Contractor: I think the moderators did a fine job.
I'll demur.
There always needs to be leadership in a community, and it would fall to the administrators in instances like this. That's what administrators are supposed to do: they administer. Technicians set-up systems and monitor them. If leaders are not involved, then you'll be looking at chaos faster than you can spit.

The nature of the problem?
Was that Chris used the site to sell guidebooks, and doing gear reviews.
He has been a rather hands off owner, and rather disinterested in the operation of the site, until late.
Part of me thinks that Chris doesn't climb anymore, and just doesn't care about the site.

An example of a free site where the hardware and software work very well is reddit.
It also handles moderation, upvoting, banning, etc.
Apparently it works financially by having a few ads (sponsored topics) at the top of the index page; they seem to rotate every day.
For example:

Their categories may be a little too broad:

For the rest of us, that overhanging flared crack? Hell it looks easy from here. I’d say 5.3 at the hardest.
Maybe we should trust the folks who actually created the site to grade how hard it was. And please do let us know if you think we need to change the grade once you repeat it.

FWIW, I think Clint is right about Reddit being a very good candidate to consider.
Reddit is easy to use, works great on mobile as well as desktop and is bullet-proof in terms of scalability. In addition, they are sophisticated in terms of legal matters and moderation, and likely offer the best outlook for longevity. And, they are very well funded, and can be expected to continue to invest in innovations to assure they offer a best-in-class platform for discussion.
While I appreciate HappieGrrrl's Climber Taco Salad effort on Proboards free forum software, which seems pretty impressive, I am not confident that Proboards platform is going to be around for the long term, and I certainly don't feel Proboard's offering is competitive today with Reddit in terms of ease of use, scalability, or sophistication. With another fresh round of $300 million in the bank added just a few months ago, Reddit is very likely to significantly increase the gap between them and Proboard's Free Forum platform over the next 5 years.

I'm on the FBook group, and I like FBook for certain things. But this isn't one of them. I'm not sure that will have the long term legs to compare with ST.
Happie's site looks decent. But a good friend of mine ran the Utah Climbers forum. It's more work and cost than it looks.
I'd agree that Reddit would seem like the most obvious choice to me...it's pretty much already set up for this sort of thing. Then one just needs to establish the degree of anonymization and moderation desired.
Personally I'm all for real names...it would at least somewhat reduce the trolling. It's not as if this is a forum for political refugees that have a real need for their identities to be hidden.

I’ve never written on Reddit but I do read it everyday.
Reddit offers a lot of advanced options that many traditional forum users wouldn’t be aware of using ST .Reddit has a sophisticated system for pushing the best comments to the top and dealing with negativity and trolls. Posts are liked or disliked by the community and the gold rises . Reddit has karma points that promote content from inside each community. For a really excellent post, other members can even hand out gold coins. I don’t understand it all but a person would seem to work harder to be funny and interesting.
That said, what I think made ST so amazing was that right away it was a very real. Like a very large and talented family with a lot of psychiatric problems. We weren’t on our best behavior like we have to be with work, family or even at the crag. Many people used ST to vent off their worries, fears and concerns and work through life’s difficult moments. Other people/ climbers read this and they too joined in and were also real and so we ended up with Bachar talking about his failing arm and mortgage issues and Cosgrove stressing completely out when he thought a Gordon benefit he had nothing to do with, was being run by amateurs. It’s absolutely hilarious to me to run through some of these ST emotional dramas in my mind. That said, ST was also kind a very supportive with 100s of people jumping in on a member issue to offer support and solutions. And after a while, we knew each other and were friends in real life.
