I've always thought the name "soccer" to be utterly silly. I mean...really...take a minute and look up the origin of the word. I get that we need a way to differentiate between our football game -- appreciated by some small fraction of the world population -- and the football game that's played and appreciated by some very large fraction of the world population. But rather than use a silly word, I think it's entirely within our capability to make the differentiation just by how we say "football".
For example, this coming weekend (plus Monday night at 5:30pm PST), I'm going to be watching a whole lot of fuet-bawl on TV. But come next Summer, I hope to catch some LA Galaxy fuut-bowl matches when they play at home. It's so easy for English-speakers to make this kind of distinction when pronouncing the same word. So let's just do it, and let the silly word "soccer" quickly fade away.

You are right. We should use the name the people who invented the game use.
As soon as the Italians and the Greeks sort it out I'm going to call it Episkyros or Calcio. It still works for them.
The name comes from the contraction of Association (Assoc.)Football the Brits used to differentiate the sport from what was then the big football sport, Rugby Football. Lads at Oxford and Camridge were fond of contractions with 'ER' at the end. They also used 'Rugger'
It is how they introduced the sport in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, and other English speaking countries. Some still use it. In New Zealand it's because Rugby is still the big sport, ( the All Blacks play football. The all whites play Soccer) and the USA, Australia, and Canada have other football rules. Get over it.
The Brits stopped using it altogether around 1950 after they entered their first WC and got embarrassed by a USA amateur team. Rumor is they will switch back if they ever beat the USA in a FIFA Finals competition. ;)

Saw a couple games there when I was at Cambridge in the spring of '90.
The money from the replay at OT will be great for them.
Their whole team makes annually about what DiMaria and Falcao make in a week.

That was probably the best the Gunners have played since that away win at Bayern 2 years ago.
If they can get another central defender as cover and keep everyone healthy, they could be quite strong the 2nd half of the season.
One of the reasons Chelski has done so well this year is that they have had so few injuries compared to the other top teams.

Re: Cambridge. Seems their manager/ travelling fundraiser, told his players if they chose to "swap jerseys" with ManU, they would have to pay for the replacement themselves. So, they didn't. Also, refused to raise ticket prices for ManU game, as un-fair to loyal fans.

Steve, you are funny.Spurs absolutely destroyed Arsenal. Late goals are part of the Spurs gameplan. We've got 12 points off goals at 80min or later. The high intensity pressing game, combined with superior fitness, is all about running down the opposition, outworking them, and then maintaining that intensity as the opponents tire and being to make mistakes, lose their runner, etc.

Still trying to teach my daughter that perfectly executed sliding tackles are illegal in u8 rec soccer. Makes almost as much sense as the name, depending on your senses.
