Wow haven’t kept up on any of this but spent the last decade posting thousands of entries on the forum. Bums me out as most posts were very much climbing related and had pictures. Only did several tr’s but always felt that the forum is where ST SHINED. if anyone could save this stuff it would be great but I honestly don’t have the bandwidth at this point. I guess I will see you all later but will miss many of the threads myself and others created.

I was in the outdoor industry for years and have seen “potential litigation” used as a reason for terminating products and services several times when reasons, that went unstated, were much more the cause. Thus, when I see “potential litigation” being used, I get a beep from my bullshit detector.

Donini:

I'm not sure what kind of conspiracy theory you have in mind, Donini, but I think Chris and I have been quite transparent about what is going on, with the exception of holding back details of the current legal case we're dealing with.

It just isn't that complex.
The Forum has been losing money for years.
It takes a lot of time.
We were OK with that until we were recently threatened with a lawsuit related to copyright infringement stemming from user-uploaded images.

That has changed the calculus for us, as we now need to consider not just the costs in time and money to run the Forum that we've incurred every year for the past 18 years, but the prospect of a much deeper investment in time and money due to potential litigation in the future (like the case we're currently wrestling with).

Your comment implying that Chris is a bullshitter suggests you think our reasons for shutting down the Forum just don't make sense. That you believe that no reasonable person would walk away from an 18-year long money-losing venture simply because the future money-losing costs might be dramatically higher than the past money-losing costs.

You have the right to your opinion. And, if it helps you to imagine some grand corporate conspiracy, some dark hand on the tiller, that is nefariously leading to the shut down of the Forum for mysterious dark reasons, then have fun with it.

But, forgive me for finding it more than a little bit offensive for you to accuse Chris and me of being bullshitters after all the time we've spent over the last 18-years keeping this Forum running. We made a big investment in creating and running the Forum, and it is both a surprise and saddens us for it to come to an end. We hope that a new site will take up the slack and provide an even better experience for this community over the next 18 years.

RJ,
Don't take a little salt from a ST regular too personally, that's kind of the way ST works, as I imagine you know!

Thanks to you and Chris for providing this forum for many years.

You guys didn't do everything the way I would have liked, but so what, you make something happen, and everyone can be a critic.

Well, if there's one thing that always grows legs in this place, it's conspiracy theories and speculation. Even when facts are presented, they seem to get spun into some bizarre direction.

RJ, will we still be able to access our own pictures in the photo section? I know....how can this person not know the answer to that question...but I don't.

Thanks again for it all. As Bridwell once told me, metaphorically speaking of course, thanks for the good doss. Which, I guess either means a home for someone without one. (Me when I got to this place.) A heart home not a brick one. Or, a joint, I'm not sure which he meant at the time. Smiles, lynnie

Lynne:

Photos that are included in your Trip Reports will remain on those Trip Reports as they are today. However, photos that appear only on Forum posts will be removed from our server.

So, before June 1st, do please take a moment to download and backup any photos that you have on SuperTopo if you do not have originals on your computer.

This should not impact most people since I think most people will have their original photos stored on their computer and/or at some photo storage site (and likely at a higher resolution than we keep on SuperTopo). But, should you not have an original, and the copy on SuperTopo is the only one you have access to, then please download a copy before June 1st.

RJ, is there a specific time that the Forum will shut down on June 1?

Edit: Thanks for that, RJ.

Donini’s bullshit detector obviously needs to be recalibrated, or it needs a new set of batteries.

Hey all, and RJ/Chris,

don't forget Donini has been one of your very most rock solid contributors on this site, as to keeping the climbing content real, taking un-told amounts of time to write up reports and share with us beauty from all around the world. He has always brought extremes back to the middle and basically, well, kept things real for you and for all of us.

He never once lost his character here, name calling, mean spirited or other shenanigans I would call bullsh#t. He may toot his horn a little now and then but that's usually to challenge the rest of us arm chair climbers to get off the political topics and get out there climbing. I wouldn't be too harsh on him as he definitely kept the better character of this place going for so many years.

Arne

edit-you know people are just a little pissed. You created a platform but it was guys like Donini (and many others) who made it really happen for so many others, year after year.

All so very true, but I can understand RJ & Chris's frustration with a lot of this.

They've endured years of bullshit over the years related to this Forum. It's understandable they'd be offended by anything that resembles an assumption they don't care about this enough to work at it.

Agree with the last comment. I am a moderator on a bicycling forum when I'm not lurking here. It's tough work to keep a few people in line, and if you're losing money with the potential to lose more and spend way more time. Pull the ripcord.

Thanks for all you guys have done.

no need to be shy about a sense of equity in this forum. it was OUR content and community of characters that filled empty pages. for the spirit of authorship, book burnings can get a little raw

RJ, Look....first, don’t accuse me of having a conspiracy theory....that is in the realm of an ad hominen argument..I just stated that in my long experience in the outdoor industry I have seen “potential litigation” used as a smokescreen on several occasions. I am not accusing you of it but it does make me pause. You certainly did react to my statement.

I thank you for establishing and maintaining an excellent forum but that doesn’t mean I wont express something that gives me slight unease.
