After being left for dead by a hit and run driver 43 years ago on my ten speed bicycle and living with the results of a broken back and a damaged face I recently decided to pick up the pieces of my life and rebuild it. So I made the decision to get surgery on the side of my face most impacted, especially around the eye and temple.
I've been holding on to so many things from the wreck and now I am free and I can let it go and transcend and continue on with the process of my new life and living.

Dave, Your strength of character, clarity of purpose and, need I say, purity of mind, have done you well... Your focus will guide; the eyes in the forest are your friends.

As my physical therapist used to always tell me about where I was in my process of “recovery”, you’re 100% of where you’re at today.
That’s not a bad place to start. Best wishes moving forward.

Sharing a Lakota healing prayer. Give yourself whatever gifts of time and rest you need to heal.
Our Father, the Sky, hear us and make us strong.
Our Mother, the Earth, hear us and give support.
Spirit of the East, send us your Wisdom.
Spirit of the South, may we tread your path of life.
Spirit of the West, may we always be ready for the long journey.
Spirit of the North, purify us with your cleansing winds.

Dave, your spirit far outshines any of your physical elements.
Great to see you, and resolutions of past angst always brings growth.
Funny I never even noticed.

A brave and wise choice, Dave, the benefit of which spreads out away from you as you chose to share this with us. My humble thanks for your sharing, and my support across the miles as you journey forward.

You won't be sorry you did this. Your only regret will be that you didn't do it sooner. And you'll get good drugs. Controlling the pain and not being too stoical about it, will really speed the healing.

I first met Dave shortly after his accident. I was leaving camp 4 in the morning, headed for what they called coffee in the cafeteria, when I heard a voice calling me to help. I walked over to a figure laying in the dirt, and it was Dave, who needed help putting his exo-skeleton on.
I help him up, buckled his armor on, and we have been friends since. I've never really noticed the scars, although they are obvious if you look for them. I just saw the guy inside who was sleeping in the dirt in camp 4 days after being released from the hospital.

Scars...? i never judged Dave by them..I always associated Dave Yerian with his sense of humor and an uncanny knack for pedaling a bike...

Dave, thanks for posting up and I hope somehow posting here is a beneficial part of your journey toward healing. Walked by the BY the other day and felt the vibe of the route weighing down upon us in the sunlight. What a magical place. May your journey continue with the support of friends and strangers and the promise that every day is a new one.
Scott
P.S. Keep those wounds covered up or at least covered in Vaseline or abx ointment as the surgeon recommended. I'm a surgeon....we live by the mantra "moist healing is good healing." You MUST keep it lubed up for at least a month. Don't think "oh I'll let it dry out a bit..it'll be good for it." Just the opposite. That's my recommendation but listen to your surgical team and do what they say!

Just a word for restorative surgery. Form, not function is often considered when plastic surgery is mentioned. Also, without healthy eyelid function, there can be suffering and even blindness. IMHO it is human nature to recoil when we see suffering in others. It is sometimes too rare to see it as possibly our own.
Heal well!!!

one day maybe 6 or 7 years back I was talking to Kauk up in the Meadows. Ron said he had seen you and I said "how's Dave?".
Ron said "yesterday he biked to Lee Vining and back in the morning, then we went bouldering"
I figured you were doing well.
best wishes, Mike

Dave,
I have nothing to add. I keep coming back to your thread and continue to wonder about this statement you made in your opening post:
I've been holding on to so many things from the wreck and now I am free and I can let it go . . . .
What would you say enabled you to let go?
