Exactly Jason (It is Jason right?)! Glad you're pickin up what I'm laying down here.

I downloaded the app after learning of it from my younger brother. He relies on GPS extensively due to the nature of his work (pigs and pipelines). Somewhere along the way he finds what3words and it has since made his world much easier.

I can see it's potential for remote adventures and syncing with friends.

I hope you're doing well good sir!

be safe,

Jason: Yup! That would be me. That was a great day! Although you didn't know it, i was glad to follow your team's blaze.

A follow up to that days end....

We enjoyed the summit a while longer after your team was long gone. Eventually, my son and i rapped off and were back to camp about 2 hours later? Just as the sun was setting. The plan was to camp that night and bust out early and drive to the Hole. My son must have been beaming on adrenaline as it was his suggestion we instead break camp and head back to the parking lot. Admittedly, i was a little surprised by his suggestion as we had not slept much the night before. You see, we were both a bit nervous about his 1st multipitch climb. i was also excited about a 14 year old dream finally coming to fruition! The 5 am start, as always, came too early.

back at camp after the climb I was feeling pretty good too. So was in on the idea of power hiking back to the RV. Before we took off i made him promise we would hike all the way. Full commitment! So goes pole-less tent (poles unknowingly fell off my son's pack somewhere during the hike in) and bags into the pack and we were off! Unfortunately, it immediately became a navigation nightmare in the dark through the willows and over the small streams. Not to mention all the boulder hopping while trying to find the trail proper. Once on trail we picked up speed. However, after about 5 or 6 miles, it turned into a death march for both of us. The catecholamine had long worn off and he was begging to stop and camp. i reminded him of his promise, that the lot wasn't much further, and the terrain was easy peasy from here on. i would regret that. The type one / two fun line had started to blur. By the time we made it back to said lot we were thoroughly cooked! it was 2 am and the feet were fuggin beat! we celebrated with a can of coca cola. which after the 1st sip caused me to puke my guts out for the next 5 mins. i deserved it! Needless to say we slept in that morning. He later admitted that he was glad we pushed it to the RV for sleep.

I love that kid. He is such a soldier! I imagine he learned a lot about himself on such a short stint in the hills. He's since been back to the Winds on his own accord. That puts a big smile on my face.

Here's a link to a TED talk on this tool:

The fact that it works offline is a big plus.

I could see guide books utilizing it too. No more long obscure approach descriptions. It would/could really dumb it down even more for jackwagons like myself.

One could easily keep track of all their dead bodies buried in the desert too!

What’s the point? Just something for the math challenged that can’t do coordinates?

I’m not big on videos. I like to read facts. And being a pilot and sailor I find coordinates
answer much better. Besides, I highly doubt anybody is gonna make a flight director
that can be programmed with ‘where.my.ass’.

Reilly,

I hate to break it to you, but it is in fact broken.

Try delivering a pie to Pedro.

HaHaHa! Touché! I’m sure Pedro is functionally illiterate, at least geographically.

How does it work to find Björn, assuming he’s not standing by the road?

Astride eh? Not according to my map. Which puts you in Iran collaborating with the ayatollah!

Even if Leviathan is willing to eat them, Ahab isn't delivering pizzas! Especially since his shlong was probably bitten off along with his leg! Therefore, his preferred position is arbitrary.

Fer crying out loud Reilly, watch the video. Try playing with the app. Noone ever claimed it was a silver bullet to your whale bone leg.

Reilly,

"What 3 Words" is to GPS coords as Domain Name Service is to IP Address.

Here's an example in case you are not familiar with DNS:

When you want to browse the supertopo forum, you could navigate to:
http://66.39.28.147

But most people (aside from Network Engineers) do not remember tons of IP addresses. It is easier to remember a human friendly(ish) naming convention like http://www.supertopo.com. That got dumbed down even more with the advent of google and a search bar to just type "Supertopo" and rely on more smart stuff in the background to figure out what you wanted.

But back to the pre-google search days.... There is a translation service (DNS - Domain Name Service) that maps between the IP address space and the human-friendly(ish) name space.

Applying this from Internet addresses to GPS coordinates is a brilliant idea, simple in hindsight, to make it easier to precisely refer to a location.

Well, brilliant if dumbing down is brilliant. What’s so hard about lat/longs?
They were doing it longhand 300 years ago.

ive dabbled using w3w and like it a lot. when using voice comms its waaaay faster for such precision compared to a 12 or 14 digit coord. its built in auto correct is a big advantage.

lat longs still have their place for sure, they do one thing w3w defines itself by not doing which is similar locations names are near each other. familiarity with a location means you can build an intuitive memory for where a lat long will be, impossible with w3w. w3w is useless for navigation unless transcribed into lat long (not hard but an extra step that requires electronic assistance).

the future is in combining the two.
