hey there, say, all...

please, can someone help...

friend has called over and over to THE verizon tech coach, four times today, (they all say they will call her back) they NEVER call her back...

*she has had issues before, but never THIS ONE, there, that
i will tell you about:

okay, so-- she had JUST done a 'backup'
(because something from apple, keeps telling her to back up-- it had not been backed up for two weeks, and it said she needed secure/connect to wifi, locked, etc, etc)

she has no clue what all that is...

well, back to SITUATION-- so she DID the back up...
and, then..

now, whenever she calls (OR SOMEONE calls her):

she hears weird 'devil-ish robot voice echos' -->(her description)
*meaning distortions of our voices, and--
we, hearing her, this was, and EVEN, hearing our OWN voices, this way, too...

example:

when i called her, i heard one sentence from her,
then--
i heard my OWN voice repeat the LAST TWO words that i had just LASTLY said, -->over and over, at least 6 time, before i just HUNG up...

she called me back...

she said this was happening NOW in last few phone calls, and had been happening ALL day to her, after the update...

she wants to know, what this is, or, why:
these echoey robot voices, distortions, echoes... micro-wave type noise...
and, repetitions of 'same words' over and over,
but:

not in our recognizable-voices-- but-- an echo distortion, machine-like...

and-- no one will call her back to help her, as they say...

recently, when she DID get through to someone, well,
they tell her they want to restore it back to factory reset, which
she does not want... as, it would wipe out 'everything' ...

(not sure what that means, as, i do not have phones) ...

so, please, can someone help her, here...

she is a taco-associated gal, and will come read...
(just, she stays in the background, more) ...

thanks guys, you've helped me so very very much...

ps:
post your answer, as, i said-- she will read here...
i can relay any more bits-and-pieces, etc...
if you need to know them...

(will be back on line, in a few hours)...
thanks guys! :)
happy good eve...

edit:
this is her FOURTH I 7, in LESS than a year...
and--

they keep wanting her to go to claims dept, so she can SPEND MORE MONEY,
and they can send you ANOTHER phone of the SAME kind,
which you do not want, due to having to spend MORE money...

she should not have to spend another cent, she said as, this is her fourth phone, and none have worked... she feels she should be let out of the contract, instead of being told to buy a NEW more expensive one, now...

the frustrations for her, too, is never having a person to talk to, to get real help from...

Wow !? I will say that I have been getting a notice that my phone is not backed up
&
to achieve back up it needs to be ? Shut off & charged 24 hours

I do that but It still gives me a ~Not Backed Up Notice~, with the repeat of the instructions.

“Devilish robot echoes” is an interesting description for the probable root cause of crappy cell coverage.

Our voice is encoded in a compressed way to use less bandwidth, and chopped up into very small packets when it is transmitted. Imagine the words you say in a sentence like a big cargo ship of goods, and to get to the destination it is all loaded into separate train cars or 18-wheeler trucks. Now imagine that all the trucks and train cars need to arrive at a certain place by a certain time or they are thrown away (like a cargo of fruit that spoils).

The voice encoding works like that. If some of the packets don’t arrive in time, the device on the receiving side says “screw it, I’m playing out the audio now and if some of the packets are missing I’ll do my best to fake it.” When too many packets are lost or late, the device can’t do a good job of faking it and it sounds like that devilish robot. The same thing can also be related to a Bluetooth headset if it is running out of batteries or too far from the device.

As for the echoes: whoever hears their own signal bouncing back, it’s because there is a problem on the far end. The signal gets to the receiver, and because of a slight mismatch in electronics (“impedance”) or because the sound from the headphones is leaking back to the sound in the microphone, it goes back to the originating side.

Phones these days are smart enough to block this feedback of audio from speaker to microphone, unless both sides are talking at the same time or there is a lot of background noise on the listening side.

Doesn’t sound like a problem with the phone itself. Doesn’t hurt to ask a technician with the service provider, but don’t pay anything to fix it or get a new phone unless you have a side-by-side proof that another device sounds clean while the old one sounds messed up.

A1)Find out what version of iOS she is using.

2) Have her look in SETTINGS>GENERAL>ABOUT

It will tell you the latest version and if you should update. ( the latest is 12.2) If it tells you to update, plug into power and do that. That may actually be what the software is asking her to do, and not an actual memory backup.
https://support.apple.com/ios/update

ABOUT will also tell you the memory capacity and what is still available.

If available is below 10% of capacity she needs to remove apps, movies, photos, etc to get more memory. 14-20 gigabytes available is about the minimum a machine will run well with.

Backing up to the cloud will put apps, photo, etc on the cloud to free up memory, but you need to set up iCloud to do that. Apps are stored on the cloud and downloaded to the phone as needed.

