it!!

Earlier this summer I finally went to the Daks (for rock climbing) for the first time in 30 years of climbing. It was fantastic! Went to Poko and the Spider's Web. Great stuff! Too bad it's such a long drive for me. There's just no easy way to get there from here. Six hours no matter how I slice it.

GO - it's nothing but steep cracks! Big ones, little ones, straight ones, diagonal ones, all cracks. Slim Pickens is kind of the exception because it's in a corner (but it's a crack, too) and it's the easiest climb on the wall (except maybe Mr. Roger's Neighborhood which gets a 5.8 which is largely easier, but I think the start is a little less straightforward and trickier).

Wootles - it's about 5 for me to Keene, and then another 40 or so to Poko for me, and I've been doing it on average about twice a month for about the last two years. 6 isn't so bad!!!

Here ya go. These are wood nuts that Dave Rearick made, and George Hurley led on, the day in 1973 when that team made the first all-wood ascent of Twister on Twin Owls. The recommended pro for this climb nowadays, sez MountainProject.com:
1 set small to medium nuts. Single set of SLCDs from green Alien to hand sized. 2 #3 Camalot, 1 #4 Camalot, 2 #5 Camalot, 1 #3 Big Bro

Incidentally the picture above was shot at the same time as the one below, which I posted awhile back as the "worst historical photo ever." Nobody could identify the climbers when I posted it (how could they!), although we had several inspired guesses. Anyways, left to right they are Dave Rearick, George Hurley, Tom Kaufman, Betsy Herbst, Joe Herbst, and Deborah ?

Well the ice just to the right is a climb called Panther Falls. It's a nice 4+ (depending on conditions). It doesn't fully form up until later in the season. If you ever go do it just take a peek behind it.
The Cinnaplex roof is about the size of a tennis court. No matter what people think of mixed climbing it's damned impressive to think folks hook their way out that thing then actually have gas left to climb the ice afterward.

Chiloe - climbing in the Northeast woods in fall is a glorious memory for me, the crisp clear air and the red and yellow carpet of the Hudson River Valley spreading out from under the 'Gunks, or hugging close to the base of Cathedral Ledge or Cannon Mt. Dolofright was put up by Tom Gilge, one of the bolder climbers of "my generation"...(hahaha, that last phrase sounds quirky).

I'd want balls & brawn to do the types of climbs he put up. 'Last saw him in Moab fall of '96; we reminisced about our favorite roped excursion together, Rostrum N Face, done back in '81. Tom is thuggishly strong and always hung it out there proper-like. Last I heard he was tossing big air on BMX bikes and scrappin' good in that arena, with total abandon for his age disparity.

Dolofright is a perfect Gilge route name.
He was our answer to the Brit's Johnny Dawes: both cats brilliantly mad!

Shouldn't that piece of protection below the roof have a longer sling to minimize the potential danger of the rope getting cut on that sharp edge on the roof in the event of a fall in the area above?

To season all these sharp, colorful modern CLIMBING photos, I'll toss in a couple of fuzzy dark ones from the wayback machine.
Originals, no doubt better quality but long lost to me, were maybe shot by Bob Wright?

This would be Mike Munger and me making what we believed was the 3rd ascent of the Kor-Boggs route on the Matron, 1972.
Maybe Oli knows more history? It was rated "A4 or A5" in his guidebook, so that felt a bit adventurous to us.

Yeah, that's how I always climb -- solo up to put gear in so my lead will be safe!

Leo and I went out there at the end of a lazy day (last Sunday), having just done our "big" climb, North Overhang on Intersection Rock, where neither of us had a hand free to shoot what felt like a most photogenic crux.

So anyway, we went out to the Real Hidden Valley because I'd never done Wild Wind and figured that route, like North Overhang, ought to be short enough for our borrowed rack of 6 cams. Wild Wind went fine although afterwards somebody mentioned that you're supposed to leave the crack and diagonal out right at its top, instead of finishing the more obvious crack and arete like I did. Doh!

