Open, clear, no traffic on California Highway One, between Cambria and Carmel (Big Sur!), post-midnight/late-night, during a full moon. The reflection off the ocean was so bright, I turned my headlights off for about an hour's worth of low-RPM cruising, au natural.

I WISH I WAS OUT THERE, RIGHT NOW!
Gas is too expensive, and I don't have the little open top Porsche anymore. The Rolls Rover eats gas so fast, I have to keep it parked.
But, I can still see that great Luna from my window. And remember.

The long straightaway under a full moon in Monument Valley,
the 20 mile stretch of perfect motorcycle turns in the Salt River canyon,
spruce trees and sky as far as the eye could see on the Alaska highway,
and that young lady in cutoff jeans, hitchhiking to Denver with her husky puppy.
Not necessarily in that order.

Money found:
 $125 on 6th Avenue once, probably from someone headed over to the weekend antiques market that was a NY landmark(and now the space holds 20-story "luxury" renatls, starting at$2400 for a studio)
$5 on the floor at a bar(Made note to self: Always check the floor by the bar, since drunks often are sloppy and a person could probably find some good stuff...Get it before the barkeep at closing! Even if "rightly," that booty should be theirs..... A week later, I got sober. Damn! My goldmine lost for(hopefully)ever...hahaha

I found, in no particular order:
a long ride from Reno to Des Moines all in the backs of pick up trucks
out of Afton Utah? (west of Jackson) I got a ride with a viet nam Vet truck driver who talked all night long about two years he had to get out of his soul
Kevin Fosburg- i had just hitchhiked from the Wind Rivers and i got dropped off at Tuolumne. As I get out of the car I look up and there is this seedy character who i had met three weeks before at Devils Tower. what are the odds?

Hmmmm…….best thing ever found on the road? How about a life.
1969-first road trip to Yosemite: Met life long friend Dave Hampton in Camp 4. Some of you may remember him as “Bones” who had the unpleasant distinction of taking a 100’ +/- ripper on an early ascent of the Nose which was arrested on a hip belay provided by none other than Barry Bates.
1974 road trip to So Cal from Eugene Oregon: I run back into Dave Hampton at Tahquitz Rock who introduces me to the late Jon Bowlin. Again some may remember Jon as a climbing partner of Dean Caldwell in Peru who later distinguished himself as a BASE jumper which ultimately led to his demise. Given all the sunshine, girls and beautiful granite up at Tahquitz I move to San Diego which was really an overreaction to the weather and academia in Eugene.
1978 road trip to Yosemite on Memorial Day weekend: That’s right 29 years ago I’m driving up from Pacific Beach with my ex-wife and decide to visit Jon Bowlin instead of fighting the crowds in the Valley. Jon had moved near Lovers Leap and introduced me to the rock and area along the Highway 50 corridor. I moved there later that summer and have lived here ever since.
1992 divorce and miscellaneous road trips: I met the love of my live Nancy climbing and later marry back in Yosemite Valley.
Get on that road and follow your heart.

Late one evening, Lucho and I were driving to Toulumne Meadows. A few hours earlier, a truck had hit a fawn and the tiny deer's body lay outstretched on the side of the road near the meadow. Lucho drove a little passed it and then parked. We stepped out of the car and he walked to the carcass. Bits of blood soaked into his shirt as he picked the fawn off the ground. Lucho carried it into the woods and lay it down, running his hands over the soft hair of the fawn's nose. We walked back to the truck. The moon was brighter that night.

How 'bout floating?
My bf's best friend from high school got married on an obscure Carribean island last year. Our cabin was in a mostly locals-only bay. In the middle of this bay was an island that had bar-b-q, drinks, and a music but no power, running water, etc. You had to either swim or boat there. We decided to swim.
J rented some snorkel stuff for the adventure, and the snorkel guy, a rummy seeming Australian warned us sternly that the rum punch was no joke there, and that if we were going to have any of it, we really should make sure we had extra cash for the boat ride home.
The music was great and punch...well, strong. Not to be deterred by a little booze (we were just a little tipsy), we decided to swim back at dusk.
I was nearly back to the cabin when I realized that J was no where in sight. I swam back to the island again...no sign. The last taxi boat came around to see if I was OK, and I asked if he saw J. The taxi driver found him snorkeling around the island.
When I asked him what the heck he was doing, he told me that he forgot to zip the pocket that held the ziplock baggy w/ his cash...a $100 bill. Doh! We were warned not to drink the punch and try to make the swim.

One winter while headin to Cochise found a box loaded with Canada geese decoys. This was in Idaho, so i crammed them into the already full car. Once in Arizona I started handing them out fer x-mas gifts. These suckers made great hood ornaments. Later I priced them out at 100 a pop, should have pawned them.
Just outside Palm Desert we passed a whack of full boxes on the highway.
Heart racing I pulled a u-turn, parked and dove into one. Thinking I've hit paydirt, I quickly realize the boxes are loaded with furnace filters. At least 200 of em.
Bummer....
Would have taken them all, but the truck was already packed with bootied boogie-boards from the wavepool. For a brief second I pondered dumping the boards for the filters.

Best thing I found on the road was a man. :-) Bow chica bow bow!
My driver's ed instructor made me run over a porcupine during one of my classes. That was not the best thing that I ever found on the road.
Oh, I found a wallet once that I later returned to its owner. I wanted that cash so bad. I was homeless and on a road trip from Main to Florida. I got into an accident in Georgia and never made it to FL. The cop didn’t let me take the highway sign home that I plowed down. I guess that wasn't the best thing either
