Adios, Ghost. Congratulations on your retirement. Nice place to get away from 'all that.' Whatever that is. I plan to relocate upon retirement in a few years. Heartily support that move.
See you on the internet!

Thanks to all for the good wishes and kind words.
And, yes, the internet is available in Canada, so leaving the US doesn't mean leaving Supertopo.

what is the novel???
It's an excellent and compelling read with climbing as the subtext. It is one of those novels that manages to walk the line between not too much indecipherable jargon that a non-climber would be confused by, and letting the climbing reader know that it's written by an actual climber. Not a thing that's successfully pulled off that often.
I believe it was up for the Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature, at one point.
Sorry for the crappy screen grab:

In the late 50's Powell River's pipe band, MacMillan Bloedel Limited put out a very fine album. Grade 1! Look them up.

Bye Seattle, it was nice to know you. It was a nice run.
Speaking of runs, I'll come up when the Steelhead run. Powell River looks like fishing Heaven. See you soon I hope.

There will be a pop quiz at the border, you must name one Canadian supreme court justice
Just flash a pic of this guy in the Santa suit.
Nice duds, but it would never work here. We don’t do right honorable any more.

Canadian supreme court justices wear Santa suits? Can they find out who's naughty or nice? I love it!

Ghost, after you get settled, you might want to look into buying a motorhome and joining the vast number of other Canadian snowbirds who come to the SW USA for the winter. Lots of great climbing down here too!

As I think of it, you could just flash a pic of Santa. Do it quick enough and nobody will be the wiser.

An airplane and a climber. Is it like The White Tower?
Welcome back to Canada, Dave.
I was remorseful when we left Seattle for Toronto but things worked out ok. I hope to hear more from you through internet or otherwise. Salt Spring Island is crazy good and you should come visit. Remember to get a through-fare on the ferry, and the senior discount if you are traveling M-T-W-Th.

Check with BC Ferries but tell them you are from Byzantium and they will take you as one of their own.

A couple of very full days have now drawn to a close, and I can post a brief update.
First, and most important, are the wildlife sightings. All the bumpf about how great the sea kayaking in this area is includes lots of blather and photos of whales. Well, yeah, on the ferry as we approached, we were treated to a bunch of whales surfacing and blowing whatever it is they blow up into the sunset sky.
And, that night, driving down from our new place toward a Japanese restaurant, we passed through a herd of deer.
But the wildest of all wildlife sightings was this morning. We don't have anything to eat or drink in the house yet, so we drove down to the far end of town to an espresso bar/yuppie food market to get coffee and breakfast. With breakfast over, I...
...okay, back up for a minute here. While we know a fair bit about our new hometown, we don't actually know any people here. Except one. Most of you probably remember Bruce Kay. Posted a lot on ST, and then overdosed on the politard crap and left. We don't know him well, but, based on our ST acquaintance, he joined us for a day of climbing when he passed through Seattle about four years ago. And I'd heard that he'd since moved to Powell River...
...okay, so I finished my coffee and breakfast burrito and wandered into the adjoining yuppie food mart. Pretty empty at that time of the morning, but when I rounded the end of one of the aisles, there was this old guy, shopping. WAIT. IT'S NOT JUST SOME OLD GUY, IT'S BRUCE!!!!!
Serendipity to the max. Turned out we were both fully occupied for today, but an evening in the Townsite Brewery is on tap for tomorrow.
So far, so good.
