Major League Baseball

Pitchers and catchers report around Feb. 12th...

Once again, my early predictions, hopes, and dreams:

Cubs - Boston World Series

Dodgers win the West again

Nats will stink again

Yanks will be there all year

Angels will still stink and Trout will finally want traded

Oakland will be at the bottom

Bartolo Colon will not retire and have a .500 season

Ichiro will be back on the field

Orioles will get beaten like a drum and lose 120 games

If it is Boston and LA in the World Series I’m going to the game but will start a go fund me for beer and food. Ed and the Skulpin will be going with me, so maybe an early go fund me to make it all happen.

Realmuto will go to the Dodgers

Harper will go to the Dodgers

That chump Machado will go to the Yanks on a short term deal, not the 10 years he is looking for.

Kershaw is done and will only have a few innings this year due to injury

If Harper does not go to the Dodgers, he will be a Cub. Dodgers will use the $$$ for some A list pitching.

Josh Donaldson will have a big year

Seattle will really really stink

Phillies and Atlanta will struggle mightily and not make the playoffs

As usual I’m open to some wagers...

The Dodgers passed the point in the curve of their optimal potential to win it all...even if they’d somehow managed to make it happen in ‘17 or ‘18, it would have been more about happenstance than actual cohesive skill as a team. Boston last year was a far better example of a skilled and honed team.

Since the D’s are likely to be in a period of re-structure, I’d be surprised if they became contenders.

Yankees signed Tulowitzki to a one-year deal.

It's possible I have played more major league games this decade than Tulo.

Tulo at league minimum is good to have around. He could play 3 or 4 games at short, a couple at 3rd and keep the dugout cleaned up. Probably wont get hurt pushing a broom so you might have him for the whole season, a first!

Maybe the Mariners should sign Edgar Martinez again as long as they’re going for Ichiro. Futility seems to be the theme of the Seattle organization. Anyway, Edgar deserved a place in the HOF. He played on the best teams the Mariners ever had, but nevertheless always came up a bit short (the team that is). As far as the DH in the HOF goes, I believe Paul Moitor spent a fair amount of his career as a DH and you know David Ortiz will be there in the not too distant future.

See the young man in this picture? He was 18 years old when it was taken at the train station in Mobile, Alabama, in 1952. There is $1.50 in his pocket. In that bag by his foot are two changes of clothes. (And if his mama was anything like most other mamas in the South, probably some sandwiches and other snacks.) He was on his way to Indiana to take a job.

He was going to play baseball for the Indy Clowns of the Negro Leagues. Apparently, he was pretty good at it. A couple of years later, he was signed by the Milwaukee Brewers. He played for the Brewers for 2 seasons, then moved across town to the Braves, and later followed them to Atlanta. Eventually, he was the last Negro League player to be on a major league roster.

He still hangs around the baseball world. At the moment, he's the senior vice president of the Atlanta Braves. Even though the team has changed stadiums (twice) since then, his retired number, 44, still hangs on the outfield wall of the old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium near where he belted a homer to break Babe Ruth's all-time record (which he held for 33 years).

Happy 85th birthday to "Hammerin' Hank" Aaron

From the 2 Degrees of Separation Dept:
Stanley Burrell, aka MC Hammer:
“In the Oakland Coliseum parking lot the young Burrell would sell stray baseballs and dance accompanied by a beatboxer. Oakland A's team owner Charles O. Finley saw the 11-year-old doing splits and hired him as a clubhouse assistant and batboy as a result of his energy and flair.[1][15] Burrell served as a "batboy" with the team from 1973 to 1980.” - Wiki

Charlie O was a good friend of me mum. Don’t think she ever met MC Hammer though.

Hey trivia buffs, Hank Aaron didn’t start with the Brewers as they didn’t exist until 1970. Tough call, but there's never been another outfielder like Speaker. He had 139 double plays in his career. 2nd place has 86. Speaker had six unassisted DPs in his career. His .345 BA is sixth all-time. He has the record for career doubles. 3514 hits. His glove was where "triples go to die." The Red Sox recent visit to Oakland proves that although they are defending champs, they are slow learners... Athletics CF Ramon Laureano and his thunderbolt of a right arm hosed down THREE Red Sox baserunners in one series, including Mookie Betts at third base in the last game of the series with nobody out in the 9th inning of a game the Sox were behind by 4 runs. That's just plain dumb.

The Mookie failed to absorb the hard lesson of his teammate Xander Bogaerts.

Laureano had thrown out Bogaerts at third base in the ninth inning of the second game of the four gamer. (A perfect one-hopper into Matt Chapman's glove.) At least the circumstances we're quite so horrible, one out in the 9th with the Rox facing a 1-0 deficit.

But still. Bogaerts himself should have known better, because Laureano had chopped him down at the plate in the second inning of the opener with a 270-foot perfecto.

Which I would say is the best throw I've seen Laureano make except that it isn't—the 300-odd footer from the left centerfield fence back to first base to complete a double play he made last year holds that distinction.

Robbie Grossman gunned out another Sox baserunner trying to get a legs double.

Four critical outs on the base paths in one series. I can't remember another set in which outfield assists decisively affected the outcome of so many games.

Crouch, Bo Jackson made heck of a throw to gun a guy at home back a bit ago. Harold had already touched third, rounding hard for home, Bo picks the ball up in the left field corner and guns a strike to the catcher. Clemente was another you’d be crazy to test.

naw, they just don't play well in the Coliseum and especially night games there... but they have had a very slow start, opening on the road (and still on the road until next Tuesday) hasn't been good for them. The A's fielders had to be perfect on those throws, and they were... good on them.

I did see the Tuesday game, and they had opportunities in the last four innings to get the runner on third to score in a 1 run game... they didn't.

Still hoping that there is an A's BoSox playoff series in the future...

That Bo Jackson throw was pretty great, no doubt.

Here's Laureano's from last year. Make sure you watch long enough to see the view from the left centerfield camera. (starting at 24 seconds)

So good to have the games back.

Bogaerts himself should have known better...

that play was reviewed (a long review) and not enough evidence to overturn the call on the field...

Ed, safe or out by hairsbreadth replay review doesn't change the fact of the throw, so yes, he should have known better. The call at third wasn't controversial.

"...doesn't change the fact of the throw..." absolutely an excellent throw safe or out

Uh, rong, Twinkies are 23-12, Los Dodgers are 25-12,
Twinkies are in an even weaker division.

Twins: 23-12 (.657 winning percentage)
Dodgers: 25-14 (.641 winning percentage)

.657 > .641

right? no? yes? hard to tell. So hard. We should argue whether .657 > .641. Maybe hold a vote.

Albert Pujols gets 2000 RBIs and it barely makes a blip in the news.

I just witnessed a macho, manly man (well, Kole Calhoun) bunt to get a hit against a ridiculously lopsided shift. This is the first time I have ever seen a hitter with decent power play the shift instead of (usually) hitting into the shift.

It's about time. I have no quarrel with the shift at all. But for the past couple years while "the shift" has been in vogue, it has been infuriating to see sluggers (real or self-imagined) not adapt. This is a turn for the better, and I hope this continues. Good for you, Kole Calhoun.
