The overrated musicians thread inspired this one. It's another way of stating overratedness....only with some perspective. I'm gonna start with:
Springsteen.

Actually, you know who else?
Billy @#$%ing Joel.
One decent song (You May Be Right) and one pop hit (Uptown Girl) but otherwise 20 albums of smelly rubbish. So help me if I ever have to hear Piano Man again. Except for in the Ringer where one of the Special Olympics competitors does his rendition. Priceless!

Damn...I don't even remember listing Journey. Sorry about that. I must've still had that glue-filled sock over my head. There was some great Journey prior to smelly Steve Perry showin' up...that huge-nosed dorkus. Then things were still somewhat decent until he got all the control.
Final Analysis:
List of things that would be fun to throw rocks at had they been sitting atop Delicate Arch -
1) Steve Perry
2) Birds
3) Any snack or object containing low-fast mayonnaise

Simple.

Donny-
I am not defending but merely stating that music reaches and connects to the masses by simplicity. Rhythm and blues works and is accepted by MANY ears due to a simple I IV V progression. Is Elvis the King? Many think so. Is Springstein the Boss? Many think so.
Less is more-

How many of you whiners are musicians? If you don't care for someones music don't listen to it. Barbara S and that Canadian Tw#t are exceptionally good singers, don't buy there CD's and most of you complainers couldn't afford to see them in person anyways.Music is a very personal issue with all musicians, hey I saw Eddie $ 25 years ago and he put on a great show. Nugent used to carry around a $10K bond in the 70's and offered it to any guitar player that could get on stage and show him up. No one could, Ted gets down on that 6 string and plays Blues penatonic riffs with a vengence even today. It seems like you guys like to bag on everyone and most of these musicians were doing the best they could at the time. If you don't like it, don't buy their music, but putting someone elses hard efforts down because you think it's cool to do so is wrong folks. Respect their efforts even if you personally don't like them they have achieved something. How the hell can anyone bag on Journey, Neil Shoen( spelling?) played with Santanna when he was 16 and is one of the most underrated Guitarist of that time frame, These cheesey threads are appalling, I wish LEB was posting so there was something more intelligent to read.

Timid: I guess you are saying all these posters have taste, but it is only found in their mouths?
My take on it is one man's meat is another man's poison.
FM radio, under the guise of "classic rock", took a bunch of music and played it over and over ad nauseam to the point that if you heard the song again you would scream. FM would also skip over the best music of some of these guys created (Steve Miller Band comes to mind).
Although I can definitely say there are plenty of bands or musicians I can't handle listening to (Styxx comes to mind, Dave Matthews another) they didn't become household names without having some talent.
Same goes for writers, some are great but I just can't read their works. People, including myself, rant and rave about some books and other people can't get past the first chapter.
I like the other music thread better, put up what you are listening to, if someone clicks on it and likes it fine. On the other hand if they don't like it they skip down to the next post.

I know it's all in good fun, but Skynard covered "the breeze" that JJ Cale. Check him out. Eric Clapton made a career out of that guy during the 70's. Cocaine, after midnight- JJ Cale songs.
Say what you will about Springsteen- Nebraska is one of the best albums of all time.
Eddie Money- hey what's not to like, the guy is who he is- nothing more, nothing less.

As far as I'm concerned, Eddie Money's first album is a classic, he has the classic rock voice. I love his cover of "You Really Got a Hold on Me", best version ever.
I remember when he used to be the host on that late night rock show Midnight Special. There were some great performances on that show. Classic groups of the day and a peek into the future when we saw The Cars. They may seem pretty normal nowadays, but back then, we didn't know what to think.

Real cheap on Amazon. Some of the reviews are brutal and hilarious. My copies are packed somewhere or I'd quote a few. When I dig them up, I'll bump this thread with some classic quotes.

Re: Springsteen
If this don't strike a chord, you've never been nowhere worth being:
Got out of prison back in '86 and I found a wife
Walked the clean and narrowJust tryin' to stay out and stay alive
Got a job at the rendering plant, it ain't gonna make me rich
In the darkness before dinner comes
Sometimes I can feel the itch
I got a cold mind to go tripping across that thin line
I'm sick of doin' straight time
My uncle's at the evenin' table, makes his living runnin' hot cars
Slips me a hundred dollar bill says
"Charlie you best remember who your friends are.
"Got a cold mind to go trippin' 'cross that thin line
I ain't makin' straight time
Eight years in it feels like you're gonna die
**But you get used to anything
Sooner or later it just becomes your life**
Kitchen floor in the evening tossin' my little babies high
Mary's smiling but she's watching me out of the corner of her eye
Seems you can't get any more than half free
I step out onto the front porch and suck the cold air deep inside of me
Got a cold mind to go trippin' 'cross that thin line
I'm sick of doin' straight time
In the basement huntin' gun and a hacksaw
Sip a beer and thirteen inches of barrel drop to the floor
Come home in the evening, can't get the smell from my hands
Lay my head down on the pillow
And go driftin' off into foreign lands

Sounds like Dr Sprock likes Wilco
I gave it a listen... do they have friends on the inside? How does one climb to prominence, in a sea filled with so many amazing musicians, with a pretty average sounding folk guitar getup that could be found at any high school or community college? Well maybe not any high school. It's not bad at all, but nothing that rings out as "nationally popular" type material from my perspective.
I'm not a hater, just surprised about what gets famous and what doesn't. I'd heard the name Wilco before but never listened to the music until just now.

