"I think my favorite Big Al story (I'm certain it's false but who cares) is that he started construction on a house out at Josh but drank away most of the loan money before they got the roof on the thing.

JL "

Funny story John, but sad to say untrue. He did indeed complete his house, and even found enough change in the couch to build a small studio next to it.

The first time I climbed with Al was in Tuolumne in about 1975 or 1976. We climbed Cryin' Time Again and some other stuff. I was super stoked to be climbing with Al as he had climbed El Cap a couple of times and was already a legend.

Dude, thanks for letting us crash at your place in Bishop for years!

I've done some great routes with Al: Blind Man's Bluff in Yosemite, South Six Shooter in Indian Creek, Jackson-Johnson on Hallett's.
Al, may your pro always hold and your leads be bold!

Never climbed with the guy but definitely climbed in a few of his footsteps in the HS and JT...

Cheers!

Thanks for the cool pics, Todd. #41, with the purple ropes,
that's about what Big looked like the morning after his 21st
birthday.

Al's the best! Member of Buff Mountaineers. Wonder if he has exceeded Beckey in first ascents?

Missed this one the first time around.....

When the Guide says: FA: Al Bartlett.....

It always makes me stop and think: "am I ready for this?"

and I make sure to tie the laces really tight and bring the A+ game...

And the man can cook up a fine meal on a one burner stove.

Respect
