Both of my sons are leaving for college soon. Curious for insights on what it's like to live in Mariposa. I'm retired by my wife teaches elementary school (bilingual spanish). Appreciate any insights. I can see some affordable homes (compared to Santa Cruz). I know it's about an hour from the park's valley floor. Looks like a nice little community but I've always just blown through town on my way to the valley floor or higher environs. Does AT&T work or do locals use Verizon? Monthly trips to Merced Costco? Is Gas more expensive? Friendly community? Local Brew Pubs? I know it's blazing hot in the summers and can get chilly in the winters.

Thanks,

I have two friends who live there. they enjoy the peace, quiet and relative affordability of housing. They like extra space, gardening, horses and hiking. Last few summers have been marred by huge wild fires that affected the air quality for several weeks at a time. You might try renting for awhile.

Following this, and wondering how an lgbqt couple would fit in. I can be all rednecky but don’t really want to. I like watching the rifleman though.

I thought about moving to Mariposa a year ago, I even spent a couple days having real estate agents showing me houses there.

I am sure one of those ladies was packing a gun,,, That's just Mariposa
I don't blame them.

Boo dog and Guido are the liberals in town, but when I went into the Pioneer Market there was nothing other than white faces.

I was kind of surprised.. not a minority anywhere

Like Boo dog I lived in Hawaii for a long time. and I feel right at home in Watsonville where most every one has darker skin.

Also , for miles and miles around Mariposa there are dead trees waiting to burn. Really grim..

I would like to hear the perspective of Guido and Ken Boche and their thoughts on the town of Mariposa, as they have both recently built houses and settled in around there. I know they have tried to build there houses to be fire proof.

I grew up in Auburn

, a typical redneck foothill town.

But after living with such diversity on the Big Island for 30 years I think I will stay here for a while.

I'm no resident. I've known the town and some of the residents since '61 and it does appeal to me, but I'd rather live out of town on 49 in the direction of Oakhurst, say Bootjack to Ahwahnee.

It's not a place a person of color wants to live in. I wouldn't want to move there if my family was ethnic...too much Make America Great Again (Make Amerika White Again) sentiment in the foothills, generally. Third and fourth gen ranchers and landowners will not give up their past, their guns, or their party. Yet how many jobs begin with Federal money and contribute to the county's economy? Seems weird that the bogeyman is the Federal gov't to a lot of State of Jefferson types, who hate centralized leadership, yet much of the county's income is from NPS/USFS. It see-e-eems, too, that every other place along country roads (and they're ALL country roads) has a flag at the gate or in the yard.

I don't know about AT&T/Verizon availability. I can tell you that in the sixties, when the family came to Merced, the telephone company up there was a small, local one, independent of Ma Bell. The whole Mother Lode is now on cells and the land lines numbers there are likely shrinking again. I checked wireless connectivity in Jamestown last summer when staying there, but you have to invest in a permanent installation, blah blah blah.

Those hellish hot days in the summer, though--you either get used to it or spend $$ on AC. A ploy is to live at an elevation above Mariposa but until you get to 4,000' there is no real difference in the heat.

In addition to Costco there is a Target and a Walmart, too, and a Smart & Final here in Merced.

There is the Gold Coin, a tourist trap on 49 in town and there is the Airport Inn out in Bullion (Clampers hang).

All the best in deciding what's coming in your future.

All things considered, I'd like Bishop much better.

That's not being a dick , it's great info & why I ended up on the eastside. You can usually fix your property, but you usually can't fix much off your property.

Who are you calling Mariposa? LGBT couple? Don't you have to pick? Just kidding. What ever happened to Q? I vote for Q. We can all be Q.

Also, I can build a fire proof house. But nobody cares

Also, I can see how Lucas McCain might put the lgbt on some folk. He was a nice dresser and living a healthy manly life.

I'd imagine that you'd get some heteronormative attempts at humor that are independent of your sensibilities. But you might like it. Being that America is Great Again. And all

Hey Frummy, don't forget the eastside can have some nasty fires too. They lost 39 homes in Swall Meadows in 2015.

How about the Tollhouse, Auberry, Shaver Lake area instead? About the same elevation, close to Courtright, a nice climbing area. Lee Vining itself is Meh. But it is so close to Tuolumne!! Also go up and explore HWY 108; Sonora, Colombia, Twain Harte, Pinecrest, might find something you like.

^^^ That’s where I’m going to poke around. Sutter Creek is nice but expensive. DMT has good advice and MFM.. It’s always interesting here when people ask advice on places to live. Funny stuff flip:)

Great information everyone. Thanks so much. It makes me realize how much of a Santa Cruz bubble I live in. As i mentioned, my wife is a bilingual spanish teacher so I imagine there's not much of a market for that up there. I'm generally familiar with the Highway area of Sonora/Twain Harte/Dodge Ridge having grown up in Modesto. And I'm mindful of the risk of wild fires for any location along the foothills/Sierra Nevada mountains. Thanks again everyone.

i had a house on mariposa since 2002, but have never actulally lived there. i live in oakland. two years go we bought another house in a defensible zone and sold the other one that is a paradise waiting to happen . feel a lot more secure about the imminent wildfires. our property is all oaks now with just a couple of bullpines...no dead ponderosa pines ready to go up in flames like our old place. so, don't buy in a big fire zone they don't even want to insure you nowadays. ss
