I doubt I will buy another iPhone. My $1000 iPad is less than a year old and it is already
acting up. Screw that update crap - it’ll just slow it down more.

I’m typing this on my six year old ipad and my iphone 5 is working fine as well. I don’t allow updates.

why are apple customers so stupidly loyal???? When I switched to digital photography everyone told me I needed Apple for photos. My first 2 computers cost well over 2k each and actually kind of sucked for photos because I photo would save multiple copies of each file and used too much space and basicly sucked.. Anyways after the 2nd g4 powerbook crapped out I switched topc for a fraction of the cost and much better platform for photos. PC File system is easier and photoshop is the same anyways.. My Samsung galaxy phone cost $100 bucks...

I love apple - havent used a PC in well over a decade.

This year I bought a chromebook for the wife, and two Xaomi Android phones from China for us - dual sim, dual app, top of the line sony camera...light years ahead of Apple and hundreds and hundreds cheaper. I am loving everything about our purchases!

I am now considering what to do about the laptop...could be a big change coming...

They already sabotaged it by making the battery non replaceable. Apple does all it can to be proprietary and force you to pay them extra for your device to simply function the way it should. Smart business model.

I have hated apple since anything after the original Macs

$1000 for a smart phone that is barely 10% performance better than an unlocked slightly older phone you can pick up used for $200 to $300...insanity. Talk about far past the top of the diminishing return curve.

I'm still on a Note4 and occasionally switch to a waterproof Kyocera. Both under $150 on e-bay

Samsung Trac-fones...

I haven't spent more than ~$100/year for a phone.... ever. No contracts and they run normal modern Android apps.

Part of the price of living in the first world.

Reminds me of the old Beatles' warning that money can't buy you love or a really satisfactory camera phone.

We'll be checking out the upcoming Google Pixel 3.

I think Google loves me...66% sure of it, anyway. :0)

buy a camera if you want a camera. Buying a phone for photography is like buying a swiss army knife for carpentry. Better than nothing for simple jobs.

Except Apple has a better grasp on "you can get better but you can't pay more" cult marketing. Apple is contemptuous of their customers because they know their customers are dupes.

Dan,

agreed! I think a lot of the appeal of Apple products is that people think it makes them cool!

If you’ve got plans for a better mousetrap, go for it! If our plans are for someone else to have better plans for a mousetrap, we might just find ourselves stuck in the same old one.

If you don’t feel good about your phone, you’re buying it for the wrong reasons. If you hate Apple, buy a different phone that you will help you feel good about hating Apple.

Ya can’t change them you can only change you. Who knows, with the right marketing you might become POTUS.

My iPhone 6 makes me so cool! Not quite as cool as everyone else in my family, but that’s on me.

Why Does Apple Have So Much Contempt for Their Consumers ?

Because that's how corporate America rolls.

I’ve used PCs and Macs, iPhones and Androids for years. If you think Apple’s pros are only about image (a common refrain) you don’t really understand the pros and cons of the different platforms.

The latest iOS actually improves performance on older devices. This was way overdue. It’s super lame that Apple won’t let you choose an older OS if you want.

Or you could just buy certain other phones with spy backdoors built in,
or use other products that track, scan, and sell every breath you take.
Don't forget that all OS's have a limited number of years of support.

Apple has a well curated line-up, and you pay for that (as well as a "fashion" tax). You might not like the choices they make (I often don't) but you rarely get non-functional junk.

Android is a seething snake pit with hidden gems, if you don't get bitten in the process. More often than not you get unsupported phones loaded with pre-installed bloatware/spyware/etc unless you move up to the near-Apple priced phones. A couple phones we got years back received zero security updates after buying them, but the non-removable bloatware updated itself to the point where no storage was left and the phones became unusable/worthless.

So my wife got the iphone she really wanted, and has been happy. I went the Motorola route for the last two phones and I am cautiously happy. I mostly use the thing to get texted grocery lists and find my way with maps. I ended up buying much more phone than I need just to get something that is from a reputable outfit (for now) that puts minimal crap on the phone (yet frustratingly not zero).

Android similarly messes up stuff with updates. Their Google Fit app was handy for keeping track of running, biking, hiking, etc. They turned it into a game with "Heart Points", rendering it mostly worthless to me. You really don't "own" the phone in your pocket anymore.

Because like just about every major tech company they are all about controlling and brow beating people and keeping them on a short leash. This is one of the dark sides of modern techno-arrogance which companies like Apple and Google foster in their in-house cultures.

And one very important thing they know which perhaps 99% of their "customer" base has no idea : the use of their products are profoundly injurious to human health.
