Anybody remember the good old days when the Camp 4 parking lot had the nice wood cookspots?

Then, a few years later:

Check out Werner's old van in the first photo from 1980.

I was always partial to the Lodge lot as a home. Here's Galen sitting on the hood of his bug which he converted into a camper by yarding out the passenger seat and building a wooden locker that doubled as a bed. Too short shorts as a bonus for BVB.

Most of you probably do not remember me from off and on from 1974-1977, as I wasn't a top climber or anything and would only hang out for a month or so at a time, though I have partied with some of you, but I'd bet some of you will remember a 1948 Ford pickup with a home-made wooden camper and a psychedelic paint job (from sanding it down through all the paint jobs it had over the years and then painting it over with shellac). Bridwell said he loved that truck. It sure got me pulled over enough times going from the Valley to the East Bay, especially in Manteca, Escalon and Oakdale.

Sure wish I could find a photo of that truck.

Wot a memory! Yep, that's my old VW van probably before it ever had an engine. What a great bivy that was.

That's Mugs Stump, Lynn (Mug's girlfriend at the time)and Steve Quinlan on the sedan. Steve and I had just finished climbing Tribal Rite in full-on winter conditions.

Yeah Stretch was the man 6'10 in a half inches tall. He had to duck to get into the cafeteria door. He had to duck all doors.

All kinds of girls always came up to him and asked him how's the air/weather up there.

He had that 44 magnum gun under his pillow. He said anyone going to mess with me will have nice hole between his eyes.

Them's were the days, when men knew what a screwdriver was and a wench could be had ......

Updates and clarifications:

Charles Cole had a Tercel that he never changed the oil in... ever... had like 75000 miles on it... decides to be nice to the engine and changes the oil. Forgot to put the oil cap back on after the change. Drives to the Valley, no oil left by the time he gets there... siezed! HOWIE Chapman rebuilds it in the Camp 4 lot.. the other Chapman (Walter?) is an accountant ( I think) and would knott know a wrench from a trombone.

Stretch: actual Iowa pig farmer... he has pics.... offshore welder for big $$$ when doing the work. Had a size 15 shoe, but a 1" pecker (made that part up.... I think) Real name, Steve Ortner. Had the Stretch Limo parked in camp for months.... some bad station wagon with a plywood sheet covering the entire back portion. He would lay in there like a corpse under the plywood and have us close the tailgate on him at night and then let him out in the morning.... the Tool could shine the flashlight into the the back of the Stretch Limo and see milk crates and climbing gear and dirty laundry.... little did they know that a giant was sleeping just under the false floor with barely enough room to breathe. Once when Tucker was bemoaning his sad and sorry life, Stretch had heard enough of the "I don't want to live" bullshiit.... so he grabs Tucker by the neck and plunges his head into the river and holds him under until it is understood that Tucker in fact wants to live... the giveaway was probably the wild thrashing for air and involuntary writhing by Tucker. Stretch lets him up and then tells him to STFU or he will end it for him right quick style. I think they then went back to drinking beer and talking about big walls or chicks or something...... pretty sure that last tale is true... any witnesses out there? Walt? ooops! He can't make it right now.....

Howie like WTF? Well glad we got that cleared up.

But I love that one and the Tucker STFU or else one. Still too funny!

Then one night when Walt is on one his benders and tells Stretch that he wants to off himself. Stretch hands Walt the 44 magnum and tells Walt do it or STFU.

Walt starts doing that crazy laugh and pushes the gun back to Stretch. Stretch then tells me that it's confirmed that Walt's knott crazy .....

Russ do I have this right?

Sounds right to me Werner... Stretch was always real "giving" to anyone interested in the afterlife. He was a facilitator to those who thought they need "facilitating". Russ used to be a machinist.

His employer once asked that he set himself up with a nice set of brass hammers.
In response he took an old chunk of metal, like a twisted piece of bicycle handlebar or something, wrapped it with some athletic tape and made do with that just to spite them.

He called it the “Mangler”….

Yeah, WB, have a great time today!

That's not Meatie, WB. Not sure who that is. Kinda resembles Leclinsky (sp?).

For further clarification on the CColonmobile saga. When I first met the Colon, he was concerned about his car probably because it was beginning to rebel against the total lack of care he was giving it. Not to mention how bad it smelled because of his feet, but that's another story.