Then Sail Away was our wrapup for the day.

Roy,

Bozeman is about an 45 minutes out from what is considered the 'banana belt'. Drive west a bit and you're in the driest part of the state.

It'll be overcast and crappy in Bozeman, and pretty much everyone here is locked into the idea that it's ski season. The problem, at least last year, was that the ski season was a bit of a joke...

I climbed more days last winter than slid on snow...

Roy, Tom lives close to the banana belt, but luckily I live closer. Imagine leaving your snowy-lawned house to drive over the Continental Divide--starting to look grim for dry stone. Then, you drop down into the "snow shadow" of the CD and it is near desert-like (no snow, blue clear skies, etc...) and you are rock-climbing/bouldering in 30-40 degree sun temps in the middle of Winter--very weird.

Living within 20 minutes of dry rock 80% of the time in Winter is one reason that I re-located here from Paradise Valley. There, the town of Livingston was dry (from the chinooks), but the the rock was snowy ('cept for the Allenspur, but shhhhh).

Here, the town is snowy, but the rock is dry.

Holy shite, I'm telling people that Montana is knott a winter wonderland everywhere--watch out locals, here come the hoards.

Hey Chiloe, what did you think of the Riverside Quarry? Tell the truth...:-)

The truth is ... I had fun. See, I was hanging around Hangar 18 at the end of a long-weekend trip, mostly just taking advantage of their hotspot to get some work done, when Brian suggested a late trip to the quarry, which I'd never seen. So Brian, Tom and I got out there in late afternoon, walked across that mutant-breeding-toxic-waste-dump-soon-to-be-real-estate-development wasteland, hiked up to the wall, and straight off jumped on Flexercise which is so heavily glued I had to laugh, but the climbing was steep and fun. After we all took a turn leading that, Brian fired up Trundle Trophy, Tom & I followed kind of lunge-fully as the sun set, and since nobody fell we went home in fine spirits.

Even better, there was a celebration later that night. I took this to be my going-away party, though I don't think anyone else saw it that way.

Twisted, after a four-year hiatus (that included a baby) and one warm-up, my lil sis decided to restart her climbing career on this favorite of hers. Shortly after the top pic was taken, she launched in to a full-on layback, gunning for the thin hands (perfect hands for her) above. As she reached for that first good jam, the feet slipped and the swing began. Good drama.

I didn't think he was going to stop. Remarkably he walked away relatively unharmed.
The photo is a little deceptive. Below the bottom of the frame there's at least another 30 to 40 feet of vertical before the ground. I figure he went roughly 50 feet maybe more.
It was really an event to behold from my vantage point. Would have truly ruined my day had he gone all the way to the bottom.

I've got one of them too. A collection of Sterlings, it seems.

Your's truly on the big arete above Fish Slough Rd., just outside of Bishop. Maybe around 2002. God I love that climb. I miss having long hair.

On the day after returning from their big Tuolumne/Donner trip, this dynamic duo were still psyched to go climbing.

A few of our super-heros Chiloe and BrassNuts from our outing:

Our objective. A mighty rock. :)

Before the approach. Included a treacherous creek crossing and steep scrambling. Some bushes even had thorns.

A terrible photo I admit. But in this photo, you can see Chiloe has just pulled this roof. He was solid, but for me, it was a bit more exciting! I had a moment going over it thinking "uh oh, I'm off". Somehow I managed to get my foot to ear level and crank over.

BN joined us after being released from the cube-farm.

He headed up some two-pitch climb.

Chiloe belaying on pitch two. It's actually starting to get dark...from storm clouds.

Final shot of the evening.

We got to the car just as the skies opened up. All that remained was a yummy dinner and drinks in DT Boulder. GREAT FUN!

Crimpergirl probably hoped I was belaying attentively at that moment, but no, I was taking this picture.

Sweet thread. I particularly like the first two pics.

OK. I gotta ask, does a preachers unit really deserve a special name. Is it blessed by god, Jebus, or something? My unit feels slighted.
