Amazing hearing Ron talk. What a history lesson! Watching that younger guy bouldering was cool too. TYFPU!

Nicely done video and interview.

I watched a person do it, standing amongst a few other guys working on the problem. I was doing nothing more than rubbing my chin in a series of thoughts centered on the learning curve involved, the courage and confidence in attempting to master the moves to top out.

That was the summer of 1978, my first in the valley, as a 21 yr old, with four or five climbs (as a belay monkey) under my swami belt. Of course the vain dreams of accomplishing all of the above swirled around in my head every time I bouldered after that. It was a long learning curve for me and the confidence part was the most difficult, despite a lot of encouragement and tutelage from some great guys.

Kind of fun looking back now remembering all of that. I never got farther than the dream and possibly a half hearted attempt at the problem.

That was really cool! Thanks for posting. I've always really liked Ron, and it was fun to see him relating to people in the same way I always remember him--fully present, and encouraging.

Classic video DH! Oval 'biners clipped to each other, rigid friends, hip belay and Ron in a swami! Rick Ridgeway appeared so stressed belaying compared to Ron who floated it even when rockfall hit one of his half ropes and pulled him off (good that he was using 2 ropes!). Amazing exposure and Ron was totally relaxed and focused.

Very nice.

Many folks here lament the passing of their youth and physical capabilities, but I think you can see the insight of reflection in Kauk's musings. At some point, he says that one can't really see one's current situation (and oneself) until one is quite a bit down the road afterwards. IMO, in this video you might see Kauk writing or re-writing history and character of himself and others of those times. My point here, is that we may lament the passing of our youth and adulthood, but with that passing and late maturity may come wisdom and understanding of what we are.

Again, a very enjoyable video. TFPU.

Here's another one from that TV series, with Sarah Purcell as host! If you love the 80s, you'll love this. Hugh's now a MIT professor in biomechatronics or something like that.

^^^ Yes. Forty years ago. Of course Sherman's V-scale didn't exist then.

Nice video and good narration by one of the best back then.

That is a real gem of an interview. TFPTU

Ron is a really nice guy. It’s great to talk to a legend. I reminded him that I saw him at Mt Woodson many years ago getting ready for the contest being lead around by Rick Pickett and getting s nice intro to Woodson. Ron won the contest and got a new climbing rope.

I asked Ron after seeing his talk in Yosemite Valley on The Spirit of the Rock, if he was still able to jump on Midnight Lightning and do it, and he said that kinda of climbing requires real commitment and dedication. I understood. Time changes us. We get older.

Who is the oldest to send Midnight Lightning?

I found this really great gem with the Verm, a film in production it looks like ...
