I once forgot my sleeping bag on a climbing trip. The cold and generally sleepless nights in my not overly large backpack with all the clothes on I could scrounge have cured most of my stupidity regarding the truly important things. I at least pack before the last minute now.

In the modern world, if you make a mistake and get in a bind - if you don't have a local family, etc to bail you out - you're going to be ripped off, subject to price gouging and hardly can count on any help without the above (or any help at all); this is what necessitates high levels of preparedness.
In addition, I would not want to be stuck somewhere at -80 windchill or +100 having to make quick decisions and not having what I need to last for days, or be killed on the roadside: there's no room for mistakes sometimes.

You careless people are gonna die...you're only this way cause you know someone is always bailing you out like yer "wife" or whoever. It's like "we" or "my wife" in every post.
I remember meeting that guy who traveled alone trough all Americas without money or belongings... he was bumming and well, stealing. He was from a village in Andes though, very different from wealthy folks who post here....it's ridiculous to brag about own stupidity when you got big bank account and 10 family members to call for rescue.

My wife's counter measure of choice to combat my stupidity is the sticky note. This avoids confrontation yet is a constant assertion of her superior lucidity and my cognitive deterioration. There seems to be a concentration of notes left in my personal bathroom and around the toilet it particular.

Hey, David - zB's close, although I typically used winged elevators for gingival and periosteal flaps with our dental extractions.
Our Seldin elevator lives in one of our orthopedic surgery packs. With the burgeoning availability of referral veterinary specialists even in remote locations (say, coastal Maine!), we GP-types don't have to or get to do as much surgery or in-patient medicine anymore; thankfully I started just before this trend and had to manage our Addisonian and DKA crises, and do intestinal resections, liver lobectomies, and fracture repair, blah blah. Panicked the whole time, mind you.
Now it's just mostly fun.
The above was a little Chihuahua/min-pin cross with a fractured radius and ulna that one of my bosses conservatively (incorrectly) managed for the original owner. Both bones ended up with overlapping ends and fibrous adhesions but absolutely no stability, rendering that foreleg unusable. The owners were going to euth, so one of our techs took him, and we went to surgery, excavated extensively (Seldin and other tools) to yield healthy tissue at all 4 fracture ends, packed in a cancellous bone graft, and after some trial and error, placed a 4-pin, may have been 5?, external fixator (methyl methacrylate molded into a lateral bar). Would have been a good fit for a plate and screws but we've never had those, and the new owner couldn't have afforded the referral surgery.
If it hadn't worked, plan B was to lop the leg off, but he was young, liked his new hardware, was using the leg in less than two weeks and ended up healing really nicely. Win.

edit: and to the OP, my countermeasure to my own stupidity is to not propagate, so when Darwinism smacks me down, the gene pool will be a tiny bit strengthened, not weakened.

Funny thought to the original post about hide a keys. I always got one somewhere.
I was way up greasy creek during a cold snap in East Tennessee, ice was not thick enough to hold my truck, so I went Rambo on it with an axe to drive arcross. I was tired and kicking ice chunks out of the way, reached down and found a worn out hide a key box.
I laughed to myself about some dumbass lost theirs, then put it in my ignition. Haha it was mine!
