I went to Georgia and Armenia three years ago. I rock climbed in Armenia and soloed a really fun moderate ice route on 5,000 meter Kazbek that went up immediately behind the large stone refugio to the summit.
Georgia is a beautiful country with friendly people and really fabulous food and wine.

The earliest archeological evidence of wine grapes have been found in sites in Georgia dating back to 6,000 BC...and they have been going at it ever since.

One must be rather circumspect there at least as far as various beverages are concerned.
The native brandy is eminently fit for pyrotechnics yet the champagne is surprisingly benign.

Its very cheap to get here, especially from western europe. In Chiatura marijuana has been legalized so you can smoke it to get high at home or outside, wherever you want...

Melvud...the reality is that most climbers in the US, if they travel for sports climbing, will go to France, Italy, Spain, Thailand or Greece. Georgia is a wonderful country which should be sold on it’s numerous assets in addition to sports climbing....physical beauty, wonderful wine and food and the Caucasus Mountains to name a few.

I am writing this from a terminal at the Dallas airport where I am waiting to board a plane for New Zealand. NZ has sport climbing too but I am going there mainly for it’s other qualities and I will surely do more pack rafting than sport climbing.

Post some pictures of Tiblisi, the Caucasus and, don’t forget, the beautiful women. I loved Georgia and it’s on my short list for a return visit.

One rest day while in the Baksan Valley on a climb of Elbruz, I went on a long hike over a pass into Georgia. The mountains were spectacular, and the people met along the trail were friendly. The brandy was cheap, and very strong.

Someday I would love to go back and explore the country, perhaps sample the climbing
