just goes to show that there is no such thing as military intelligence.

It sounds to me like he didn't want to come back. Why else would he wander out into a blizzard on a mountain with no protective clothing? I wonder how things were going for him at the Academy prep school.

Dad should have taught common sense to his boy.

Or it's mental illness. Sad case in all directions.

Deserter?

A student at the prep academy? Only the armed forces, both active duty and active reserve service members who abandon their posts for more than 72 hours are considered "deserters". This was a student, who was not sworn under oath to serve in the active armed forces. He was not an officer candidate in the Air Force Academy either. Simply a prep school student.

UCMJ applies to AF prep

https://www.academyadmissions.com/about-the-academy/faq/prep-school-faq/#

But anyone who enters as a civilian can quit so I doubt they hold them strictly to the UCMJ

I think you're putting to much emphasis on the word 'deserter'. I think it's just a suggestion that he ran from something he didn't like about the school or where his life was going, and since it was military the term 'deserter' was used instead of dropout.

Gumby, you can’t be court martialed for running away from yer prep school.
If he did run away, I think given the resources brought to bear to find him the AF might find a way to bring some charges against him.

Academy Prep students are on active reserve status.

Desertion had a requisite mental state. The intent to not return. He is AWOL, less serious.

As Mooch and I have pointed out y’all are completely at sea on this not to mention it is completely irrelevant if not meaningless.

Yep unfortunate for both of them to have most likely perished up there and very unlikely anyone will see anything again until June sometime when the melt off happens and the masses return to the area.

Both missing parties will likely be found eventually, unless they really wandered off to someplace bizarre.

Dunno bout that, I don’t see them fitting into Nederland.
