Hmmm. I have a very different experience than many of the nay sayers. I have an I phone 5. I don't remember when I bought it. Its quite old. It works great! My wife updates her phone occasionally and tells me to get a new one. I say why? It works fine.
I like how I can text off my laptop because I my fingers are fat. It took my a bit to move from a PC. I find them more intuitive. But I have no regrets.

I was at a family gathering this weekend and one of my wife's cousins who works in design for apple was there. When I told him I would never buy any apple product he was shocked, then he continued to tell me how great they were.

gee if Apple products are SO horseshit then they have millions of people fooled into buying them
impossible that you are wrong of course, must be everyone else wrong
it's fun to bash success as if any one of us could have created and grown a company like apple
After many crappy build frozen up virus attacked PC products through the 90s I bought my first Apple product in 2004
Iphone 5,7, and now 8 plus, wife and I both have Mac Air laptops
support is fantastic, live or chat and Apple has stood behind their warranty with me even when the original ran out
ok back to the belly aching and whining

I'm in the not very thrilled with the options camp.
I went with iphone BITD because I thought it would be less likely to get a virus and less fiddly. It would either be easy to do or not allowed.
Android can do anything if you want to fiddle long enough.
The one thing that is super fiddly is iTunes. I refuse to deal with that. That is the main reason I went with a Samsung tablet. I'm not dealing with iTunes for movies on trips. For my phone I have google play.
I also don't want to be 100 percent trapped in either ecosystem.
I use my phone very little and don't need many features but I want the biggest possible screen for my old eyesight and clumsy fingers. But there aren't many options for big screens without all the fancy extras.
Still on a 6 plus. Might get the current model in a couple of years.