I asked him if he changed the oil regularly and he said a prof at USC told him it was not necessary to ever have to change the oil in a car. I and a few others around were shocked, of course, and highly recommended that he do so when he got to town next time. Well, Russ and WB provided the rest of the story. CColon actually chastised me for his folly and said if he wouldn't have changed the oil, the engine never would've blown. LOL

The Gal in the middle is Melanie. I met them when Cliff Howard another guy Jim (maybe) and I were hiking up to do the Lost Arrow Tip. I saw two gals taking pictures of each other at the top of Yose Falls and told the guys I would catch up.
I hiked over to offer to take pictures of them together.
This led to both of them hiking over with me to watch.
That led two non climbers to the top of the Arrows tip.
Then the Ahawanee Sweet Shop and some climbs at Manure Pile.
They were so kind a few days later to meet Cliff and me topping out on Half Dome.
Melanie and I remained friends for a number of years. Her mom and Dad were really cool.
I was just in contact with her last September. Yes Dick she remembered you and was at my cooking (Lodge parking under the trees area) when Cliff , Yabo and someone , maybe Bard had a hot sauce drinking contest.
She was surfing for an event in Yosemite and stumbled on ST. She was scrolling posts and saw my name and thought I wonder? So she emailed me and we caught up on the past twenty five years.

Yup, and I went by Off White back then too. Here's a photo from 1985, maybe 6 months before Faith & I (with then-little-Ben) moved to Tucson. It's even a parking lot of sorts that a number of Supertacos have been to, so it's even on topic.

You and I did FIUTT and Desire one day in Tucson. You led Desire and must have thought I was looking a little iffy, since you set up a sling shot top rope and ran the rope straight through a 1" sling, perhaps not feeling confident I would make the anchor and not wanting to lose any carabiners? Hah, that might be why I remember it so clearly. We hung out at parties (Davidson's, Jimmerson's, etc) and Beanfests & such as well.

Mr Tobia Sir,

That first shot of Bill Fry is great. Haven't talked to him in a long time....

That second shot, the one of you and Pinky, must have been taken when I was rebuilding the differential on Bill Fry's truck behind the Gassineering Station in Tuolumne. There's plastic over the differential and at the ends of the axles. Bill's truck had a big horsepower Corvette 327 and he managed to snap the pinion gear.

Great shots. Keep 'em coming!

Mr. Mastadon,

You are correct. If you remember Bill asked me to help him, which led me to you since we pulled your VW engine out somewhere near that parking lot.

We had to go to Bishop to get parts for your VW. We used my camper (red toyota) to haul parts. Do you remember what happened with the VW the first time we put the engine in?

Bill let me have sleeping rights in the truck while he was in the TMCC.
That is KB's rig parked next to Bill's truck in Curry Village lot.
I had a picture of your Dodge camper but I can't find it.
I talked to Bill not to long ago. He is in Carson City.

That is Brossman's truck in the background.

We (you I should say because I merely lifted when you said lift) had to pull it out and put it back in because the distributor was reversed. You realized it as soon as you cranked it. I can't remember what was wrong originally, I know we toted some parts to a machine shop in Bishop.

VW's pesky little critters. When dredging for gold we used a VW engine to drive the pump. Is dredging still banned in California?

Wasn't that a 59 VW? It had the little flags for turn indicators. It was red. I have a picture that Jane took of us sitting around it trying to get the motor out I think. Seems like it was on the other side of the building by the propane tank.

Still got the Dodge?

That VW was one I bought from Terry Counts (who's in two of your pictures above with Nita) with a bad engine. It was a 1960 European model with the turn signal semaphores that flopped down when the turn signals were activated. I ended up giving it back to her many years later after she married Pete Minks and was living in Tahoe City. Don't know what ever happened to it.

Haven't had the Dodge since the early 80's.

I was trying to remember Terry's last name. It was right on the tip of my tongue. All of the pictures of Terry & Nita are in Death Valley.
I met Minks once when he was hanging out in the Meadows. Mike White had a particularly funny name he called him to get his attention.
I still don't know why the VW didn't run right the way you had it in originally.
Did that spark your memory?

In that beetle the passenger seat was replaced by a wooden locker, and Galen isn't the tallest individual, so it actually slept pretty well for him. As far as profile, the rangers just didn't pay any attention, there were at least a dozen occupied vehicles in that lot all summer, it was like an auxiliary free campground. Here's the inside of my home from that summer, shot while sitting in the same lot right next to Galen's bug:

I didn't spend as much time in the parking lot as the locals...

Anyone remember the Rangers on a full blown stake out looking for a BASE jumper back in the mid eighties? They were stopping anyone who even remotely fit the description and knew that he had spent the night in the SAR site.

Yeah, that was a close one. They were in plain clothes all over the place yacking to each other on the radio. Fortunately I was able to hear it all.

What was weird was we didn't even jump anything the night before. They wanted this one guy in a bad way.

"Stakeout" doesn't even begin to cover it!

Shelly and I were asleep in the PleasureDome™ way out in the North 40, Upper Pines or something, when the Rangers came knocking very early one morning to grill us on the whereabouts of a particular jumper. (Jonathan RIP).

