Happy Birthday to Scott Cosgrove who would be 55 today. I had the honor of meeting Scott during what he would describe as the “toughest climb” of his life. He worked hard and always put forth a big effort during his rehabilitation recovery from his fall. He loved being a member of our tribe. Peace be with you Scott.

Laura,
Thanks for the reminder.
Just had a great visit to Josh wandering many of the favourite haunts and ended up over by Integrity where we had gathered in Scott's memory after the memorial at Todd's.
Scott's contributions from nigh twenty years ago still stand as some of the hardest routes in the park.
RIP Cozzy

I had three long conversations with Scott during that rehab phase leading up to his untimely death. Each time he sounded much better. At a certain point, for a lot of us old climbers, it's all about the struggle of simply maintaining health, recovering from the inevitable physical blows and challenges of a declining musculoskeletal reality, and just pressing forward with what is. It gets pretty existential.
Thanks for posting up, Laura!
It's heartwarming to hear from someone who helped Scott navigate his path during that final stretch of his life.

I tagged along with Jeff Constine a couple of times to visit Scott in rehab. Between our first and second visit he’d made a mountain of progress. While it was clear that he would be left with some problems from the accident, it never occurred to me that his life was still in danger. When the word came around, I was shocked.
Thanks, Laura, for pointing out his birthday to us. And as you said, Peace be with you Scott.

Was there ever an updated and more specific cause of death? At the time R&I wrote:
Although the cause of his death is unknown at this time, friends and family of Cosgrove believe that he likely died due to complications from past injuries.
This is pretty vague. People of that age die of sudden heart attacks all the time, so I'm curious what "complications from past injuries" (if any) had anything to do with it.
RIP young man!

I'm probably going to get this wrong on many fronts, but I'll give it a shot anyhow, without reading up on it.
Scott had a boatload of surgeries. Lots of times due to the mobilization of blood in different kinds of surgeries combined with the sedentary aspect of recovery, they have you on blood thinners to prevent deep vein thrombosis, or DVT. When I had my hips done, because a whole bunch of blood gets mobilized, they have blood standing by, and postsurgical protocol includes blood thinners and compression socks in the lower leg to prevent DVT. IIRC, DVT creates and releases blood clots.
Even people with injuries to their legs, like from a strong blow, can throw a clot. From that you can have a heart attack or a brain aneurysm. We think this is what happened to Doug Nidever after an injury to his leg from a fall ice climbing. People respond differently. I know a guy who had an injury to his lower leg and needs to be on blood thinners for the rest of his life. So Scott may have thrown a clot as an expression of a downstream risk factor from all the corrective surgeries.

Roy,
Thank you for articulating the most likely explanation for Cozzy’s untimely passing.
As far as I’m concerned, the fall he initially survived eventually killed him.
Respect.

Think of him so often.
Not a climber myself, but check this forum regularly just to know others still carry him in their hearts - it helps. Thank you!

In case it's not obvious, Jeff's picture posted above of Scott on TR at Tick Rock is after his accident. Jeff did a lot to help out his friend after the fall.
