Just for fun and possibly of historical interest, here are some photos of mostly climbers. Can you identify them?

I don't think that's Michael Covington in the center of photo #12... I knew him in Estes Park in the 1970s, and he was a LOT skinnier than the guy in the photo. Mike Covington is a very nice guy... he gave me nothing but encouragement when I was a beginner. I remember him telling me that "5.7 in the mountains can be hard" after some adventure I'd had on Hallett Peak or Longs Peak. And he did work at Steve Komito's shop in Estes Park, and ran Fantasy Ridge (a guiding service and climbing school) at that location as well, back in the 1970s. I think he lives in Telluride or Durango now, though I haven't seen him in decades.

That was a heady time in Estes Park. Jim Dunn was around, and Earl Wiggins, and John Sherwood, and Beth Bennett and Molly Higgins and Larry Bruce and Jim Michael and many others It wasn't always easy to convince Eldorado climbers that the hike up to the crag was worth it, but it was kinda my thing... cragging in the high country, where the approach is part of why you earn your pizza or whatever at the end of the day!

For photo number 2 I remember Boodawg telling a story about climbing the sentinel and meeting Kim Shmitz and maybe Schacer (sp) on top.

Boodawg would know

Photo #2: It’s hardly fair for me to answer since I am in the picture. I always meant to post this TR, but a search of ST doesn’t show it, nor does a search of “ST GOLD 2.2 Areas and Routes.” In fact, Sentinel Rock isn’t even mentioned there. But I did post a TR here: http://yosemitecloseup.com/first-ascent-psychedelic-wall-sentinel-rock/

Photo #3, L to R: Bud (Ivan) Couch, Tom Higgins, Russ McLean

Photo #5, Left is John Hansen

Photo #6: Left is Jeff Dozier (Dr. Deeg) Right kinda looks like Guido…

Photo #7: Wild Guess: RR on Dawn Wall

Photo #8: On the FA of the Totem Pole, one of the team had to piss so badly that he did it on the top; thus, the small, yellow puddle in front of Powell’s face… LOL!

Photo #11: L is Russ McLean, Center is Joe Faint; Right is ??

Photo #13: Hint: Prelude to the 3rd ascent of the Leaning Tower!

Photo # 14: Far back: RR?; next to him, dishing food: Tom Frost? Sitting to the left of Blue Blouse Beauty, is that Yvon?

Guido’s picture #1: Even tho I wasn’t there at the Teton Chuck Pratt Memorial (unfortunately!), First row, L > R: Doug Robinson, #2-?; #3 - Don Lauria; #4 (White hat & camera) - Guido; #5 (White hat, dark glasses): ??; #6 (with beer): Joe Fitschen; #7 (White hat, arms folded): Jeff Foott.

Guido’s #2: This pic appears, momentarily, in the “Valley Uprising” film. Hint: Geographically, tho not contemporaneously, the previous pic and this one were taken fairly close to one another…

Hey you guys... Correction:

pic #11 has Jim Harper Joe Faint and his date... Not yours truly, R. McLean

Pis #3 is on the summit of Tahquitz Rock in 1962; we were heady and swimming in pride having just climbed the White Maiden's Walkaway. Our third and successful attempt.

pic #13 is Boche and Kor

Hey, ya it's me again... Photo #14: standing at the head of the table is Royal and Tom and sitting there at the table drinking a beverage, could that be Fritz Wiessner? He did pay So. Cal. a visit way back, and this picture is from way back... Every one looks pretty young... No? And that may very well be Roger McDivit head slightly turned and Krissy next to him?

Great fun indeed Don, thanks for sharing. I’ve got one of you or I should say your back....mid seventies at Tahquitz climbing with Sue Condon:

Here’s one taken from the Open Book of Mark Powell climbing the Mechanic’s route:

Wish I had taken a lot more pictures of people, the rocks are still here.