Apparently TeamStakeout™ thought we knew something. Following a jump from Glacier Point, they were making their interrogation rounds in Camp Four where Little Sue innocently told them straight away exactly where we might be found! Not like we were hiding out or on the lamb or anything … just not so easy to find … after they left we about died laughing that Sue spilled the beans on our whereabouts so easily.

At least we experienced those times. A lot of people never did "enjoy" their youth.

My goal is to be homeless as soon as possible.
No more mortgages, property taxes, tenants, and HOAs.
Gonna live in my car and my boat.
Once a dirtbag,,,,,,,,

Stahlbro,

Your pic with the VW had to be after '84, the last time I was there and they didn't have the little gable awnings over the gas pumps.

I Sure regret I wasn't taking pictures early on. Could have added a 1941 Buick
Roadmaster and later a 1950 Studebaker to the memorabilia.

Me as well. Rarely carried a camera BITD. Digital has made it so much easier. So many good times were not recorded that I wish there were photos of.

Wow, lots of great photos in the last couple pages!

Mastadon's offerings from Mike White showing Drone and Brossman in 10 gallon straw cowboy hats are so vintage it hurts, in a good way.

Mike Bolte's portraits of Bill Fry (Frey?), Messick, Pinky bring it all back.

Old Fat Trad Guy 2: that group shot of the Wilderness Bound crew really sings!
I would love to see a full thread on that crew. You holding more photos?

There's so much going on here:

Looks like the trip leader on the left next to the blue Jansport D4 frame pack. He's shielding himself with his blue ensolite, while young woman to the right has her hand out in case he's about to throw it at the guy to her right, who is chucking pebbles at the trip leader. Young woman #2 standing in the longsleeve orange shirt is pointing the finger, calling out the photographer! Old-school army green A-frame mountain tent off the side of the road. Long wood-shafted ice axes strewn about, all of them 70 cm or taller, 2 guys in the upper right corner are grooving on a rare patch of Pac Northwest sunshine – I feel like I'm there!!!

Roy, I never would have known the lanky Miss P is Pinky, as I have only ever met her at Facelift just before she retired from running her campground.

Great gal!

Thanks for the identification.

Tarbuster, You got a lot of it right! except the person pointing is a guy, he actually grew up in New Paltz, his dad was professor at SUNY.

I have more photos to post at some point (link below)...What I wish I had was a photo of the trip leader sitting in a van with a broken key that got us busted for taking "free" showers at a KOA, we got off easy they made us pay for camping. Just to think that my parents paid for me to learn stuff like this instead of petty long Island criminal stuff.

El Cap meadow? I’ve been there half a dozen times in the past few weeks. I came by your little workshop cubbyhole looking for you but you were probably off free soloing Twilight Zone or something.

from the 1980s: Bob, his rig and Bill Frey's (correct spelling of Frey by the way Tobia and Tarbuster).

Story I got was Mastadon rebuilt Bill/Drone's Chevy in the parking lot down in the Valley when the gas station was still there by the main store.

EDIT: as I said, Bob Ashworth is the human in the photo, the trucks in the photo used to belong to Bob (the biggest rig on the left) and Bill Frey (the smaller, but still pretty big rig on the right)

Mike,
Funny how I misspelled "Frey". I email and text him all the time and have always spelled it correctly (except on any post).

I sent him a text the other day to look at the pic I posted of the truck on the Drone thread. I'm sure he will accept my apology and he understands the way my mind works.

Thanks for the correction.

I attempted to rebuild the rear end in the TMCC parking lot, but ran into problems. Mastadon bailed me out and did it correctly. Unfortunately Bill tested it after my attempt and drove it to Mammoth before it started coming unglued. Not sure which was worse the failed repair or Bill's disappointment in my efforts.

I remember it like yesterday as well, after spending so much time in and under it.

I sent the pic that Mike posted to Bill. He replied that wasn't he in the photo, it is Bob Ashworth. Could have fooled me.

That sure does look like Bobby Ashworth, Tobia.
I worked in the Yosemite Village Mountain Shop with him (and Andy Cox, RIP) his first year with Curry.
A real solid guy with whom I never got to climb.

I remember Bob hanging around the TMCC, but it looks like Bill Frey pose.

The last vehicle I knew Donnie to have was an old Dodge Valiant station wagon.

Edit:
I just read Mike”s post, I misread it. I’ve got to get my eye”s checked.

a bit far afield from parking lots but Mr Frey and I have taken some pretty fun bonefish and birding trips to various Bahama islands in the last five years. For his friends here who have not seen him in a few decades

I NEVER would have recognized Bill Frye and i know him pretty well. He looks like he could be in the witness protection program on a desert island.

one more from the 80ish. Some of these Bill Frey took and he had some challenges with the aperture, exposure, ASA, triangle thing. Some of these are really dark. This one looked like a black slide till I put my military tactical 5000 lumen LED flashlight behind it.
