Kinda funny, just watched it, sent John a message. Classic Bridwell...”can you get me a cigarette? Thanks Layton”.

"I'm not a slave to public opinion."

Understatement of understatements.

Tough to see Jim in his then-deteriorated physical condition, but he was as mentally sharp as ever, it seemed to me.

Thanks for the fine job of editing, whoever's responsible.

John Long put this together. I got some great stories of that trip over the years.

Then big thanks, Large John.🐭

Another of Bridwell's recollections about this milestone in alpinism.

Thank you Largo. Just meeting someone on the spot to do something like that is considered too risky for most---makes me smile---I ain't scared of nothing. Ha ha, those were the days.

That was so awesome. Thanks Largo and Ted for this historic interview. I agree this was probably his proudest ascent. Bad ass bold! Connecting with Steve was serendipitous. I had the privilege to meet him at a Woodson gathering and later events. Enjoyed talking smack from Yosemite to Urantia. I even ribbed him once about 'the chopped holds,' and he said, 'Which ones?' LOL! Gotta love how honest he was.

Thx Guys for capturing that discussion.

Jim’s acknowledgment to Maestres attempt and position on the wall is respectful and conciliatory, and yet also he’s proud to have gotten the prize proper.

“Balls to the wall!”

Anyone can post a topo showing where the fair means route is compared to this? Is Bridwells route the one everyone climbed that got chopped? Is the compressor still up there?

Think Jim told me the compressor is gone...I can’t remember the exact details of it’s demise, but, think it’s gone.

The filmmaker was Ted Distel. He did the filming, the animations and the editing.

Check out some of his other videos, including interviews with Libby Sauter, Reinhold Messner, John Long, Ueli Steck, John Roskelley and others.
