Well, since you started with these guys...

And a black and white version

I'll let you guys decide which is the nicer. I like them both for different reasons, but I think I prefer the b&w version. I think it really shows the shadow detail. Of course, it will appear darker than it should if you're not using a calibrated monitor...

Cheers!

Not really towers, but I think they fit the theme... They'd certainly be tons of fun to climb, however, I didn't. Just wouldn't seem right, in my mind.

The jump across on Oak Creek Spire is rad! Makes the Mace step across seem as easy as stepping of a sidewalk. The belayer pays out a couple big loops of slack, and you take a few running steps and leap for good holds.

Here's another one in North/Central Patagonia

Piedra Parada. 500'. Overhangs all sides. Easiest route is sketch 5.9 chimney.

Damian on p.2 (.12a/b) of the route we put up called Swept by the Wind, 5 pitches, .13a/ish, in 2001. Follows left sky line up overhangs, then 4th class up ledges to top. Completely different vegetation on top. Sheep had never been up there...

P.4, 5.11

And on yet another tower toward the Atlantic coast near Trelew.

My partner and I are going to Castleton Tower around May 23rd. Maybe I am crazy but I want to bivi on top of the thing (or some other tower if that is off limits for Castleton)

Is that possible? Prudent? Anybody ever done so intentionally?

I have to say that I am truly amazed with the amount of experience that Todd has in the desert regions. I am a Mountain Project junkie and spend lots of time looking at what is new in Moab, Grand Junction, and the Black. Seemingly out of nowhere Todd comes along and gives me hours worth of pictures and new routes from his archives of years and years of tower climbing. Cheers to you Todd for the sheer volume of entertainment you provide me and all other armchair climbers.

What's with all the phallic symbols? I'm beginning to worry about some of you. ;-)

Great pix. The ones of Tasmania made me google Tasmania and climbing. There seems to be lots of rock on that island.

Uh, further research shows that the three species of snakes on Tasmania are all venomous, including the highly toxic Tiger and Copperhead snakes. I think I'll pass on climbing there.

There it is again, my snakephobia slithering out from under the rock.

You know, I think there are some good cliffs in Ireland to climb instead (including some sea stacks/towers) and I am headed for Dalkey Quarry now.

Hah, guess I got close on that. I do not know that spot specifically but I do own some land near the Zunis. There is an even better looking tower on the Ramah Navajo rez just off the road past El Morro.

My time spent in the small corners of NM finally paid off. I can now recognize all the flavors of New Mexican sandstone choss without any effort.

(You suck...)...YOu know your local choss;... that is proud......I'm impressed....I couldn't climb this when I visited., for , at the time, I was traveling with my girlfriend who and we had a small child with us, so we could only climb one pitch not-too-involved climbs......Is this near your home?

Todd, I was checking out Venus and Cleopatra about 20 years ago when we were overflown by a B-52 flying (it seemed) barely above the tops of the cliffs. It was flying at operational speed, like nearly the speed of sound, and man was it scary! Both my friend and myself threw ourselves on the ground. Turned out it was a closed, military airspace for practice runs. Jet noise! The sound of freedom! Take that you commie bastards!

Jaybro,

Yes, Chiricahua is right location for all little towers in my pics, except for Mace in Oak Creek Canyon, of course. Chiricahua is now off limits to climbing, I believe, but sure was fun in the day. Sometimes you wondered if some of the small base towers might just fall over as you got onto them. Note one has fallen over in left side of second pic!

A bit more detail and photo credits are at my website gallery:

North Six Shooter for you Todd. I think the tower you posted is near El Morro rather than El Malpais. I am just basing it on the look of the mesa in the background--I could be wrong though. There likely would not be that view over in the Narrows right by the Malpais. So your tower is safe for the moment, only for the moment though.

Thanks, cool photos, Tom, I spelled it funny because I knew it was off limits for climbing. I have camped and hiked there, a beautiful, fascinating place. Hollis Mariott ('The last Pioneer Women,' of the poor persons' guides to devils tower) was a seasonal ranger there a few winters. She has posted here, also.

Every time I see this fine thread, I think of Tower Peak in Northern Yosemite, so here it is. Hardly a tower compared to the others, but named as such. Tower Peak is in the back right, and the Saurian Crest is to the left. This 1990 picture is looking north from near the outlet of Tilden Lake. A very nice and remote place.
