Hi all--
I'll be visiting Yosemite next week with 3 friends (for the first time, so stoked!) and we want to boulder one of the days we're there, probably Thursday the 25th. Does anyone have any suggestions about where we can get 2 crash pads? I know that Yosemite Mountaineering School rents them, but they don't accept reservations, and I'd rather not chance it.

Is there anywhere close to the Valley that we could grab a couple? Or could I borrow from anyone? We'll be staying in Groveland. Ideally we're just renting them for the day, not over a few days. I'd appreciate any suggestions, thanks!

Am I doing it right?
You're committing the same violation as Fritz.

The Supertopo layout and trademark is not yours, nor is Apple's in the background. Please delete asap before the copy-pocalypse comes to wipe out RJ and CM's entire personal net worth.

Hi there SusieB. Just ignore the above posts. These guys are making some inside jokes about how the forum is being run and how photos are being copyrighted and uploaded. Neither of them answer your questions but Supertopo is in an uproar right now with some photo issues! To answer your question, I doubt you'll find anything in that direction. Borrowing from somebody in camp 4 would be a good bet. Just wander around and ask folks if you see a couple laying around a site. Chances are they'd let you if they aren't going to be using them that day. I'd let you borrow mine but I live in Fresno and am in the wrong direction.

For what it's worth....I've bouldered off and on in the valley for 20 years and have only once taken a crash pad. Seriously. There is so much great bouldering, just go and find stuff and downclimb rather than jump. If you peel, you peel. Land lightly. Have a blast and don't let not having a pad deter you from all that good stone!

Yep. Me too. I don't own one and never will. If it's a short visit you can sample stuff within your abilities. If you were going to push your limits and do highballs and stuff you might need one. They are optional.

I think I may have told this story before but we went to the valley for a long road trip and we didn't have a crash pad nor did we need one as micronut points out.

I remember trying the cocaine corner along with this Japanese guy. He was almost at the top and slipped and skittered all the way down and hit the ground and tumbled backward and got up and we both smiled. No need to speak. It was a soft landing.

Point is there are plenty of boulders you do not need a crash pad. And likely the ones you want one there will be several in place already.

All you need is a towel to wipe the dust and dirt off your shoes.

The ground itself is a crash pad ....

Thanks for the info, y’all! I think we’ll give a shot to making friends in camp 4, and maybe some pad-free climbing. Cheers!

^^^I don't think we were doing it correctly as neither of us "summited". I don't remember if there was a mattress but I know we didn't have our own pads. I was probably stoned too.

If you're going to be staying in C4 there's a good probability that you'll find a CP there. Plenty of Boulder's use crashpads in the Valley, you'll not have an issue either borrowing or renting one for the day. Enjoy Yosemite. . .df
