I am surprised the govt would want to risk shutting it down. It has become such a cash cow that local law enforcement, BLM, Health and Food Safety, etc probably depend on the revenue.

FWIW I regret not going a long time ago when it was smaller. I had many friends, climbers and normals, who waxed poetic about it in the late 90s. Many of them still love it in spite of the demographic shift. so I guess it's me who's missing out.

I went 9 times from 2005-2015. Some of my buddies started in 96 or 97.
We are now into BM version 3. I caught BM vers 2 and the transition into BM3.
Like climbing it was more fun before it went mainstream. Now it is too big for my taste

I always thought it was free- Well, i looked it up and it definitely aint. Easy choice though: One month road trip fishing in Idaho or a weekend at BM with 10,000 of my new best friends

I went in ‘99, 2000, & ‘04. It was a blast, thought provoking the whole deal. My first ticket cost $65. There are more people there now in any given year than all of my trips put together. And the cost is astronomical.
I’m sure that anyone who goes now will still see things that they have never seen before, do things they’ve never done before, get their mind blown, etc.
but yeah I’ve moved on, you can go to China cheaper, there’s just other things I want to do more.

It is still an amazing event full of magic, beauty, fun, inspiration, and human expression.
It will indeed be a huge loss if it goes away.
I wish some of you crusty old armchair climbers could come experience it.

I'm not into the crowds any more (but I was among 600,000 at Watkin's Glen in '73).
When I want beer and bangers I can just go to Vegas, but,....... are we talking about the same thing?

Burning Man Readies for War with the Federal Government
The annual festival, roughly 100 miles outside of Reno, has locked horns with the Bureau of Land Management over environmental proposals, including, of all things, a big concrete wall.

The Nevada division of the Bureau of Land Management (B.L.M.) manages and protects the Black Rock Desert Wilderness, public land on which Burning Man is held every year—specifically on the dried-up lake bed referred to as “the playa.” After the organizers filed their request for a 10-year permit, the B.L.M. responded in March with the requisite Draft Environmental Impact Statement: nearly 400 pages split into two volumes that attempt to assess the environmental impact of the growing festival—from air quality, to light pollution, to weeds, to the safety of migratory birds, to trash build-up—and propose a number of potential solutions.
One suggestion—and a major focal point of contention for reasons that will be immediately clear—is a 9.5-mile concrete wall around the perimeter. The B.L.M. stated in the proposal it will prevent vehicles from going through it, and have said that it will block trash from escaping. The Burners argue that it’s “logistically onerous, environmentally irresponsible, unnecessarily redundant, [and] prohibitively expensive.” The proposed trash wall would replace a trash fence that currently exists, a fence that Burners contend already gets the job done.
Other B.L.M. proposals include an increase in car searches, adding dumpsters and trash cans around the camps and along the one road into the event, and requiring the Burning Man organization to hire more security. The event’s organizers have estimated that, all told, the measures would put a nearly $20 million burden on the festival, which they say will force them to raise ticket prices $286 over the current price—awkward for an event that relies on the currency of gifting while on the playa.
A DEIS is a pretty standard expectation for any significant use of a public lands resource. This doesn't seem like an unreasonable expectation for an event of this scale and magnitude.
This 'wall' has pretty bad optics, but the fact that any kind of barrier has been constructed on a yearly basis by BM attests to the fact that blowing trash is a problem. I doubt that a 'wall' is the best solution, but this is most definitely a problem.
Dumpsters seem to be a very reasonable expectation. BM doesn't like the aesthetics? I'm sure there are some very skilled, artistic people out there who could dress them up in creative ways.
