June 9 &10, we're going do some trail building at the lower buttress, climb a bit, and hang out at the campground.

A great opportunity to give back to this well used area, meet some new folks, and have fun.

The campground just opened, the weather's fine, and moving some rocks will be great conditioning for sending your summer routes.

This is a community project - part of a class i'm taking.

Come on out!

Hey Jay, Trail work at lower buttress always sounds like a great idea, but whenever someone tries it always look just the same as before you started after the next winters run off.
Not trying to poop on your birthday cake, but trail work at the lower usually ends up causing more erosion than it cures. Cheers.

I talked to Petch, and he suggested working on that area, and that he has done similar in past years.

It seems to me that it's more about climbers descending than it is Winter that makes the mess.

My cake- really, let's keep it tasty.

Community service is always a great idea. I'll do my best to meet you there and help out. Cheers to you and your motivation.

That said; I feel that where the LB trail leaves the main (pony express) trail should not have significant improvements (probably not on your radar anyways). Not that Lovers Leap is a good example, but I really like the idea of keeping climbers trails less obvious from main hiking trails for the least impact to other users. Often I see Shaq sized carins there. Really not needed there and they are distractive. My .02 cents

Stephan,

Great if you can come. Not about making the trail more noticable.

I'm thinking at the base of Surrealistic, and the Groove. But open to suggestion.

Jay, I think I'll be around. If so, I'll try to make it and bring my guitar with me, along with a few other climbers.

Great idea and motivation, cheers! Having nearly ten summers trail building experience, I can say with confidence that the Lower Buttress area needs quite a bit of work.

How are you for tools? Pry bars, picks, shovels, etc?

I will try my best to be there one or both days.

elron,

Looking forward to you & your friends at the campfire.

slobmonster,

Your expertise will be greatly appreciated. I have tools, but another set incl bar would be great.

I'm looking into getting some gloves donated.

Evdawg,

Are you guys going to cut the fallen trees across the descent trail?

Sounds like a good idea, I'll be there.

Any particular meeting place or time or is it just in the campground on Saturday morning?

hi J. although the park service most likely prefers climber trails to be left as native as possible.. that walk off trail above Traveler's is erroding badly. Looks like someone did some "grading" of a trail up there but right off the top out needs a redirect to protect the hill.

BTW anybody know who was bolting or setting anchors just about 50yds west of the Line this past weekend? Near Psychedelic? New route or new anchors?

no, we didn't do any of that. we mainly focused on creating runnofs on the trail (to the top of the mainwall) to prevent water eroding the trail away.

it went good, (i was there last saturday) i'm also going this saturday.

Pyrrho-
Great, we'll look for you. I'll put out a small sign w/campsite #s.

LP-
Got a plan worked out with the El Dorado folks- primarily stacking up rocks along the lower buttress to direct traffic onto the trail that's away from the base of the wall. Whatever we do will probably get washed away next winter, but until then, it'll be GREAT.

Evdawg-

Take care of that cough. See you up there.

Saturday night: possible music, raffle prizes. knot tying contest, and possible repeat reading of the classic fish climbing tale. This was a hit at J-tree at new years.