Backing up to another machine won’t do that. But at least you will have your stuff on another machine.

Look at this from Apple support.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203800

Note an update is the recommended fix. The phone will reset after update.
And note it does tell you to try turning off Bluetooth to see if that helps. That also may be available memory related.

hey there say...

new UPDATE now...

she just said this happened:

now--something with the settings I'm thinking because all of a sudden I can't hear people calling and they can't hear me AND my speaker icon on my phone isn't working and my voice mail isn't working and the voice prompt isn't working so it's something with the speaker or something is turned off who knows

is this connected to the OTHER trouble, or now...?
(sounds like it is different, now, as another trouble?)

well, got to go...
will check back, to see what folks can
figure, tomorrow...

thanks again, so very much...

Make sure the volume is turned up. Make sure it isn’t on mute.

Does this issue come up on WiFi or on her cell service or both?

If that doesn’t work, try :

A full restart, which on most machines involves holding the on-off button and the Home button down until the machine goes dark and then the apple logo appears. That takes a minute or two. Then it will take another minute or two to boot up.

If that doesn’t work try:

“Reset all Settings iPhone,” which will keep your personal data and your apps but will reset network settings and personal preferences.
It will reset the phone preferences back to the way it was when new.

She will have to re-enter all WiFi passwords. Hope she remembers what they are.

DONT do “erase al content and settings” unless you want to lose everything.
https://smallbusiness.chron.com/happens-reset-iphone-48640.html

If none of those work and she doesn’t have gum on the speaker or something, it’s time to cash in apple care.

She does have Apple Care, right?

Either way, take it to an Apple store. A genius might be able to help. Usually the first try is free.

neebee,

just a couple of comments

as others have said, your friend needs to learn to go to settings and learn how to check for updates and download them, check every week

I shut my Iphone off and turn it back on every day, this reboot does a diagnostic self check

there are two ways to back up, one is with a cord between the phone and a computer with ITunes, this needs to be updates and is trick to do

or you can back up to Icloud, phone fairly charged, on wifi, go to settings, etc
just google how to back up to Icloud from my Iphone and follow the steps

With iOS 12+ You can set the machine to automatically update and reset at night while you charge.

hey there, say, Norton, and everyone that has been so very kind...

say, she went back again, (long trip for her, from her town, to the service store) ... and since the phone had fully crashed...

she could not try any of these things, here... :(

well, the guy 'insisted' that he knew what was wrong, and did a 'something or other' (i did not retain well, what she said) and then, HE also
put a new sim card in it...

he was READY to send her out the door, when she realized the thing was not working (speakers, or something) ?
after he had JUST told her it was fine...

so this happened FIRST...

1--when she went into the store, they were going to keep it and send it back through the mail?? after they 'fixed' it...
but, she said NO-- she's been without phone, and did not TRUST them, due to past issues... (SOME of this first paragraph, i am not sure if repeated all this exactly-- it really is very complex, from all the various stories and situations that she has had, and related to me, over the months...

*that's why i decided to COME TO YOU GUYS...
YOU ARE A GREAT resource for so many things and help!
thank you... so,
here goes the rest:

THEN--
2--so then, they got on the phone with some 'insurance??' thing (not sure what that was)...

3--they talked, etc...

4--then the guy went back to 'look around' and said, he actually HAD a new phone for her...

5--then proceeded to tell her this very pricey PRICE that she now owed them...

6--then, she 'whoaaaa'ed him and said forget it...
and, that she owed them nothing and that she felt after FOUR failed tries and (i think??? an exchange, that she also had to pay for? a ways back) all the failed help, over this, that she'd not go for that...

7--she was actually not leaving the store until they fixed it...

8-more talks to the 'whoever' and...

9-she left the store with a NEW!!! phone, :O MAN OH MAN, :o
after months and months of troubles...

10--then, it seems the guy admitted that something must be wrong with it, but, i am not sure?? if it was resolved, as to what it was???

BUT, THIS is still a great help... if something comes up again,
the answers here, can help, or, at least keep things in order for her...

LIKE IF SHE ever has to backup, update, etc...

thank you all, with all my heart...

FWIW, I've got a Tracfone Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro... Bought it for ~100$ at Best Buy a couple years ago. I put about $200 worth of data/texts on it a year.

It does everything any Android phone can do and if it breaks or gets smashed I'll simply buy another.

That’s great to know, fear.

Will it update my iCal calendars automatically with my other 6 iOS and macOS machines?

Ditto my contact lists.

Ditto my iBook and Video and music content purchases.

No idea.... I never bought into the overpriced and overhyped Apple BS.... beyond my 1978 Apple II +.....

The android world sure seems a lot cheaper and simpler...
