Hey y'all. Pretty bummed this place is shutting down. Kinda hoped to shared trips and stuff here when my newborn got old enough for me to start takin' 'em again.

Anyway, I started a subreddit called supertopo. I have zero interest or time for moderation, so if you wanna be a moderator PM me your reddit username and I'll add you. IMO Reddit is a better solution for an enduring supertopo-like community because of the costs, legal hassles, and motivation battles of running your own forum.

For you crusty old timers who don't know what Reddit is - it's just a bunch of communities like supertopo all on the same site. Each community has its own "subreddit." It's pretty easy to use.

I think reddit is an excellent site.
It could probably use a better name, one that doesn't use the word "supertopo".
Something more descriptive, like maybe /r/calclimbing .
The crux would be to recruit a core group of people who often post good material
(like, say, John Long, Vitaliy, and Jim Donini) and are committed to using it.
And Terrie's site has a "first mover" advantage in this regard.

As Clint suggested, C-Mac will definitely chop the bolts on that if you use the SuperTopo name, as I believe it is trademarked.

Count me in for Reddit though. I think that is the best landing pad for a site like this.

It would be interesting for the more computer savvy to weigh in on the pros and cons of reddit compared to freeforums.net.
I'd guess reddit may be a better way to go, but I'm not the expert.

As far as the trademark angle goes, it's certainly debatable if something like Supertopo Refugees (as opposed to Supertopo by itself) would infringe ST's legitimate trademark rights. But there's something to be said for being accommodating to reasonable requests regardless of legal rights, and Chris or RJ did say that these successor plans shouldn't use Supertopo. (Again in my view, that should have been more of a request than a legal threat, as I'm not at all sure the legal threat has much teeth, inasmuch as the proposed use of Supertopo in a name such as Supertopo Refugees seems to indicate that there isn't a business relationship, it would just identify a forum for people who used to like the ST forum, which will no longer exist.)

Yeah, the freeforum site is fine but kinda outdated - you can't post from a mobile phone very easily and it looks kinda janky. I just wanted to throw this out there as an option - I'm not super invested where people actually land. Here's the new subreddit! https://www.reddit.com/r/superbtopo

I started another thread for this reason to find where people are going as I value/enjoy what they post.

I believe "superbtopo" is still too close to "supertopo".
Maybe my suggestion of "calclimbing" is too confusing.
Unfortunately I don't have any better ideas at the moment.

Best to recruit a few key contributors and choose a name together,
then create it, add some posts and announce, I think.
Otherwise it looks like a "ghost town" and people won't join in.

It's like that scene in "13 going on 30" where nobody will go out on the
dance floor until the club owner pleads with Jennifer Garner's character to
get out there.

The structure of Terrie's categories looks good;
I am just concerned that the reddit has better software with upvoting to handle dealing with problem users.

Also, having a separate category for "current events" (i.e. politics) is helpful.
Of course there are such cateories already on reddit,
but I think Terrie's idea is that she would prefer to continue
discussions with former supertopo users that she already knows.

Real men go to Widefetish and Happie's sites.

Weak minded snowflake pussies who can't handle sh!t will end up at Reddit ...... :-)

Hamik:
Chris and I would appreciate it if you could create a bit more distance from our trademark. Perhaps "SuperTaco" as the name? That works for us, and yet still seems to be universally recognized.

That said, I appreciate you creating a start on Reddit which I noted on another thread seems to me to be an excellent candidate.

Regarding:
Kinda hoped to shared trips and stuff here when my newborn got old enough for me to start takin' 'em again.

We hope and expect that your newborn will still be able to see your TR on SuperTopo.com down the road.

Was created 7 hours by NegativeK, a climber, so I think others like this as well.
I made 3 posts to test linking to external URLs with photos and videos.

Some differences between the supertopo forum and reddit:

1. The thread index page has a little thumbnail photo left of each title, which is nice.

2. To view the comments on a thread that is a link to some external photo/video/page, you click on the 1 comment small text below the big thread title.
If you click on the thread title you will go to the external link instead and won't see the comment thread.

3. The thread index page can be sorted in various ways.
The default is "hot" which is a post count with more recent replies/comments weighted higher.

4. Replies/comments on a thread are "threaded", so your reply displays indented directly below the comment you replied to.
This is good for handling "thread drift".

5. Reddit does not have an equivalent to the old supertopo photo display, where you could display multiple photos along with text in a post.
You can display one linked photo and a title.
You can add more text by adding a comment below this.
So it's not good for making a photo trip report.
Usually when people want to present multiple photos and captions for each,
they do this on imgur.com, and then on reddit they post a link to the group of photos.

6. There is also no way to display a photo in a followup comment on the thread.
Similar to how supertopo changed recently, you can post a clickable text link, but no thumbnail is displayed.

Just one random guy's thought on the name: Supertaco does seem to get the point across, already has some traction, and has the OK from Supertopo management. It's the name I would choose.

I'm not a SuperTopo hero, but I've been on the bus as a mostly lurker since the wreck.

Ignoring the questionable vintage of his Handley Rock TR setups, is there really anyone more consistently authentic for climbing content than Clint?

I will at least read wherever he goes.

Good Question...

Real men go to Widefetish and Happie's sites.

"widefetish" aka smellyfish is a DJT funded fake news site, heavily censored. If you wish to imbibe with fools and losers, go there, if they'll let you. They're weak and dumb, but spew sh#t like pro's who love the taste and swallow it daily.

With comments like that Risk (miss you buddy and I hope we can connect sometime in the near future.) you'd fit right in there...nyuk nyuk
Butt, you're "observations" are spot on:-)
If you like to stir the hornets nest go over there and start jabbing. Mooseman is doing a pretty good job at it, butt then everyone loves a moose.

I'll follow Clint's lead as well.

ps Just to add, for those that aren't into the FB thing (thanks Micro for the efforts if you're still lurking) seems the Reddit or Happie's are better options for including everyone that gets the heebee jeebiees from FB....my $0.02

haha, thanks Dmurph.

Although I try to post accurate answers to questions,
I don't think the low volume or entertainment quality of my posts is much of a draw.
I'm more of a guidebook wannabe guy.

In my view, Vitaliy has provided by far the best content here in recent years.
Although he also posts TRs on his own blog and regularly posts photos on facebook.

Many other folks have contributed more/better TRs than mine.
Avery's work to bring together original photos and stories for the top mixed routes in the Canadian Rockies has been amazing and one of the best things on the site in the past several years.
PellucidWombat (and he makes better photo overlays than I do, too).

I realized early on, after reading a few of Jim Herson's and Greg Murphy's emailed trip reports, that they have amazing "stand up comic" quality and I never will.
Plus their climbs are so much cooler.

Then we have had Werner as the zen court jester.
I hope to read more of this thoughts in the future, where ever they are.
And of course read his amazingly clear recollections of climbing moments of the past and frank descriptions of the present.

I will try to keep up the beta photos on mountainproject, which is my particular interest.
And try to answer any questions wherever most people end up.
But I think the attraction of discussion / trip report forums is a different thing.
So I don't see myself being that big a contributor on reddit or on Terrie's forum.
