Thanks for the input. Four days out now, and it hurts like HELL! Criminy. Today has been the worst yet, and yeah, hiccups, coughing and sneezing aren't recommended. Even driving takes an amazing amount of torso strain, but not as much as putting on the shoes and socks. Breathing is going ok. Later...

rib muscles are thin and take a long while to heal (a month)
.....breathing is essential even though it hurts to breathe deeply....the rib muscles have to be used....don't just breathe shallowly....you need to breath virus germs out of your lungs all the time.
be very careful in any twisting movement; do some walking. no weight lifting until they are good.
I don't know about taping, but a doctors visit might be wise.

Over Thanksgiving break I was in Joshua Tree bouldering a short traverse. As I stepped over to the arete to finish the problem, I slipped, dodged the crashpad, and landed squarely on my side. It made even the stoic Platinum Rob grimace.
I couldn't climb for a week. It hurt to sneeze and laughing was out of the question. It sort of healed within a few weeks. When I went to Hueco in mid-December I could still feel it. Steep climbing was hard, espescially kicking my legs far to the side. By the time Christmas rolled around the rib was pretty solid and by January I was cranking like it hadn't happened.
The doctor told me there wasn't much he could do. They don't splint broken ribs. Go see the doc, make sure there isn't blood in your kidneys, and ask him for a lollipop, then hope you get cherry.

I'll chime in with my experience with broken ribs. I got taken out in a group ride. I broke 4 ribs and punctured my lung, I was in the hospital for five days, just enough for the lung to heal, and then home. My doctor told me the ribs will take 6-8 weeks to heal, and thats about how long it took for them to feel better.
Yeah, I would say you've broken some ribs if you can't sneeze, fart, laugh, sh#t, cough, or do any torso movement without some gnarly pain. The critical part is to do no new damage, don't go out and play and do something else. Because if you fall on that broken rib, it can be pushed into your lung, like I had the pleasure of experiencing.

Ribs are like any other bone, they heal faster when immobilized. So don't breathe for a few weeks, and it will heal faster.
Just kidding.
Don't bind your rib cage in an attempt to heal faster.

I should be good to go after 5 days of injuring my ribs
Don't bet on it.
The ones I broke 3 or 4 years ago are now causing me no end of grief after
having lain dormant the last 3 years. Pissy little phuks.

Moose,
I took a fall at work last week and shoved my hammer through my ribs. It sucks. Take it easy. I tried to keep working and now I need to take time off. They got worse.

I didn't break any ribs but did tear the intercostal tissue. Hurt like crazy! Even a good sniff would stop me in my tracks. Took months to fully recover. Patience.

A broken bone typically takes 4 to 6 weeks to heal. The surrounding soft tissue may take up to a month after that. Take your time.