I used to find many of the British pop bands pretty annoying: Oasis, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, and a bunch of others I can't be bothered to try to remember. Mind you, Eddie Money is a pretty low standard to be worse than, so it's a judgement call.
Wilco down there with E.M.? C'mon! That's ridiculous. Here's an old chestnut, performed not too long ago:

Ok...add Maroon 5 to this list...unless someone already has. Well...maybe just keep both references since they doubly suck.

Oh DAMN that ESS looks TASTY! Unfortunately all I have around right now is pumpkin banana bread.
Ok so what...sometimes respect for an ESS demands flexibility.

In high school back in Kansas the local Ramada Inn had house band that played in the penthouse bar. Their name says it all: Poppin Fresh...they did cover tunes by bands like Air Supply. Probablyshould add Air Supply to the list also.

Mmmm... I would totally mack on banana pumkin bread right now. As long as it was made with a wheat-free recipe. That reminds me, time to make some wheat-free zucchini bread.

I think Gluton is either a sub-atomic particle or the second language of Klingons from rural mountainous regions.
For me, I stopped wheat and a bunch of stuff I ate before because of near-ubiquitous ingredients that are now off-limits for me (onions, apples, honey, lactose, and many specific fruits and vegetables). A gastroenterologist at Kaiser put me on the FODMAP diet when they couldn't figure out what was causing chronic intestinal pain and gas. Colonoscopy was clean (thankfully). As a result of that diet, the intestinal pain is gone, gas is gone, psoriasis is almost gone (I am taking medicine for that though, hard to attribute dietary vs. pharmacological effects). I lost some weight too, my stomach muscles a little less obscured by insulation (but I was never fat enough as an adult to think about it). At first eating was a nightmare, but after adapting to it and figuring out comfort foods to deal with cravings (e.g. Trader Joe's wheat-free waffles and maple syrup), diet is fine. I mostly eat organic chicken and vegetable stir-fries for dinner, with different seasoning combos for variety. Interestingly, cheap ground turkey triggers a nasty smelling emission. Organic chicken is fine. If I ate out at restaurants or other people's houses, it would still be a dietary nightmare though. Luckily my lifestyle makes it no big deal.
But back on topic here, ESS. I'm going to confess that I actually hate egg salad in all of it's forms. And mayonnaise. But I love me some scrambled eggs fried up in butter. Alas I'm 40 and cholesterol caught up with me, so I scaled back from 2-3 eggs per day, now just eat egg whites about 2-4 eggs worth per week (mostly in Carbonara). Eggs for me used to be like coffee for some people. I just couldn't properly start a day without them. Now I hardly miss them.

I'll take Col "finger-pickin' good" Sanders over the Greatfulfckng Dead anyday. You can't really blame zombies for liking pop music because they've made no effort to get into anything else. And they're OK w/ it. But you got to go way, way down a dark road of insecurity and self hatred to convince yourself you like The Dead. Drugs do help the process, so do the wasted, twirling and uninhibited hippy chicks. but seriously.......

PLEASE TRY AND FIND ANOTHER MUSICAL ORGANIZATION THAT HAS FROM 1966 TILL LAST WEEK BEEN ABLE TO SELL OUT 10 TO 60 THOUSAND SEATS EVERY WEEK ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
and McDonalds sells a crapload of hamburgers everyday, starting in 1955, that does not make them good.

The sounds of every generation are rolled into the Dead experience.
so whether you want to bash the sound or the trip, you can not argue as The Fett, said, never a top 40 band but the juggernaut of all touring bands.
Going on tour was as near to traveling to different climbing areas as anything you can point to.
You're in very good company though mostly all those who don't get it resent that so many do. Going to a show was as much about getting entertained as it was about the peaceful gathering of a tribe.
In what world did you grow up?

OMG!!!!! I've always known with every fiber of my body that the Dead really really sucked... but now, if there was ever any doubt, that doubt has been removed. They are terrible, but not as terrible as the spin dancing zombie burnouts that follow the ultimate "sham band" around the country. What a waste of your time on this earth... I was totally blown away when I found out Trump was/is a supporter of this mess called the Dead.
Yuk! I'm still spitting on the ground after those clips.

I used to mock Phish because I assumed they had to be as crappy as The Dead...then I heard them and realized that Trey has 10X the talent of Jerry and 3x that of Bob.....and I'm not even a Phish fan, so this can only be an unbiased statement of fact.
